2012 -- 1000-Mile Month Challenge
Note: I know this won't fit into everyone's training plans, or life plans, and I know this will not interest everyone, so there is absolutely no pressure to participate in this challenge. If you don't want to participate in this one, that's OK. But it is do-able (I've done it many times) and may encourage some of us to get out there and ride more.
The challenge: Ride 1000 miles in at least one month this year ... or as many months as you want ... go for all 12 months if you have the time and energy!!
I know lots of you ride this amount and more during your "season", so let us know how it's going.
If you don't quite make 1000 miles in a month, check out the 1000-Kilometer Month Challenge:

I'm in.
I never had thought about doing this before, but when I started doing randonneuring big time, I was getting in my daily 20-30 miles a day, plus doing long weekend rides, and that's what boosted it right up. I noticed another rider who just posted on the 2011 thread seems to have just been very consistent on long daily rides, and that'll work too, but doesn't fit my schedule as well.

Over in the Clydes forum I committed to 500 a month but I think that's going to be attained with a fair bit of mileage to spare. So, I'll stick my nose in here, see if January goes as expected and probably commit fully in Feb.
Anyone have a straight jacket?
-------
January - fell way, way short.
February - shooting for it.

Well, hit both the big 1000 miles and the even bigger 1100 miles yesterday on a 117 mile ride. I guess I have the 1000 miles in for January this year. It was the second in as many 100 milers that I have started out with temps below zero F only to see them warm up into the lower 20s. Boy I never thought I would see myself doing any kind of serious riding when the temps were below zero but ever of the three days that I've had the opportunity over the past 8 days I have ridden at least 50 miles. The coldest day thus far this winter was the 50 miler with the next morning even colder and I managed 104 miles.
Now to go and play in the freezing rain. Hold did I say that. It was freezing rain when I rode into the libraray this morning and I hear it is icing up outside even though the temps were suppose to be rising this afternoon.
I may have to try a double metric before the end of the month the forecast looks much more favorable the rest of the month for actually being able to put in some decent speed on rides. Heck 45 for a high tomorrow. Gotta build some mileage to keep the 60 day pace at over 50 miles a day and to see if I can get my 6th consecutive month of over 1500 miles for the month.

I'll be the first to post January mileage. When I get home, in another 5+ miles, I'll have 1566.2 miles for the month of January.
I still think February and March are going to be interesting months weather wise. I think tame everyone else has been trying to make it sound like they are going to cold and snowy while the current 15 day forecast is saying warm and dry. Go figure. I'm front loading the month with mileage the next 5-7 days. Planning the double metric for February on Groundhog Day and again on Sunday with at least 50 each day in between. I don't trust the weather at all. With 6 consecutive months of 1500 miles I want 12 consecutive months. Heck with it. I don't want 18,000 in 12 months...I want 1500 per month for 12 months. I had one day off in January and hit 1500 on the 29th so using the same strategy I should be able to do it in February even though it is missing a few days.

Got in 1,105 miles or so for January. February may be a challenge, should be easier after that.

If you are interested, we have a free 101 mile training ride every month in SoCal (San Clemente). We ride these as a group and have between 50-150 riders depending on the weather. supported stops and lunch at the finish. Our next training ride is Feb. 11. Rad Fondo events kick ass! Trust me.
There are pictures, routes, details at the link below. you can email me radfondo@cox.net for more info.

My Dad, who is 71 years old, is not on the forums, not really interested in being computer literate. But he started January off with 1150 miles. He is aiming to do 1000 miles every month. I will update his totals here. He lives in Virginia Beach. I live in MN, too cold for me to aim for 1000 miles in a month yet, 519 for this Jan.

I don't think I have any of him on his bicycle, but I will see him this summer, and will get one then. We are planning a ride up to Duluth, MN from my place, spending two nights there, with a day of riding along the north shore. Should be about 300 miles in 3 days. I know he will be ready for it, I just have to get ready.
