we had a local ultra runner who believed in this same thing. He started an event with what he thought was a minor cold. when he crossed the finish line he collapsed and died. Post mortem it was determined that he had pneumonia.

About post-ride illnesses. If I get significantly hypothermic on a ride I reliably run a fever and have flu-like symptoms for up to a week afterwards. It generally requires pretty extreme conditions - like ice storms at the top of mountain passes or mid-winter/minus 5 degrees. It has nothing to do with being host to a 'bug'. It's how my body responds to that kind of stress.
