Garmin eTrex 30 questions/recommendations

Hi

Are there any eTrex 30 users on the forum? Would love to hear some best practices for mapping rides, tracking data, etc? I finally gave up on my Timex Ironman Global Trainer and bought an eTrex30 as a replacement.

The thing is, it is not designed per se as a cycling computer even though it has ANT+ support as well as a whole bunch of other features. Downloaded maps from OSM for my region yesterday and it works well enough but any recommendations, best practices for capturing data and then uploading to strava/mapmyride etc would be appreciated.

There are plenty of eTrex HXc users here - which is basically the same machine.

I use the eTrex 20 (same as the 30, without ANT+).

I'm not sure exactly what you're looking to do with it..? My limited experience:
1). Clear the current track before the ride, and after the ride, upload the current track into Strava fir analysis.
2). Upload the .gpx route file before a brevet, and have it give me turn-by-turn directions.

Note - for (2) above you're best off using Garmin's MapSource, which is a separate purchase.

Here is a follow on question. I rode to work this morning and recorded a track.
Then, I rode back from work and recorded a track. Before recording the second track, I saved the first track via the track manager and then reset my track.

When I got home, I tried to upload my data via Basecamp and it only transferred the second track. I could see the first track on the device, but I could not get it to my desktop.

I wonder why this device does not have a "start recording" and "stop recording" functionality like most other GPSs.

I was able to get the morning ride out of the GPS but it had a duration of 12 hrs.

Any thoughts.

Thanks
