MTB drivetrain for Cervélo R3 ?
Hi,
I am planning to use a Cervélo R3 with a Burley Nomad trailer for a 20,000 km tour around North America. My R3 is already set up for long distances but I will need an MTB drivetrain (something like a triple 42/32/24 & a 10sp 11-36 cassette) and would prefer to use STI brake/shifters so I can keep my aerobars.
What do you suggest?
I currently have 2 Compact 10sp setups for the R3:
1. DI2 FD, RD, Rotor Meter + Qrings
2. 105 FD, RD, FSA crank
If I can save by reusing any of these components in the new setup, it would be great.
Thanks in advance,

You'll be better off posting this in the "touring" forum. If you use that MTB crankset, an 11-34 cassette should be enough, IMO. Can you post more info (specs) on the 105 components you currently have to determine if they will work?

Thanks Chris. Will post in touring.
The 105 components are 2011 and include shifters, FD on compact 50/34 FSA BBright 172.5 crank, RD on 11-28 10sp cassette.

"Officially" Shimano says you can not use a mountain derailleur with their 10spd road shifters. Unofficially the tech guy at Shimano told me some shops have managed to use a non shadow (not sure how this changes things) 9spd mtn rear derailleur with 10 spd shifters and cassette.
At the handmade bike show I saw someone hack a di2 derailleur to take a mountain cage and work with a mountain derailleur so if you search long enough online they may have posted something about it. I do forget who did it though.

I have used a 9 speed ultegra sti shifter, ca 2002, with a XT rear derailleur for years on my touring bike with no problems.
For various reasons just changed to a new 105 10 speed shifter, with the same XT rear derailleur, and a SRAM 12-32 cassette. Absolutely no problems with the shifting. Would be hard pressed to tell difference from my 10 speed all ultegra drivetrain.

Others have installed the longer arm of an Ultegra triple derailleur to increase the max cog size to 32: https://www.bikerumor.com/2012/10/17/...ar-derailleur/
