Neighborhood kid buys bike, we go out for a 40 miler...

I was just going to take him up to Cheshire and back-- 20 miles up the local rail trail. Show him some road riding techniques and talk gear. Get him started right.

I had two cliff bars, one water bottle, and eleven dollar bills. No phone, patch kit, or debit card. I didn't even eat much and wasn't at all properly hydrated.

Kid had on basketball shorts and a white cotton tank top undershirt. I really thought he was going out in his basketball shoes until he put on some clipless road shoes that he picked up with his new c-dale synapse.

Kid's yard is full of dirt bikes and cars in various states of repair. Dad's a scrapper. Not the kid you'd expect to show up with a brand new Cannondale Synapse.

How far did we go? 121 miles all the way to the Massachusetts border and back to New Haven. Kid kept saying "it's my dream to go to another state and back!" I hadn't even worn my helmet.

I've been back at school working towards my doctorate and really haven't been commuting to work on the bike or getting out for shop rides or really even anything solo at all for about a year.

Crazy kids.

Wow! Sounds like a fun ride! 121 miles and no training beforehand. Very impressive.

He didn't know he was supposed to be tired, complain about food, cadence, gearing or water or whine about his backside. Looks like you have a new road partner
