2014 - Long Distance Cycling Goals
Got any long distance cycling goals for 2014?
Maybe something in the Randonneuring world? A 24-hour race? The Century-A-Month? The RAAM?
To refresh your memory ... these were the 2013 goals:

Big goal for 2014 will be the Hoodoo 500 on the fixie, just because there's a fixed-gear category, and there doesn't appear to be any record. I had noticed that the fixed gear category had disappeared from their web site around September, and when I sent an email query, they replied that riding the event on fixed gear was not recommended. But now I see it's back in. I am a firm believer in using the wrong bike for the event (none of this "having a stable of bikes for every purpose" for me! It's one track bike with brakes and a few component changes. So a track bike (with brakes) is perfect for hilly ultras!
I also am planning on doing the Cino Heroica; I've actually found a set of slotted cleats that bolt to shoes with the Look 3-hole pattern, so I can use my old retro pedals in addition to the steel fixie. Not really ultra distances, but it's mostly gravel ("strada bianca"), so a fixie with 23mm tires should be appropriate. I had some light snow to practice on during my commutes so far this winter.

Oops, should have posted my goals in this thread rather than the "2014 Randonnees" thread. Oh well.
* My first full SR series. That's pretty much it, apart from my plan to ride more all around.

Tandem goals: a century or two, a 200k or two, one-day STP, and RAMROD if we can get in. Our team lost 20 lbs. this past year. We're going to try to lose another 20 by July 1. We've gone from being utterly dropped by the Suspiciously Fit People to keeping them in sight on the climbs. Another 20 lbs. and I think we can be on their wheel.

Had a ****ty 2013 when it came to reaching goals. The only one I got was riding a century per week. Hoping to reach them all in 2014.
-CA Triple Crown + the Alta Alpina Challenge
-Century per week
-Ride across Nevada in 30 hours
-Ride a century in 3 new states

That's OK, I didn't accomplish any of my goals from last year. 2013 was just not a cycling year for me.
And this, year ...
I'm still trying to decide.
After hardly riding at all in 2013 (only about 2660 km) ... I want to ride more than that, and build up my distances. I feel like I'm starting almost from scratch again.
So ... first, I'd like to do a 100 km ride before the end of January. I did 41.69 km on January 1, so I'm not too far off that goal ... it's possible.
And I've got my eye on a 200K on March 1, but I'll have to find out what the terrain is like, and see whether I'm in shape to do that or not.

My other goal is to get faster, but I'm not setting a number for that -- I'm not sure what's realistic for me, and I'd rather be pleased by every increase, no matter how small, than be disappointed if I set ambitious goals.

I achieved my goals last year:
- ride at least one century every month (I did 19 in 2013)
- ride at least 6000 km (over 9,500)
- more brevets: I rode 5 of them, 200/300 and the first 600, but no 400 yet
My goals for 2014:
- ride at least one century every month
- enter the full SR series and if possible, complete the series
Not a firm goal but a dream:
- ride up Taroko Gorge/TW to Wuling (0-3000+m above sea level)
- ride at least one century every month (I did 19 in 2013)
- ride at least 6000 km (over 9,500)

Nothing really serious. I'm just gonna try to do a full SR-series and maybe a 1000K. Other than that, I'm going to enjoy myself and maybe do a ride across the Scandinavian peninsula just for fun ...

On mileage mine are the same from last year. Do at least 7,000 miles (I finished with 8,001)
This year, not all rando related:
7,000 or more miles
Do at least two randos, 200K or above.
Do at least two multi day tours of more than 2 days
Do a good job as the new RUSA RBA for South TX.
Ride in at least 12 events
Stay healthy

Commute a day a week 50 rt as many possible, or rather my weather tolerance will permit.
Finish 200k brevet in April, don't care if I make controls finish is good enough.
Finish a late season 200k, but then making the controls do matter to me.
Long rides for fun, with SO and w/o...
Ride with Dear Daughter(13) as she wants to ride as a sport after she rehabs her knee... Perhaps she'll do a metric with me?

Very modest this year- the kids are interested in randonneuring so a couple of 200k brevets with them. See how they like it.
Interesting how they split: some are TT'ers and some are better at slower, long distance.

I don't know if this is a pipe-dream or exactly what the logistics. But after logging 4000 miles and losing almost 100 pounds last year, I'm feeling like I want to celebrate with say, a 1000-1500 mile trip to maybe Colorado. I don't have the first clue about supply, where to shelter, eat, charge, low-traffic safer routes, etc. At my peak, I was only doing about 30 miles a day. I don't envision more than 50 a day being a sustainable pace. That makes a month each way feasible.

After doing zero doubles in 2013, I have signed up for the Solvang Double Century. Depending on how it goes, I will try to earn a third CA Triple Crown. If I lose my mind I may try the Devil Mountain Double again. Davis for sure.
I also have a two week Oregon and Washington ride planned.
As always I will bike commute every darn day (well, I might miss one or two...)
Good luck to the rest of you in your goals!

I'm signed up for the Natchez Trace 1500, so that will be the focus. It takes a SR series to qualify, which I'll probably do in KY for the hill training. I created a local perm populaire route and maybe talked a couple friends into joining RUSA for a P-12, so that will take up some weekends.
Vacation days are getting tight, but probably I'll do the National 24 Hour Challenge again.
I have a new bike, so this year I'll be sorting that out for fit.

I can't believe I actually did it in 2012. I was mentally a bit off for days afterward. There are folks who fly through it, (heck, there are lots of riders here who do distances I can't begin to fathom) but just finishing was the highlight of my cycling life.
I was so excited I even designed my own commemorative jersey for it.

I even made my longest blog entry ever about the ride.

Devil's Week (an SR series in a week) this year hosted by the Ottawa chapter of Randonneurs Ontario.
Another SR series done at a more relaxed pace.
One of two 1000km brevets offered by the club.
A double century for my birthday ride.
...done on my fixed gear bike.
...In preparation for. PBP 2015

I was hoping to do the 1000km version of Endless Mountains, but I guess Tom decided not to do it this year. Probably so he didn't have to watch me suffer

Well, it's hard for me to set realistic goals because I have been cycling for only 11 months now. But I will tell you all what I'm thinking, subject to change because it may be overly ambitious. I will have to see as I get into it.
One flat-ish century (in 4 days)
One hilly century in 11 weeks (April)
One moderately hilly 70 mi ride at altitude, 6 months from now (August)
One hilly century at altitude, 7 months from now (September)
And if all of that goes well, maybe a double century in December
The first two are very realistic. I think I will know after the 70-mi ride at altitude if the century at altitude is reasonable. I'll also have to see if I want to keep up formalized training vs just riding in an unstructured way. So no promises on anything past the first two rides, I will just have to see how it goes.

After my first year of cycling last year included 3 centuries, my goals this year include a double-century (VT 200 on 100), and some hills climbs (BUMPS), and some more centuries. Above it all, my goal is to stay healthy.

Each year we try on our tandem to get so far we can. Might only be 200 km, might be 600 km: the game to get as far as possible is one of the reasons we are doing it - to see as much of the roads around as possible, different roads, new areas...

No real goals this year. I guess I'm kind of burned out so I'll ride, more or less, for fun. 2-3 evenings after work, Saturday club rides, etc. No 1200's - one of my friends is talking about another kayak/riverboat trip in the Amazon so I'll do that instead of a 1200/vacation.
Having said that, the AZ brevet group has a 400 on March 8th. My longest day, YTD, is about 60-miles but I'll probably give the 400 a go. I figure that if I call myself a LD rider, I need at least one 200-250 mile day a year.
I haven't thought much about PBP but I believe having a 400 in 2014 is better than not having any longish rides for registration purposes. I could be wrong though and I'm sure someone will correct or confirm as necessary.
