2014 -- 1000-Mile Month Challenge

Note: I know this won't fit into everyone's training plans, or life plans, and I know this will not interest everyone, so there is absolutely no pressure to participate in this challenge. If you don't want to participate in this one, that's OK. But it is do-able (I've done it many times) and may encourage some of us to get out there and ride more.

The challenge: Ride 1000 miles in at least one month this year ... or as many months as you want ... go for all 12 months if you have the time and energy!!

I know lots of you ride this amount and more during your "season", so let us know how it's going.

If you don't quite make 1000 miles in a month, check out the 1000-Kilometer Month Challenge:

2014 - January completed.
Rodriguez fixed gear on the road: 1,673 km (1,045.6 miles)
Dolan track bike on the Burnaby indoor Velodrome: 425.4 km (265.9 miles)
Total cumulative for January: 2,098.4 km (1,311.5 miles)

Not too much rain or snow, pretty clean roads, lots of fog, though. Heading into some cold weather (well, cold by Pac NW standards anyway, just below freezing) into February.

2014 - February completed.
Rodriguez fixed gear on the road: 1,586 km (991 miles)
Dolan track bike on the Burnaby indoor Velodrome: 359 km (224 miles)
Total for February: 1,945 km (1,215.6 miles)

Cold weather (well, by coastal Pac NW standards) much of the month. Some light snow towards the end of February, but the roads were still ridable. Definitely the most difficult month to get in the 1600 km due to weather and shortness (both of daylight and number of days in the month).

Based on what I was reading today that is a long time for a 1000 miles. Some folks are riding the Iditerod trail . First group only did 350 miles. Next will go the whole way in about two weeks.

The whole thing is on the web.

2014 - March completed.
Rodriguez fixed gear on the road: 2,064 km - 39 of it on the velodrome (1,290 miles)
Dolan track bike on the Burnaby indoor Velodrome: 304 km (190 miles)
Cannondale Synapse demo bike (at Moab Skinny Tire Festival): 90 km (56 miles)
Total for February: 2,458 km (1,536 miles)

Aided by two early season brevets: a fairly flat 200km followed by a hilly, rainy, windy 300km. Plus some longish rides at the Moab Skinny Tire Festival. Cold mornings in Moab, but it was nice to get out of the Pac NW rain!

Got January with 1003.38 miles. Missed February but got 1200.72 in March and 2401 miles in April. Rode 15 centuries for the April and had at least one double metric each week now since April 1st. Got to finish off the last 35 miles to finish off the double metric for this week though.

2014 - April completed.
Rodriguez fixed gear on the road: 1,605 km (1,003 miles)
Dolan track bike on the Burnaby indoor Velodrome: 151 km (94 miles)
Total for April: 1,756km (1,097 miles)

Few km in April due mostly to being on a cycling tour in Turkey with a varied group. Did lots of long, steep climbs over very rough paved roads on the fixie, though.

2014 - May completed.
Rodriguez fixed gear on the road: 2,458 km (1,536 miles)
Dolan track bike on the Burnaby indoor Velodrome: 184 km (115 miles)
Total for April: 2,642 km (1,651 miles)

Starting to get in some longer rides, a 400 km brevet and then a 600 split over the weekend junction of two months - 350 km for May, 250 km for June. The odo on the Rodriguez fixie should tick over the 10,000 km point sometime next week.

You all are doing an impressive job here!!

I've done several 1000 mile months, but never 5 or 7 in a row.

Forgot to do the June update:
Rodriguez fixie: 2,443 km
Dolan track bike: 229 km
Total for June: 2,672 km (1,670 miles)

Started the month by riding the last 250 km of a weekend 600 km brevet. There was also a 200 km ride in Olympia, but generally I was just spending more time on the bike after work.

That is it for me, I can't do any more months. I am a slow rider and it takes too much of my time.

July results:

Rodriguez fixie: 2,255 km
Dolan track bike: 250 km
Total for July: 2,505 km (1,565 miles)

No really long rides in July, just one 100-miler in Whatcom County, WA. August is the biggie, I've already done a 300-km brevet and then tapering for the Hoodoo 500 on the fixie, over 800 km and 10,000 meters of climbing.

August results:

Rodriguez fixie: 2,632
Dolan track bike: 109
Total for August: 2,741 (1,713 miles)

The biggie this month was the 520-mile (835 km) Hoodoo 500. I also did a 300-km brevet two weeks before Hoodoo to set up for it, and then just tapered down from there. Would have preferred doing 400 or even 600 km two weeks before. Two weeks after I had done my 600 for this year, I felt just super! Heading into two weeks after the Hoodoo, I am still feeling a little tired, not really able to comfortably get above 300 watts on the climbs.

July: 1377 (including Tour de Wyoming)
Aug: 1362 (including CANDISC)
Sept: 1386
Oct: 1366

That's my most solid streak of biking I've accomplished. I was hoping to add November with comparable mileage, but winter set in far too early.

So, looking at it timewise, it's about 60 to 80+ hours a month on the bike?

I haven't updated, but I've missed two months of 2014, hope to get December for 10/12.

And the 60-80 is about right. I'll average around 15 mph. Half of mine is long rides on weekends, half is evening rides of 20-30 miles.

Only three months for me in 2014, I know, what a slacker.

April, 1,223
June 1,179
Sept. 1,117

Several others in the 900+ . . . but those don't count.

my best month was May, with 878 miles (May 31 was the Eastern Sierra double century). June would have been close, but I was out of town the first weekend

I'm shooting for 9,000 but I'll have to be consistent this last week to get there. My yearly mileage is lopsided because I was a runner up until the middle of May. However I'm not new to the sport as I rode a lot from my early forties up thru to my late fifties.
