The automobile costs calculator needs you!

    Hi people

After one year managing the automobile costs calculator, we just had 54 users filling in for USA!
It's a very low ratio, considering USA is the country where people have more cars and good access to Internet.
Besides, the calculator has a good page rank.

    Kindly check:
    Automobile costs calculator

We are making statistical analysis, and the form is totally anonymous; so if you could fill in, we'd be really appreciated
Tell other people who have cars to fill in as well. We always share the results.

All the code is freeware, in case you want to download it or implement it elsewhere
    http://github.com/jfoclpf/autocosts

    Thank you so much

But many people who are active on this forum often don't have cars so the calculator is irrelevant to them. You have to reach peoplewho have to drive fifty miles to a low paying job.

I would love to live car-free. I admire those that had the wisdom to arrange their life in a human scale livable way.

Someday's, even with a car, I can barely make it from point to point in time. Someday, as far as I can see I may make it to car light-ish. I'm sure there are others on here. So I lurk.

I have a car, and commute by bike trying for 1 time a week, telecommute another. There are those that drive part then park, and ride. As I get in better shape that's how I'm planning a second day.

But my car costs would skew the survey. It's a 2003 Camry, paid for... So it's mainly gas, tires, and occasional oil and it gets good mileage.

ok, but you can try it anyway, all the inputs are important, even the outliers.

I do not plan with this topic, to discuss the subject of the other topic. I'm just appealing people to fill in the form, if I may.

No bicycling content. No car free living content. More gab about car costs from individuals w/o any direct knowledge of subject, more promotion of one individual's software scheme. Same old, same old. The can't get enough of this crap should be joining soon to add the carbon rap and the-end-of-the-world-is-nigh wailing.

Why do I need an online calculator to tell me how much my car costs? I already know how much my car costs. What is the agenda of this site?

Also, there are a lot of subsections in this forum. You chose to post and ask in the living car free section. Living car free by nature means the people do not have cars. How are a group of people who do not own cars suppose to fill in the costs of their cars?

I can not fill in from the very start. You want "Commercial Value" and then for description is says to give the price you paid. The commercial value of my car is much higher than what I actually paid. Which number do I use? Even a year and a half after purchase, the commercial value of my car is much higher than what I paid for it. Price paid is not the same as value. For what I paid for my car, I am guessing the value will cross that point in about 3 years from purchase. That skews the ownership cost by quite a bit, by about $6000. That was with a used car purchase.

I work for an automotive OEM supplier. That gives me a pretty hefty discount on certain brands of new cars. Other cars I've owned would be skewed by even more than the above $6000.

I jump down to the next line, insurance. I am married and own 2 cars with 2 drivers. I don't have a break down of what insurance would cost per car because it would be different if I was by myself and only had 1 car than the number my bill displays for each individual car.

Jumping down to vehicle tax. I could put the $1100 I paid in vehicle tax. But then I notice it says "$/year". I do not pay a yearly vehicle tax. I only paid sales tax. Where do I put sales tax at for the time of purchase?

This is just a number, cost of a car, that can not be calculated and stated as average. There are too many variables.

When it's all said and done, on the front page, there is only 1 place to click. That is the donate button. The button at the bottom to go to page 2 does nothing. The heading above, Automobile costs calculator, is not clickable. I manually typed the URL Automobile costs calculator into the browser and it came back to the same calculator.

wow, why all the negative replies? just think, if there are a bazillion apps floating around to highlight the actual costs of owning a car, there is that much more likelihood of someone stumbeling on one and paying attention...

OH! on a brighter note? what episode of Futurerama was that image from? I like that.
FB4K - This December, 2014, 5288 kids received bikes for Christmas. For many, it was their first bike, ever. Every bike, new and used, was donated, built, cleaned and repaired. That amounts to well over 10,000 volunteer hours this fall, just in the Twin Cities. Check us out on FaceBook: FB4K.

    thank you for feedback

Commercial value is what you meant. It might be the value you paid for the car, but not always as you said. So, you shall put the true commercial value when you acquired it. If someone gives you a certain object for free that costs on the market 500 USD, that is the commercial value, even if the item was given, because you know that someone out there would give you 500USD for that object.

It's a calculator, it makes math operations, just an online app. like billions out there in the web. It has not an "agenda" if I understand what the word means.

    Thank you

Why not query the annual income of individuals/households as well as size of households? It also might just have a tad of influence on the car owning status of the responders. And be just as relevant to the stated purpose this forum.

I don't get the relation between living car free and the size of households. We live in a big house in The Hague, and we're car free.

Has zero relevancy to LCF- moving to Feedback and may yet still end up in the Trash.

ok, thank you lighting my mind, I was not completely aware in which forum should I put this post. Nevertheless your light consideration to "Trash", touch rudeness and disconsideration to other people's effort.

Usually people get banned for not following the rules, which in itself, is rude.

Well maybe for some, but there are a lot of people in this world; in China, in Turkey, in India and other developing countries, who buy a car because it is expensive. The car is a symbol of wealth. It says to others that the owner is no longer poor. In Holland and Denmark, countries with a high standard of living, people can forget about cars as a status symbol and ride their bikes because bikes are more practical.

precise, that's what I'm trying to say for ages in some other topics. Mobility, even in western world, is not always the primary factor for purchasing an automobile.
