Not a bad habit to have!

I crushed my morning commute this morning. I'm quite sure that, had there been any other cyclists on the road, they would have been awestruck for the brief moment they were able to see me, before I vanished into the distance. Seriously, though, I'm feeling fairly strong right now. Hopefully Saturday's climbing won't dramatically change that outlook.

And having now done some small ring riding on the Q-Rings, I feel I might need to have the higher ratio engage just a tad earlier, on that ring only. I sometimes feel the higher ratio engage, and from what I understand, it should engage earlier enough that you don't feel that. I'll give it more time, and some climbs, before I change anything.

Now if I could just get rid of that awful "Trek BB90 Creak" that has developed!

You don't deduct the cost of the images from the winnings, no way. I would take the prize money and put into my "racing retirement pizza party fund" located in a cup I won in a race.

Went to the "graveyard crit course" with a team mate to work on lead outs and sprinting. I sprinted hard but not killer and had some good numbers. Four of my six finish sprints had 5" power above 1150 watts. To bad we weren't racing today. I have also been working on sprinting OTS with my nose closer to bar level. Not there but getting down much deeper than last year.

I am down with not a cold but the flu. And, this one is nasty. Fever, severe chest congestion, body aches (like I tried to stand in front of a charging AJ and lost!)...I don't recommend this to anyone. I haven't been able to do anything since Monday. I've also dropped weight. Setback? I hope not for long. 10K next Sunday, Sea Otter in three weeks....

Now, I have to go to work. If they don't send me home....

From observing fellow riders, it seems the way our immune systems respond to the physical strains of our sport varies greatly. For some, the exertion puts their immune systems 'on the brink' and they are more susceptible to bugs. For others, the reverse is true.

Great win. Would you mind filling us in on how you got away with 5 to go; whether it was a planned tactic, etc?

And when it comes to suffering images, I'm afraid that, while I have suffered greatly, thus far I have no evidence to support my claim.

Since you asked, sure. Those pictures were taken at the 2011 Chris Thater Memorial in Binghamton, NY, a USA Crits/NRC race. This was the M45+ race, which I did about an hour after the M35+ race. Both races were full of national class riders, mainly sprinters, from all over the country. The course is about 0.8mi with a hill and four technical corners, two of them off-camber, all of which plays to my strengths. In the first half of the M45+ race, I stayed near the front and stuck with the sprinters as they went for primes. I was not going to beat them. With 5 to go, they rang the bell for a prime, so I rolled off the front into a kilo effort. When I looked back before crossing the line to see if I had to sprint, I had a big gap, maybe 8-10 seconds. It took me about 100 milliseconds to decide to hit the gas and go for it. I had nothing to lose. If they caught me at the line, I made the only move I could of made in a field like that. For the next four laps, I modulated my effort as best as I could, jamming out of the saddle at 100% effort up the hill, then back to 80% on the downhill, and 90% for the flats. I built the gap to 25 seconds. I didn't have power on board, but my HR had hit a new max, so I backed off just a little with 2 to go, let it settle, and then went flat out for the final lap. Just before I hit turn four, I looked back, and the field hadn't hit turn three, so I backed off and started sitting up about 100m from the line. It was definitely the greatest win of my career, past or present.

I'm seeing a pattern with me that falls into the "on the brink" category. The 10K run I did last month, where I had the PR, knocked me for a loop and I was on the verge of illness for a week. Then the circuit race. I was fine, then started downhill Monday afternoon. How frustrating is this? I'm in the shape of my life, I've never been so strong or fit - and I never used to get sick until I became fit. I guess I just need to get stronger.
