    Thanks Cleve. Most of the replays recommend short but Hermes (our track guru) recommends as long as possible. I'm confused. Maybe buying one of each is the way to go. Man, my bag is getting heavy!

    Ha Ha. There has to be a contrarian to keep it an honest discussion.

    The advice I have received is all over the map on crank length. Old school conventional wisdom is short cranks for sprinting and long cranks for pursuit. Keep in mind that sprinting constitutes a lot of track racing and pursuit very little. For example, if you are a good sprinter, there is match sprints, 500 meters, team sprint, scratch race, points race and keirin. Pursuiters have individual pursuit, team pursuit, scratch race if they can brake away and the points race if they can lap the field.

    Going for short cranks is good for most events. Are short cranks good for pursuit? Possibly. Shorter cranks may offer a more aero position and good pursuiters will spin fast anyway which favors shorter cranks.

    With a fused ankle, I do not know. I like the two different crank lengths on each side.

    Here is what I know for sure. When the money runs out what is under your ass is highly optimized.

    18 hours of work yesterday. Dinner at 10pm, finished up work at 12:30am. Slept until 10:30am. On the trainer in an hour or so. The first phase of the project went very well, though. Next weekend is the final push. Once that is over, I'm taking a few days off.

    I'm thinking of switching to 110's, so I can pedal through all the corners in crit's.

    Depending on the course you might be able to even the crank measurement by going with a 220 on the outside. Definitely a 4 turn course setup.

    I've been joined in Spain by my friend the coach, a few other adults and eighteen teenage racers for the biannual training camp. Some of the kids are veterans of two or three of these occasions, and as they get older the physical progress they are making is amazing. On Thursday last week I was leading out a small bunch on a very fast section of road. As we hit a slight rise after a fractionally downhill section I wasn't surprised to see the coach jump past me - he's an old track sprinter of some quality. I was surprised, though, to find a fourteen year-old girl absolutely glued to his wheel. As they went by I glanced at my Garmin. I was doing 35 mph. Admittedly, the kid is rated about number three in the UK for her age, but still...

    New topic: Inline barrel adjusters. Use 'em or lose 'em? I can count the number of times I've used them on one one hand. I adjust the RD using the adjust on the RD. Only reason to do otherwise would be in a race, and if my RD isn't working right at that point, I've messed up. Which is, of course, possible for me to do. But I would frankly be leery of touching the FD adjuster in a race situation for fear of causing a lost chain. The chances of my even remembering which way to turn it in that situation are pretty remote.

    They look fugly, and I calculate that they cost .0000000354 watts worth of resistance.

    Of course, I may have to include them just to get enough length from the cables - which was the situation with the last frame. Tried to leave it off the FD, but had to go back and put it in.

    Had em on the old frame, never used them. The new frame is Di2 ready so no adjusters.

    I rarely use them too but when I do I'm glad that I have them.

    No other Americans at the Worlds! Is Sarah competing in the Omnium? Sarah probably would have matched or beaten he qualifying time if the Aussie had ridden faster, but a famous race car driver once said something like, drive just fast enough to win.

    Technicality...You did watch her but it was 2011. Last year, USAC split Elite Track Nationals and the omnium was held in South Carolina and the other events at Carson. Sarah did not attend the Carson events.
