This morning - interval training again, over and unders. 12 minutes of three sets, 1 min over LT, 2 min below x4 followed by 6 min rest, total x 3. These are getting a little easier and our speeds are getting faster. Since we are riding the same course every morning we train I know the landmarks and they are coming earlier in the workout. I don't know if I am moving my FPT much, from what I have been reading that is a different workout and one that I probably should be doing - but this is the work out I signed up for and it is doing great for my regular riding. I think after the race next month I will see about changing to one of the workouts specific to raising endurance power.

CF, I like the 3x12 minutes. Duration at or near threshold builds threshold power. As you get more comfortable, you may want to increase the duration to 20 minutes and do 2x20 minutes at or near threshold power.

Hi Sara,
There are races for older Masters (50+) that are both USAC and non-USAC. For instance, tomorrow, Tuesday, May 24th, and Wednesday, May 25th, are the Pasadena Senior Games. My teammate who is proud to be a 72 year-old Masters woman will be racing with some women in her age grade. There will also be women starting at 50. This competition is much more low key and I think it's a good way to get a taste of mass start racing.
Of course there will be some women in the youngest categories who have been racing for a number of years and are competitive with younger women but they generally take off early and kind of race by themselves.
Also, the Cyclo-Vets, a Masters club in San Diego (actually Carlsbad) traditionally conducts a weekend of racing for Masters who are over 60. Again, this tends to be a little more low key than a normal USAC weekend race.
As Hermes recommended, you can also enter a time trial and even though you'd generally be racing as a Cat 4 woman, sometimes there are some Masters Women classifications. Regardless, you don't have to worry about mixing it up in a pack of experienced racers.
Hope this helps.

As an aside, I ran a 10K race this past Sunday, and the older gals were massed and scored together - 50 to 59. It happens a lot!

Finally had a good race today. I raced in our local training race series and rode with the big boys in the A race. I have been slowly getting my power back from the sinus infection in April.
The race was fast with several really hard accelerations that I had to close up gaps in the field or compete a bridge back up to the leaders when we were racing or chasing single line. Those efforts really hurt but I was able to recover while racing and live to suffer some more. Coming out of turns and hitting breakneck speed a few times every 2 mile lap is what concerned me about racing in the A race. I had power OTS then transitioned to seated and it was not an issue today. My race plan was to sit in the field for as long as possible and if dropped, get back in the field and sit at the rear of the pack. That didn't happen today as I was able stay in mid-pack. The breaks didn't stick and we finished in a field sprint for the win. I wasn't so vain in that I felt I belonged at the front for the final sprint with the Cat 1's and 2's, but was well placed and ended up around 12-15 out of the 40 racers. Granted a lot of guys don't sprint for 20th place but it's a training race and that is why I sprinted.
Final tally was 42 miles of racing @ 26.7 mph.

I flew to Long Beach and attended a track session at LAV. This session featured shorter duration efforts but more of them. The motor games that I did last Friday complimented this workout.

A'Jet, Those training races seem like fun and the competition looks very good. Participation in that will pay dividends for the rest of the year.

I had a great business meeting and went to the gym. I warmed. Up on an exercycle and did a core and back workout. Tomorrow is anther day at the track. My legs have a slight soreness to them. I do not know what that means other than they better get over it since more is in store tomorrow.

40 miler today. Managed to maintain an avg speed of 19.7 mph for the first 25+ miles, finished with an avg of 18.56 mph. One of the more, though few flatter courses. A total of 1397' of climbing.
I'm working my way from the 2nd group to the 1st group on the Monday night LBS ride. Competitive ride typically 3 different groups, total of 35 or so riders so far showing. These 12-20 year younger riders are my goal, they just don't know it yet.
Tomorrow will be a rest day as our son is moving to CA on Friday morning so we will finalizing things to help he make sure he is good to go. Though we will certainly miss him, it is exactly what I did 30 years ago. Fortunately my wife's family live in southern CA so he will have a local support system.
We'll see what the weather brings on Friday, will it be in doors on the trainer or back out for another long, push myself ride. Hopefully if the weather is good this weekend I'll finally have the wife out on the tandem... so many choices to preoccupy my mind while getting use to our son off on his adventure. Shoot I'm still getting use to the fact one of our daughters lives on the other side of the state just 2 hrs away. It's all about the transitions...

A 2 hr Z2 ride ended up being cut short to 1.5 hrs by the storms that were predicted to stay West. The 3 of us ended up at a country brew pub soaking wet but with money from our saddle bags. The establishment is no more than 5 miles from any of our homes. We called our wives for sag and dry clothes and all had dinner together.

I toatlly agree. It is a lot of fun racing with with the big boys and the speed work will allow me to stay with any age group pack come state championship time.

Is your son a cyclist? If so and if he's interested, I can guide him to an appropriate club and/or group rides.

I did a sprint tournament and did one flying 200 and 4 match sprints. My legs were very sore the next day. It does not take much change to make mine sore

Don't mince words
Last night I did a 40km TT of 4-5km loops. The 1st and 3rd legs were into the wind, which was blowing steadily about 20 mph with gusts to 25-29. I made up a lot of time on the downwind legs and finished in 1:14:32, shaving :53 off my last month's time. I have work to do but am feeling good about getting faster.

Especially in that much of a wind. Gratz!
I'm in a recovery week - I've only done recovery and base effort commute miles. Saturday, I skewer my racing wheels on for the first time, and go play with the A's on the Bicycle Ranch (LBS) ride. The guy leading the A's two weeks ago had just set a Cat2 record on one of the Tour de Gila stages. My long term goal is of course to stay with the pack the entire ride, but my goal this Saturday is get through this long shallow climb (my trouble area) without being dropped. Made it half way last time. Once I can do that, I'll worry about the steeper climb that comes later in the ride.

Hi,
While my work computer finishes backing up I'll post a quick race report. Did four (4) races over two (2) days at the Pasadena (formerly California) Senior Games. Participation was down but the guy who has been winning the road races at the state and national level was there. Day 1 I got the silver in the 5K ITT and 40K road race. I didn't ride the 5K very well but for the 40K road race I was in a 20 mile breakaway with "the guy" and my buddy who was in the 55-59 age group. "The guy" (I'm not using his name because I'm not sure if he wants the publicity) dropped me going into the bell so I ended up with a silver.
Day 2 I got the silver (again) in the 10K ITT. I met my personal goals: negative splits for each of the three laps and >25 MPH average (actual was 25.1 MPH). The killer was that I missed the gold by 12 seconds. The last race was the 20K road race. I didn't do a lick of work and stayed on or one wheel back from "the guy." The last corner leads to about 300m slight uphill stretch with the last 50m to the line being slightly downhill. Short story is I executed exactly as I wanted to and won the sprint by at least an inch. Finally, after three years of doing these games I got a gold.
Now I need to get out of here so that I can do some active recovery at the velodrome and see Hermes and Velo Diva. Saturday is the big 40K ITT for the district championships. No medal aspirations, just hopes for a PR on the course.

I found myself really exhausted, yesterday I was supposed to do a 35 mile fast club ride, went to get ready but had a little extra time so I laid down, fell asleep and missed the ride. I had to drive that night 4 hrs to Boston anyway. Worked in Beantown all day today and got back after dinner. Two days off the bike and I am feeling better now. Will do a training ride in the AM and hopefully some more hill work this weekend as well as an 85 mile solo ride, have a century to do next weekend.
