The GMR ITT is one of my favorite hill climb time trials.

My nemesis is also a climber it seems. She did it in 46:59 last May and won her age group.

It seems to me that most of the good TT'ers are also good climbers. Similar ability, I think. Me, I can't sprint up a hill. Unless it's only ten feet high.

I finally got a chance to watch the videos. Wow! That IS a climb!

In my very limited experience with going up, those very long ascents that don't even look like going up can be grueling, he makes it look so easy.

One of the reasons I tour alone is that it means that I interact with strangers. With a companion, one tends to talk only to one another and remain a tourist, rather than a visitor.

So agree with this. All my trips are solo for a number of reasons, but this is also a major one.

It's darned good and a great incentive for us to go back to France!

Several years ago, Machka and I did what was (is) called the Seven Peaks Alpine Ascent Challenge, that involved the best climbs in the alpine region of Victoria, Australia. One in particular, up Mt Baw Baw, is hors categorie, and yes, it was tough from start to finish even though it was the shortest in distances on the list.

Books looks good. One I like for European climbs is "Mountain High - Europe's 50 Greatest Cycle Climbs" with lots of great photos in a coffee table book size. For US climbs I bought a few of John Summerson's books. Less photos but more details which I found extremely helpful in picking climbs for my US trip.

Congratulations on riding up Baw Baw! Having ridden both, I would rate it a close second in sheer brutality to the Mortirolo in Italy; a climb some guy called Lance is claimed to have called the hardest climb he had raced up. Baw Baw is a bit of a Jekyll and Hyde climb, with the first 5.7km a mellow 4.2%. Final 6.5km kicks up and averages 11.5% maxing out at 20% on the aptly named Winch corner! :twitchy:

Yeup! He's a former pro. They do that! Some of the people on here make climbs look easy, too. I'm not one of them!

I'm torn. Just got this email:

----
NOW OPEN TOP TO BOTTOM!
Northwest Magnum 6 Opens Thursday!

Cold temperatures and Tahoe's Highest Base have allowed our allstar snowmaking crew to work tirelessly to open up Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe Top to Bottom! Northwest Magnum 6 will open for the season tomorrow morning continuing what has already been a record setting early season.

From the Northwest Magnum 6, runs available will include Upper Northwest trail down through Kit Carson Bowl, as well as the already opened Around The World.
----
It's supposed to hit 61 today. Bike or ski? Haven't used my season pass yet. What's that? Bike today and ski tomorrow?

Perfect advice.

Today a perfect example of the truth of my signature line. Drank too much booze last night, the first time for a while, and woke up feeling less bushy-tailed than usual. And it was cold, and the wind was blowing 20mph, and after all, I'm not really training for anything specific, am I...?

Anyway, I had breakfast, drank some coffee, told myself to HTFU and headed out. And I had a great time. 2.38 in high Z1/low Z2 getting buffeted around on a blustery but beautiful day.

You didn't drink too much...
You had the brown bottle flu

I'm just popping in to say hi!

I've been chained to my computer for the couple of days to meet my monthly deadline for work. I have to finish by 2pm today because Mr. YogaKat and I have tickets to A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum tonight.

Busy days - missing my bike.

shovelhd 11-21-15 03:56 PM

Hey, life got in the way. If it didn't, you'd be dead.

You can take that to the bank.

YogaKat 11-22-15 11:05 AM

Wise words.

I'm going to have to remember this one.

Racer Ex 11-23-15 07:00 PM

Dammit.

Riding up Rose on the bike path with my head down to avoid staring into the setting sun doing some tempo climbing. Forgot they have 8" steel poles set in concrete in the middle of the path near several of the road crossings. Managed to get my hand off the bars and hit it sliding left flush on the bar. Bike not damaged, things moved around a bit but I knocked everything back into place and torqued on things to make sure nothing was going to fall off.

Dislocated my ring finger, busted a knuckle. Took the brunt of the crash with the pole to my ribs. Not broken, definitely bruised. Nice 1000' climb home once I got off the ground.

Feel like:

Oh man. Feel better. :(

Racer Ex 11-23-15 08:00 PM

Candy is dandy but liquor is quicker.

Tequila and Canuckistan whiskey. Separate doses.

I still hurt but give much less credibility to the sensations.

sarals 11-23-15 08:02 PM

Yikes.....take it easy!!!

LAJ 11-23-15 08:37 PM

None of that feels particularly good, Racer Ex. Heal well, and enjoy the cocktails.

You and my liver think a lot alike.

Why don't we design easier shoelaces? These things are stupid.

They are. Especially the one on my right boot - the boots I wear at work. It never stays tied!

Single malt. You don't need as much. Your liver will like that. :)
