A'Jet, can I join your group of steady Eddie's?

Sure, next time you are in NE Ohio. The weekly fixie ride group has been initiated by my coach and is open to anyone. Yesterday's 9 riders included a young lady preparing to do RAAM solo this summer, one of the area's hot young riders, a few guys who train hard but don't race, a few of us in between who are looking for improvement and coach Pete. There were the random rollers or small hills and there was some separation between riders but we always got right back together. Watching my cadence and speed on the computer our average speed on flats was 18 - 20 mph. Because the route went through some neighborhoods and on the bike trails with many road crossings the average speed for the ride was in the 16's.

Okay - the Big Sur Half Marathon. It was one of my better runs. I ran smart and stayed within myself. I ran the first ten miles at a high ten minute pace, and then the last three miles I surged and then upped the pace some more, and held it, to low nine minute miles. My time was 2:18:33, 10:33 pace - 3222 out of 6104, 57 out of 227 in my age group, 1720 out 4449 women (women were 65% of the field - we rocked it!).

From now, bicycle! I will be running more 10K's and halfs, and there is a full marathon in my future. But, this is the last I'll talk about running here.

Congrats Sara! We are all proud of you. Very high placings all around. Having that much in the tank for last 3 miles showed how fit you are.

Thanks, AJ! I'm not in league you fellas are, but I'm doing pretty well! I did a one hour spin class this morning for "recovery". Am I sick, or what? LOL!!!

By the way, the Fuji Track Pro just went on eBay. Something had to give, and I decided it would be track. I enjoyed the velodrome, very much, but I can't realistically take up track racing with any consistency. It's over and hour each way to the Hellyer Park Velodrome, and gas is just too expensive. Honestly, too, the idea of smacking my face into the pavement again does not appeal to me. The risk is high in close quarters racing (with no brakes!), and I'd just rather not (see what "thinking about it" will get you?) I'll stick with tours, road races, and a time trial or two, along with triathlon (which I really enjoy). I so want to do a road race, and I wish I could have made the race with Red in September! There is this year, though.

I rode 3 hrs with my coach yesterday and in our conversations he told that I need to forget about the DFL and move on. He really doesn't think a DFL is a big deal even though I do. Well, I made a movie to help get it behind me. This is the last time I'll mention DFL at bike forums.;) Promise.:D

A'Jet, That was your best work yet.

Hermes 11-21-11 10:18 PM

Leg and back workout at the gym but no cycling.

Allegheny Jet 11-22-11 06:12 AM

Hermes, be careful if you keep doing leg work everyday you just might end up becoming quadzilla.:D

1 hr on the rollers yesterday. Making it different and possibly special was that my wife rode her bike on the trainer at the same time. (this may lead to some interesting times) However my brief ride took for ever as she put a pop music channel on the projector/tv system with almost every song sounding like the same chick mumbling words together. A huge positive came just at the conclusion of my brief ride when this song came on. :thumb: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wyx6J...eature=related

That budget seems high. Did make it at Starbucks drinking a Grande Latte?

It was great that your wife joined you for the roller session. My leg workouts focus on the hip and back, ad/ab and hamstrings. My quads get work but not as much isolation work.

Aside from the usual Xtranormal fees the hot chick cost $0.75 plus the background images were a huge investment added for dramatic effect.

Well worth that cost. The hot chick star and pics made the movie.

Way to go, Sara! And it's okay to talk running, so long as you mix in a little bicycle verbiage... You know, like "I went for 10K run, then came home and patted my road bike as I headed for the shower."

Hi AzTR, my cure for that is if I am on or near the front then I just let them go. It's funny when they get several hundred yards up the road and look back and think, "Where did everyone go?" Duh?

Hi Sara, congratulations to you and Red Rider for showing that some cyclists can run pretty well too. :) As for me, I just hope I don't hurt myself trying to cross-train a bit this winter. :o

Hey AJ, if I counted all of the times I was DFL over my racing "career" I'd probably quit racing. <JK> Really, DFL is just part of the game. As I've said before, winning is nice but it's only a small part of why I race. The guys and gals who I've known who raced only because they loved winning generally didn't stay in the sport very long because unless you are really good, you lose much more often than than you win. (You know 2nd place is the first loser types.) Anyway, glad to know that you aren't a threat to society. ;)

Cleave 11-22-11 10:40 AM

Well, I'm just happy to finally be over the low-level stomach bug that I had. It lasted most of a week and killed my energy. I still managed to ride at the velodrome on Tuesday and Thursday but no motor game for me. Also rode Saturday and Sunday and got caught in the rain towards the end of my 38 mile ride on Sunday. We were barely averaging 17 MPH in a fierce headwind going south and we were never less than 25 MPH (with long stretches near 30 MPH) in the tailwind home until the last few miles when it started raining.

Not sure how I'll get some time on the bike before the Thanksgiving morning TT.

Allegheny Jet 11-22-11 08:57 PM

Core and resistance work this evening ending with 15 minutes on the rollers to loosen up.

Hermes 11-23-11 11:19 AM

I weighed in at 165 pounds this AM which is my lowest recorded weight since I was in my late teens. It is tradition in our household to race up Mount Hamilton Thanksgiving morning while the turkey is cooking but rain is forecast so the race will probably be cancelled. Even if the rain passes overnight, the mountain road will have a lot of debris and water which is not great for descending. I would not mind doing the 19 mile climb if I could get a ride down the mountain.

Our plan is to have a nice T-Day day off and then do a 3 day training camp Friday, Saturday and Sunday focusing on duration.

Happy Thanksgiving to all!

lprice1023 11-23-11 02:11 PM

165 is what I am aiming for. I know that it will make a big difference in my riding. I have been 174 to 175 for the last year and now am working hard to get to the next level. I wish everyone a wonderful Thanksgiving.

AzTallRider 11-23-11 04:02 PM

I was at 192 this morning - want to race next season at 190.

I'm doing the cooking tomorrow, so am skipping the big traditional Phoenix Thanksgiving ride up South Mountain (which you are supposed to do with jersey pockets filled with rocks), since it starts about the time I need to be getting the bird ready for the oven. But I'm making up for that on Friday by doing a ride out to "EOP", which stands for End of Pavement, which gives you an inking. It goes out past Tortilla Flats, in the backcountry. I negotiated 6 minutes of z4 per hour of riding with Coach. I might just somehow forget my computer! :innocent:

Happy Thanksgiving!

Allegheny Jet 11-23-11 04:15 PM

AZTR, at the turnaround at the end of the pavement look for the Lost Dutchman. If you don't find any gold then stop for recovery brew in Tortilla Flats and look for my $1 bill stapled on the bar.

AJ, you made me choke on a perfectly good glass of V8 with that one! Great effort - you ought to make a full length feature! John Lassiter needs to know about you....
