Hi.

So the off season has been full of illness, stress, and little riding. Pretty much over the shingles and back on the bike though I'm easing into it -- riding every day since last Saturday though most of it has been easy. Should be working on a request for proposal for our architect finalists but I wanted to catch up a bit with what's going on in this sub forum. Who knew that picking an architect would be this complicated? I guess I'm making it complicated since the architectural services are costing a LOT more than I thought.

Glad to see that everyone else is doing reasonably well and sorry that I missed the chance to see Hermes and Velo Diva when they were in SoCal. I was really not in a position to do a TT and I THOUGHT that there was a memorial ride for a friend (who died of a heart attack while riding a week ago on Sunday) on the morning of the TT. Turns out it's this coming Saturday. Stress and old age I guess.

Our local association, SCNCA (Southern California / Nevada Cycling Association) has been messing with race categories and older Masters are particularly upset. Won't go into the details but the fallout is that next year, races that will be part of the SoCal Cup will offer these Masters categories: 40+, 50+, and 60+. The 35+ Cat 1/2 guys are still whining and I have little sympathy for them. 60+ almost disappeared but then it didn't. Racer Ex and I will be racing together next year when he makes some guest appearances but we'll both be racing with young 50 year-old guys.

Oh, and if you're over 40 and a Cat 5, you get to race with all of the other Cat 5s, not Masters.

These categories are mandated by the SCNCA for promoters who want their races to count for SoCal Cup points. In conjunction with that mandate, SCNCA has reduced the number of races that will offer cup points. In the past almost every race on the calendar offered points with varying point levels based on the race difficulty and prestige. Now there is a reduced list of races that offer points. Races that don't have SoCal Cup points can offer any categories that they want. SCNCA assumes that a lot of us race to compete in the year-long points series. We'll see what happens. The change makes it much more difficult for me to do 3 races in a day. Now my options are 50+, 40+, and Cat 3.

Last bit of bull is that I rode my bicycle to my chiropractor appointment today. On the way home, a driver came up from behind me, never passed me, and then proceeded to do the "right hook" maneuver right into me. Fortunately, neither of us were going very fast at the time. I think I instinctively threw my left elbow at the car as I would in a race if someone came down on me because my elbow definitely hit his car. My shoe also hit the car -- there's a mark on the carbon sole -- and my shoe popped out of the pedal. Somehow, I stayed upright. I yelled at the guy and another driver on the cross street saw the whole thing and yelled at the guy too. He told the guy that he could have killed me. I also caught it on video since I always ride with my Fly6 (rear facing video camera) these days.

If I post the video, I'll have to edit out some colorful language. After I calmed down, I realized that somehow my chain had popped off the front chain ring. Also kind of undid all of the work that my chiropractor did.

Everyone in the US, have a safe and food filled Thanksgiving. Everyone else, have a great rest of the week.

This was inevitable, given that I moved to 55+ this year. This is about the 3rd time I've had the rug yanked out from under me when I've been the bottom of the age group.

Glad to hear you're surviving and getting some riding in.

Thanks all. Looking at the video carefully, his rear bumper never got in front of the back of my rear wheel. (Clear as mud?) IOW, he never completely passed me. I have to believe he never even saw me. From the video he is clearly looking forward and he's not playing with a phone or looking down. I guess this is partially why the vehicular cycling fanatics say that bike lanes are more dangerous than riding in and controlling the lane. Then again, as inattentive as he was, he might have plowed into the back of me since he may not have been registering anything smaller than a car.

@Racer Ex, kind of like this morning. I wore my dark lenses and it was cloudy for about 3/4 of my ride.

One more news item. My wife is going to start riding a bit. She got injured training for this year's Long Beach Half Marathon. Last year she won her age group and she was hoping to repeat. Now she thinks she needs to cross-train. She was actually a swimmer in HS and college so cycling is her weak leg. Until yesterday, all she had was a Bianchi Milano urban bike. She commutes to work by bike once or twice per week so it's not like she never rides.

Anyway, with her triathlon ambitions I bought a no-name, carbon frame from China through ebay. It met her most important criterion -- it was cheap. Unbeknownst to me, prior to receiving it yesterday, it has Kamm-shaped aero tubes. Also the quality looks surprisingly good. I'm going to take the Campy 10-speed parts off of the Stowe that I rebuilt last year and put it on this bike. She's nervous about using clipless pedals. This road cycling thing could be a lot of fun for both of us or it could be a big mistake.

I probably did my worst ever attempt of the exterior Christmas lighting on our house. My wife has her women's club holiday party at our house tomorrow and life has been a bear with trying to keep up with her decorating ideas, furniture moving and cleaning. Before I left for my weekly night ride she actually said that the outside of the house "looks really nice", wow!, I got that going for me.

I'm glad you're okay, and I think the fact you have video is excellent.

I think that reporting these things is important. It puts stuff down in history so that if something else happens there's a pattern. With no reporting there's no pattern.

I've had a few of these happen, all long before I had a cam on my helmet for every training ride. One my elbow ended up under the side view mirror - I was waiting at a light, light turned green, and the car that got there after I'd been waiting just turned. I left a lot of Atomic Balm (heat rub) along the side of the car. Another I bumped along both passenger side doors before the car stopped (not completing the turn). The driver stopped, got out of his car, and yelled at me for hitting his car. Another a car turned while I was next to the front tire, give or take. I briefly debated rolling over the hood before deciding to either turn right really hard and risk getting caught under the car. Driver had a paper in her mouth, I think she was reading them when she turned right. That one I was going about 30-35 mph, by far the fastest of the three incidents. Curiously enough the COP that was right behind her didn't do a thing (I ended up saving it so I technically didn't crash, but I hit the car pretty hard with my arm/shoulder/leg/hip). He just waited until oncoming traffic cleared and then roared off.

Hmmm...1671 miles each way, ~$500 for gas both ways. No prize money for Cat 3 and below, WTF? As if I'd be eligible. But they do have a M60+ on Saturday...

Thanks all for the good thoughts.

@carpediemracing, I might have reported it if there was significant damage to me or my bike. Given the final result, I am very confident that a police officer would not have taken the time to write up the collision.

Back in 2006, I was involved in a head-on collision on a two-lane, mountain road (in my car). A woman coming down the mountain crossed the double yellow line and hit my car with me and my youngest son inside. I spent a couple of days in the hospital with a broken sternum and fortunately my son came away with relatively minor injuries. Despite injuring me and my son and destroying my car, the CHP officer did NOT cite her! They noted the conditions of the collision on a report but that was it.

A car versus bike collision with no material damage or injuries -- just move along, nothing to see here.
