Once I had a client thank me profusely for helping her dog for a discounted cost. She told me she really owed me one. I should write down her phone number and keep it in my pocket. Any time I needed a favor, I could just call her.
"I'll even pick you up from LAX during rush hour."
Lol, that's the ultimate expression of gratitude in LA.

How many of you have teenagers? My 16 year old son is generally responsible, friendly, volunteers at the food pantry, works really hard at school and gets OK grades. All great. But there is this thing where he seems to have literally no ability to think things through even a tiny bit before acting. Run the blender with the top off. Dump a half gallon of milk on the floor and try to mop it up one paper towel at a time, for an hour. Etc etc. I have said "just take a moment and think about it first" like a million times.
For most people there is a sort of constant assess, analyze, decide, act loop. Even my 12 year olds do this. Dogs do this every time they walk around a fence instead of trying to climb over it. But my 16 year old just stopped doing the first three steps sometime in the past year. This is standard teenage behavior, right? Right?

Mine are 20 and 25 so not too far removed. It could be just teenager stuff. Hormones make kids crazy. It also may be something else. Let's talk on Saturday.

So imagine realizing your finger was getting chewed on by one of these:
Trimming a plant and went one handed for a moment. Did not end well. I really was really hoping to see a finger there. You know how terrible things seem better when the outcome could have been much worse? Definitely one of those.
I rarely get shocky from an injury, but this one had me on the floor for a bit; hadn't slept well the night before and was feeling punky lousy when I woke up. Home by myself, took a few tries to get up and drive myself to the ER.
So kids, if you must trim a hedge, use both hands.

ugh. glad it wasn't worse.
I know what it's like to hope to see a finger there... but to be disappointed. Luckily, not index.

So I'm laying on the couch watching the Tour the next morning and there's a knock on my patio door. My gardener is there holding up the trimmer. He said it's name was Christine.

Would be equally a valley climber joke there too!
Speaking of which - I've just started slowly building a rack of Ice gear to finally give it a go after all these years plus some used AT skis to head out into the back country. Potentially going to need the solace of the wilderness...

Edit: NVM. We have something else in common. Problems with landscaping tools. Mine are unfortunately permanent.

Ouch! I hope it heals up fast.
I completely lost the last joint of my ring finger at age 10 during a tussle over an exacto knife with my sister. She won. The docs reattached it, but it looks weird. Seems like a common thread in this crowd for some reason.

Having worked in carpentry for many years I saw and heard about a thousand injury stories. My all time favorite was the guy who was cutting plywood with a skilsaw. Another guy walked by and said "you're not cutting all the way through." The first guy said "yes I am," and ran his hand along the bottom of the cut to check - directly beneath the running saw. He had the saw set just right and kerfed out his fingers about 1/32" deep.

Good luck racing this weekend. Of course we all know what you were really doing is just trying to increase the difficulty factor.

Surprisingly so! The end inch of my left middle finger was successfully reattached after being nearly completely severed (was still only connected by a small piece of skin) after been slammed in a car door at a very young age! Fingernail still sits a little different and the circular scar still visible all these years later.
