Did a crit this evening. There was no Master's race so I did the Cat 4. (Because that's what I am). Field had about 25 and the course was in a mega church parking lot with one half open and one half twisty/turns. Two young guys went off the front the second lap and we never caught them. I won the sprint for third from a group of around 10. Won some $ for the Racing Retirement Party Fund.

AJ, nice job. Just wish that I had something with which to start a fund. Can't buy beer with the medals and ribbons I get.

After my Tuesday evening blow up (after chasing a break) I sat out Wednesday for a variety of less than good reasons. Tempo on the TT bike last night felt pretty good.

Saturday race got cancelled so I'll probably try three on Sunday.

Sorry you didn't make it, Cleave. Great event, as always. Glad they are moving in the sanctioned direction. Chris said he thinks they will all be sanctioned from now on. They can't really make it work economically unless they get a title sponsor, so if LV has some budget to spare...

Omniums on Wed and Fri were a lot of fun. But that means this week has been 3 very short, very intense workouts. I think I'll find a tempo ride for tomorrow.

3:53 at endurance pace, with a 41 minute low-to-mid Z4 interval in there, plus three 3x45" one-legged drills. TSS 241, IF .79, 2372 kj.

Two lane highway, no paved shoulder, and some nitwit in a Suburban had to pass a line of traffic coming in my direction. I pulled off onto the gravel shoulder and kept going, remembering the old traffic equation: mass x velocity = right of way. I guess the four-leaf clover on my FdJ jersey brought me some luck.

Looks like everyone else is either racing or traipsing around France this weekend.

3:27 at endurance pace. The high (for me) volume this week, 15:29, caught up with me and whacked me upside the head this morning. I did my doughnut run this morning, 30 miles to the doughnut shop, 30 miles back...had two chocolate-covered doughnuts, thank you very much, washed down with a pint of OJ. The ride up there went pretty well, the ride back, not so much; that's when the fatigue hit me. The ride back took six minutes longer, partly due to a light headwind in the last 14 miles. Yesterday I was tired, but about the right amount based on the work I had done; today, I was whupped, felt much more tired than yesterday. hrTSS 177, IF .67.

90' of z2/3. First ride of more than an hour in a week, and my legs are really feeling it this evening.

Went to Indy on Fruday for some velodrome time then did the TT's on Saturday. A 85 yr old was there to do the events. The guy looks like the most fit 70 yr I have ever seen. He did not disappoint when he broke 3' in the 2K pursuit.

Is that a rhetorical question?

You can see the equivalent steps per minute for carrying firewood on this chart:

http://www.10k-steps.com/content/pedometer.aspx?owt=1

Now you just need a steps/min to TSS converter.

Adaption drills and criss-cross this morning, followed by a LONG Fred Ride. Tired! Coach said this would be a tough week, and I've made it a little tougher. How does that commercial go - "wring it out, get empty"? I get it!

Kind of unstructured this week. We're going on vacation at the end of the week and I'll be off the bike for two weeks. Decided to do an Hour of Power workout today and was pleasantly surprised. 109tss in 1:09 total. I was drilling it. Why does it seem like I always have good legs when I'm training by myself?

Rest day yesterday. 2:32 at endurance pace today, with 5x6' climbing repeat intervals (high Z4), each starting with an eight second stomp, six minutes RBI. I apparently really needed the rest day yesterday; today's workout was no problem - actually called for four intervals, I felt good enough to do five. TSS 167, IF .81, 1452 kj.

Fast thirty miles with some of our juniors today. They were nice enough to wait for me on the hills, so I did more than my share of pulling on the flat stretches.

2:07 at endurance pace. Wish the humidity would lighten up a bit, but that's unlikely to happen, just have to live with dripping jerseys for a couple more months. TSS 126, IF .77, 1262 kj.

Off day today. Pace yesterday, but it was short due to tired legs. Coach said we were going to go tough this week, and we have. Tomorrow are more hard intervals. Believe it or not, I'm smiling about that!

My coach switched my schedule around today - rest day tomorrow, then two consecutive days of hard intervals, followed by a three hour endurance ride Sunday. I'm liking the hard stuff too. Don't know if it's the endorphin rush, or just knowing I can do this when so many other guys my age get out of breath walking to the fridge for another beer.

I'd go with the latter!!! It's a great feeling, isn't it Chuck? I never want to loose it. I am absolutely excited about next year, all ready. Ex has me way above where I was when I started this season. Next year will be fun!

Mrs. Ex was told "we usually don't do surgery on this with people your age". She's a half decade my junior. She rolled off all the sports we do and the surgeon went "well let's get you fixed up then".

Not sure what I would have said to the surgeon, but my inside voice would have used bad words. Hope that everything worked out well.

You're challenging all my prejudices about American medicine, Ex. It used to be the case that American surgeons would intervene at the drop of a hat.

As for the ageist thing, that is ridiculous. It's the sort of thing one would think about for an 80 year-old...

Hoping the surgery and recovery will go well for your wife. My orthopedic surgeon and I had a similar conversation prior to my ankle fusion.

Mrs. Ex was kind of appalled. The doc was being pretty straightforward, unless you are active doing another ACL replacement would be uneccessary, and apparently a lot of people pass on the surgery and a fairly long rehab.

Waiting on a surgery date. She wants to sneak in a vacation beforehand. My race season is winding down as a result. With no trip to the Midwest I'm sort of floating in limbo.

Trying to decide if I want to hang here and pass on the stage race up in Reno this weekend. Got a big climbing race a couple of hours away on Saturday and a couple of crits where I could go help teammates on Sunday.
