I think I'm going to schedule my exam a few days before my 50th... talk her into giving me another year before going down that road... so to speak.

Hermes: Sara, I assume by your stated disappointment in your test that the measured power was below your expectations. Power training is a construct. It is designed to allow you to measure power and set power zones that are relevant to you. Your power numbers are yours. What other women produce is not that relevant and may or may not be indicative of race performance and certainly not of self worth.

Since this is your test and your show, you get to have do overs. Yep. If you are not happy with a result, do it over. We do not have do overs in races or actual tests in school. Use the data that your have and set power zones. The worst outcome is that they are set too low (assumes you were off on the day of the test). When you retest, you can set the power zones to new values.

There is nothing magical about FTP. What is so important about the most power one can produce in one hour? Why not 45 minutes? Well, a good time in a 40K time trial is one hour and one should have exhausted all ones energy. So one hour seems about right. I know a lot of very good racers who have low FTPs and are great crit racers.

What is more important is to relax, focus and free your mind. Believe in yourself. I do not see a failed test. I see an athlete that purchased a power meter and is going the extra mile to learn how to use it and improve fitness and discover strengths and limiters.

Power training always reminds me of Neo and Morpheus in the Matrix Simulator. Free your mind
    .

I'm understanding it now, Hermes. The Matrix is a great metaphor, by the way. My mind has been a mess around cycling, as of late. I assumed I'd lost something with the surgery, and I've struggling mightily to get back - what? You are all seeing a totally inexperienced athlete trying hard to prove her worth as she tries to understand the sport. The two can be a lethal mix. Yes, I need to let it all go and just have fun. It's interesting how I keep coming back to "having fun". I get it, really, I do.

Srals, there is nothing to prove to anyone except to yourself. You have already proven much. You had a setback, and now you need to prove to yourself that you can get back to where you were. Don't worry about getting ahead, that comes later. Get the base back first, and do it right, don't rush yourself. Ex is just trying to get a number so he can help you do just that. I suspect that anything reasonably accurate will do to start.

I think I've told you this before. One of the hardest things to learn in this stupid sport is patience. Think of this period in your training as if you were riding in the first ten laps of a crit. You're sitting back, working, staying in the group, watching the breaks go and come back, waiting to pounce. Your time will come.

I did some practice TT turns this morning, with the rest of the hour ride at an easy, fast cadence, pace.

I head over to Vegas tomorrow morning. The prep Ex has had me do for the TT's, particularly the 5K, has been an education on what it means to focus on an event. I've done a lot of work in the needed power range, and for the required duration. I've gotten to know my TT bike really well. Well enough that there are a couple of tweaks I think would be good, but I'm holding off on those until after this weekend. I'm glad the 5K is the first event of the weekend, Saturday morning, and I'm guessing that is one of the reasons Ex has had me focus on that race.

I'm saving my opener for when I get there tomorrow, so I can reconoiter while getting the driving kinks out. I'll be hitting the starting line for the 5K prepped, confident, and ready to really drill it.

AzTR and Racer Ex, have fun in Vegas and don't demoralize your competition too much. I'm sure Ex will be extra footloose as he has already qualified for the national games.
    Thanks.

Sara, I see many athletes of our generation over-thinking their fitness and training. I think you have it right with the understanding that fun is key. None of us has a pro contract in our futures and we're lucky if the prize money covers our entry fee. Of course, the aspects of the sport that create fun is different for each of us and competition can definitely be one of those aspects. Two of my major reasons for racing is meeting new and similarly minded people and friendships gained through this sport. I'm definitely not in it for the glory.
    Thanks.

Hey! Stop bursting our bubbles, Cleave. I was about to send my palmiers to Vaughters.

Ex, I'll meet you at the hotel, and we can head up to the venue...

And thanks, folks, for the confidence in me you are expressing. Believe me, I'll do my best to live up to it... I'll be envisioning the Ohio party invitation dangling in front of me like the proverbial carrot.

Thank you, Cleave. It is fun, and I've found out the hard way. Did you say something about "prize money"? Oh, I can win back my entry? No, I'll let someone else win theirs and mine back I don't think I'll ever have to worry about that. I fell in love with the sport because of the people. I can be naive when it comes to being a judge of a person, but I haven't been far off with the folks I've met in and around cycling. The ratio of genuine to poser is much higher in this discipline than others I've been exposed to. Then there is the openness, the willingness to help, the sport for the pure "sport of it". It's all such good stuff. Oh please, I don't ever want to loose sight of that! And I almost did.

This Saturday starts the Low Key Hill Climb Series http://lowkeyhillclimbs.com/2012/. This is a perfect event for new racers with a power meter looking to build and check FTP power. Although some coaches are party poopers and do not like their athletes doing HC races in the fall. I am not sure if we will do any due to schedule and location. Some years have climbs that are in closer proximity to our house.

OK, 108 miles over the last two weeks with 65 of those on my road bike. I guess I'm done resting. Will start out slowly this week working on base.

Cleave, please tire VanceMac out for me. He'll be joining my team's ride this Sat, and I don't want him to make us look so bad we have to post that "Stuff Cyclists Say" video: "Yeah, it's a recovery day for me..."

Actually, we'll all be saying "Hey, we have Tour de Scottsdale tomorrow!" as we go slowly up 9-Mile hill. Then we'll argue about whether that's a race or not.
