2:27 at endurance pace this afternoon/evening, with 4x10" stomps. Still using HR; interesting to see my HR rise 18-26 bpm from a ten second effort before it comes back down.

Climbing repeats tomorrow, probably in the rain. Thankfully it'll be in the 60s tomorrow morning.

Hi, the last three weeks of January sucked. After a great base period I got sick and then spent a week working in Mesa, AZ. Between the stress of work and continuing to recover from the flu, something went funny in my left leg. It manifested itself as some acute pain just above my glute and ended in my calf. I couldn't stand still and sometimes walking was extremely painful too. Saw my chiropractor today (he normally doesn't work on Saturday) and he thinks that the main problem is an extremely tight IT band. Went for an easy ride today and the leg felt fine. This evening it is much better than during the week. Still not normal but no acute pain.

Will try a long ride tomorrow with some hills. Was going to go to the velodrome to do some volunteer work during the time trials but I don't want to push things by standing for long periods of time.

I'm flying semi-blind right now without a power meter. I'm going on RPE, but I'm pretty confident that I'm in the right range for pace ride I was supposed to be doing yesterday. Heart rate tracked nicely, although the efforts may have been a little higher than the schedule called for. All done on the trainer.

Did my "climbing" ride yesterday. I made up a loop in a relatively hilly part of Louisiana about 65 miles north of where I live that's about 33 miles long with about 1600 feet of climbing, with a 4% climb for about two miles with a short descent in the middle and a bunch of shorter, steeper climbs. The plan was to do two laps, with five repeats of the long climb on the second lap.

The first lap went okay. It took about two hours without pushing it, and the intermittent rain started at about the 1:30 point. The wind was predicted to shift from south to north in early afternoon, and it shifted about four hours early. The long climb was 70 degrees on the first lap, 55 and getting lower on the second. I was supposed to do the climbs in my "climbing repeat" HR range, just over threshold. I know what that feels like by RPE; it took the entire ascent to get into that range on the first three repeats, and I didn't quite make it on the last two. I may have been too tired to push hard enough on the last two. Instead of completing the second lap, I turned around and headed back to the truck because I was cold and wet - it rained and blew pretty hard during the repeats. I was cold enough I couldn't exert enough pressure with my fingers to downshift, had to use my palm. It took me about 20 minutes to change out of my kit when I got back to the truck...most of that time was trying to take off wet gloves with non-functioning fingers.

Ended up with 1300 feet of climbing for the repeats, total of 3100 for the entire ride, hrTSS of 275, 4:25 ride time. Stayed in the small (39t) ring the entire time, hit 33.4 mph@132 rpm in the 39-12. I didn't want to get out of bed this morning!

Yesterday did some recovery group riding outside in the balmy 40 degree weather.
TSS for the week was 640 with a TRIMP of 1051

Today is an off day so I get to spend it doing gym work; core and back while shoveling the 8" of white sunshine that fell today

I need to get a Buff neck warmer...

I did sprint intervals in 36 degree wet conditions yesterday morning. The programed ride was for 50 minutes, I could only do 30 minutes because I got so cold! My face froze and my fingers stopped working - I couldn't shift! I hurt so much by the time I got back to my car that I was almost sick. I did manage to get all of the intervals in, though.

Dry cold is one thing - a damp cold, when you're not used to it, is brutal! I don't know how you east coast people do it...

Rushed home from work yesterday in order to get my intervals in before the next snow storm. Got ready and out on the road with the fixie at 4:40 PM and rode 30 minutes to meet up with a team mate to do some hill intervals. The workout was 30 minute WU, then 4 x 8’ Z4 hill intervals in a 62” gear with a 10 second OTS attack every 2" during the interval. On the third interval it started to snow and by end of the 4th effort both Bob and I were getting snow covered as darkness took hold. Riding back down the hills after the interval with the fixie was not easy when my body wanted to rest the legs. The 30 minute ride back home in the dark and snow covered roads was sort of fun until my Magic Shine battery pack came loose and tangled into the front wheel. The light survived intact but the wheel is toasted as a spoke pulled through the rim. Unfortunately it was one of my track wheels that I had mounted a commuter tire on for inclement days. I was too lazy and rushed to take the road tire off the cheap fixie wheel.

I've got the missus looking for a place in the Carolinas or Georgia. I'm sick of this weather. I want to fish or ski I can get on a plane to get to ice/snow

I had a totally fubar workout today. It was intended to be 3 x 5' flat out efforts on the TT bike, after a race-day-style warmup. But (a) I had mechanical issues with the bike, including a dropped chain, (b) I have my first saddle sore in forever (the sub-cutaneous lump kind, not the irritated skin kind), and (c) my route just does NOT work for hard efforts. Especially during "clean up the canal season". Trucks in tunnels! Work schedule has me trying to use it anyway, as the good spot is a half hour drive each way. Add to the mix the fact that I totally suck at TT efforts, and well... I let the excuses overwhelm me. NOT a HTFU effort. Not happy with myself.

I have GOT to either find a better training route that's close, or move closer to one. I actually think I've found a crit-course type route that I might be able to take full bore. It's the perimeter of a church parking lot, though, and I'm guessing they have semi-valid reasons to not want me racing through the lot and behind the church, dodging speed bumps, gardeners, pastors, and security dudes. Gonna try it, and if they chase me, offer to sign a release, or even pay them a monthly fee. I'm desperate.

I know the feeling going into hard workouts when things go South. On those days I do a mock first interval at around 90% then convince myself the rest is doable. I do Crit intervals and short group races in a local graveyard.

I did another cold (for me cold - 37 damp degrees) ride this morning, programmed for an hour at pace (RPE, PT wheel is not back from CycleOps yet). I managed 40 minutes! My body works so hard at those temperatures to stay warm that I really can't get into the effort. Average speed was high, though, so I must have been doing something! It took my hands twenty minutes to stop hurting after the ride. The good part? The balaclava I bought last night worked beautifully - it warms up nicely and kept my face comfortable.

"Significant" rain is forecast for Napa (Northern California) for Saturday and Sunday. Ex and I exchanged notes about my crit on Sunday vis a vis the weather. I feel as he does - it's too early in the season to risk a crash on a wet course. I'll go to the race, but if it's bad conditions, I will not chance riding. I know, HTFU! But - not yet, the season hasn't really even started yet.

I've "donated" my race entry twice in the past 10 years because I don't do criteriums in the rain any longer regardless of where we are in the season. Depends on the course for a road race. Don't know if you remember, but at the Poor College Kids Road Race last year, the road was still pretty wet for the first lap of the 55+/60+ race. Might as well have been raining. If I were facing a road course with a fast, technical downhill, I would have passed.

Of course, YMMV.

I've usually done well racing in the rain. I don't trust the tubulars so I race the GP4000s.
