Average temperature at Hellyer Velodrome this afternoon during the workout was 99 degree with a 111 max.

No, the chain wrapped around the rear cog and axel and I rolled into the apron fishtailing. I headed toward the grass but stopped before I got there. The chain chewed up the inside of the frame a little but everything else is okay.

Good, you don't need a crap-tasthrophe right before Nat's. A couple winters ago I was sprinting on my fixie up a steep little roller when I unclipped and tumbled up the hill with one foot still attached to the bike. My shoulder and hip hurt for weeks.

Hermes, glad you're okay!

Rest week. Day off Monday, recovery ride Tuesday, an hour plus at high Z3 yesterday, day off today, an hour plus at high Z3 with 3x5' threshold intervals tomorrow, recovery ride Saturday (!) and 2.5 hours at endurance with 3x15' SST intervals Sunday. Phone call today with coach to discuss the next month's training and other goals.

With short intervals on Tuesday and track starts tonight, yesterday was slated to be 1hr at mid-Z2. I had one of those days where everything was easy. Yep, one of Herme's "no chain days" and kept reminding myself to slow down and take it easy and follow the workout. I just wanted to keep riding and added an extra 15', then once home just noodled around on my street enjoying the combination of a man in sync with machine. Cautiously optimistic that I'll see some very good numbers on tonight's standing starts into aero sprinting.

AJ, women in sync with their machines is quite something, too. I even know a couple. :)

2 x 20 minute TT's today. This time I did them on the road bike on a long climb of around 3 to 4% grade. Nothing too serious. The first one went well, I wasn't trying to kill it, just be smooth and keep the power on. The second got choppy, especially towards the end. I was running out of gas, I think. That's the way I feel right now, out of gas!

I've been thinking quite a lot about my disagreement with the mentor in my last crit. I've talked it over with several masters women out here. I feel she was doing her job, or what she felt was her job, but she sure did distract me, and she caused me to quit the race. That's just not right. The consensus among the other racers was that she should have held her remarks until the race was over. Also, they were surprised that races were being mentored at all, and especially at this point in the season. I was worried, too, that there might be something negative with my bike handling that I don't realize. What I was doing was tailgunning, because the field was small, there weren't many surges, and I can use my momentum to either move up or stay attached. I can corner much faster than most of the Cat 4 women I've raced with (they hit their brakes....jeeeez!), and I slide up into holes in the peloton - assertively. I might change my line a little in a corner to do that, but if there is no one around me, so what? It's a race. Right? My racer friends agree, and no one had anything to say about my bike handling.

Saw what you did there. Thanks for putting the LYC back on. Two good looking laps if you ask me, right around your number as an average. Lap 1 only thing I see is a dip in the power where the elevation may flatten out? Coach may have insight; I'm trying to learn through osmosis and advice from all ya'll fine folk. Lap 2 same thing in the middle bit but the back half of the lap looked real smooth and above your number... if I recall correctly.

I agree. A mentor *should* realize that remark may get into your head. Always after the race if you want my opinion.

I disagree too, for the record.
Either you were riding safely and she was wrong, in which case, ignore the mentor, continue your race.
Or
You were riding unsafely or unsafely with the qualification that it was because you were surrounded by folks with sub-par handling skills. In which case, listen to the advice, and implement it if possible.

Yes, it's hard to tell the difference. Err on the side of remembering this is your first (?) season racing.

Allowing yourself to get dropped is better than causing a crash. Just because you are older, slower, and a better bike handler, you are not absolved of responsibility towards riding safely around the other racers.

My coach would probably have a different take - ride your line, and let everyone else look out for themselves. But the rest of us have to go to work on Monday, take care of our pets and kids, pay our bills. Not worth crashing.

Why did you bail? Little voice in the back of your head saying she was right?

As a mentor, sometimes I get a little agitated if I repeatedly tell a rider to stop doing something or to do something differently and they argue or ignore me. As long as it's not super dangerous I figure they will eventually learn the hard way and maybe it will all sink in then. I wasn't there so I don't know how the perp I mean rider was conducting themselves. If she was tailgunning effectively I'm pretty sure that I would have recognized that and maybe even complimented her for doing it well. It's a valuable tactic to know. One thing about mentors, you have to pick the right ones, in both experience, ability, and personality. I think what makes the Bethel clinics so effective is that we all know and respect each other, and we all have the same goals. Nobody is out to impress anyone with their knowledge. Each of us always has something unique to share. We don't always agree but we always acknowledge each other's experience.

This isn't in regards to Sara, in any way, shape, or form.

valygrl, we do not need to tone it down. I believe we need to be a hell of a lot more vocal in the ****show we call Cat 4 bike racing. In my tape of the race with my wreck, I called out a teammate for scaring the hell out of me, for good reason. Not that he lost it that time, but the way he chose to take a corner, the poor line, the poor timing, everything. Middle of the race, and decides to dive a corner. Again, I am not a pro, nor do I claim to be, but getting taken out because others can't ride, tends to upset me. Of course, I take some blame for this. I know there is a problem, and being slightly above mediocre pack fodder, I didn't have the skills to keep myself out of the mix.

Please don't tone it down.
