Those wheels are really fast. Once you get used to them you'll see why. It was cool to see Vanderkitten at the races today, all on Psimets.

Isn't this time of the season great, when you can just enjoy riding?

Hell, yeah! I'm supposed to limit myself to 6-7 hours of riding this week. Weather prediction is no rain for the next ten days, temps in the 60s at sunrise with this Tuesday maybe getting down to the high 50s. Ain't no way I'm only riding 6-7 hours this week!

I've been off the bike two days in a row now. I've had to cover shifts at a base that is 45 minutes away, and there just isn't enough morning light early (like @ 5:30) to go do a recovery ride (like I was supposed to). Right now I need the rest more than a recovery ride. Work is really wearing me down. The bright side is I asked Ex if I could ride the Venge on a Fred ride tomorrow. Have to beat up on some people, don't you know!

I don't know if the use of the word is changing over time. I started hearing the term 'Fred' (and 'Freida') in SoCal in the early 1980s. Before that, on the east coast, we used the term 'squirrel' to describe recreational riders who were potentially hazardous to your health (swerving as you tried to pass, sitting on your wheel and hitting you, etc). 'Fred' was much more elitist. Basically, if you weren't a bike racer, you were a Fred. If someone did something stupid during a race (highly a matter of opinion), you got called a Fred. Added to that was if someone wore the wrong kind of clothing while cycling, such as long white socks or gym shorts, you were a Fred.

I didn't know that racers around the country used 'Fred' but it doesn't surprise me. Interestingly, I hear it used less in my circles of cycling friends these days.

I only use the word on occasion under duress -- peer pressure. So much for my integrity. Basically, I'm not in favor of the term. If you're riding a bicycle and doing it safely and sanely, then you're good in my book.

Being relatively new to the cycling scene, and even newer to racing, I am not well versed in cycling lexicon. Every time I heard or read the term "Fred" (or "Doris") it was in a light hearted way, and I came to understand that it was a term applied to non-racers. Nothing derogatory, at all. I was quite pleased and proud to be a Doris or Fred, and I do wear white gym socks when the weather gets cold. I am not one to offend, if someone has an issue with a term, then I choose not to use it.

I *do* think of the term as derogatory. I think that the standard usage is derogatory. So I was feeling like that was what all y'all were meaning. But I seem to have misunderstood that... so carry on!

My perspective is, I've been so very happy the last two weeks, with no training plan and free rain to ride as long as I want on the weekends, riding many hours at no particular speed, with a dozen stops to take pictures of leaves and buy unhealthy yummy snacks at gas stations along the way, instead of riding for exactly x hours at y watts... I love these rides that peole are referring to as "fred" rides and don't want to put them down with a term that to me seems like... well... a put-down. Or maybe I just have to put on my off-season Doris hat, dig my SPD Sandals out of the the (figurative and literal) closet, and go for a ride.

Internet communication is tricky - it lacks personal nuance.

Peace.

Like Sara I'm new to the game and thought, which usually gets me in trouble, is that the term was used to say that no particular plan was used for a ride it was 'just riding to ride' or 'whatevering'.

Having looked on the Al Gore invented interwebs however leads me to believe the term can in fact be derogatory if taken that way. I'll cease.

Linky things

I also know the joys of riding around and not looking at watts/HR/time. The evening into night group rides I host and send out invites are not "Fred rides" but are not club rides either. In reality it is where the non-racers get to pull the racers around all evening until the hills or finish sign.

Took Friday off, rode 40 miles of W PA hills on Sat, and went fishing yesterday and today. I'm well rested up for tomorrow's evening into night ride.

I have clearance from Ex to take the Venge out tomorrow for our first "hard" ride. I'm going to do as AJ said, let the group pull me around. And then, wellllll....

It's kind of like an old worn out joke that has become a parody of itself. I mean no disrespect. Some of the best riding friends I have do not race nor do they own expensive bikes. I do understand that some people that are a bit too full of themselves use the term in an elitist way. I don't mean it that way, but you wouldn't know from reading it on a screen. I love Fred season. I just wish this year I had a complete race season. Fred season is a lot more fun after that.

Fall is "Fred" season down here due to the weather. Centuries abound. Our team makes a point of doing the local charity rides in team kit to show our support...and eat cookies. The cycling community where I live is small enough that the racers and non-racers know each other anyway, and we get along famously.

Heading home tomorrow after 8 days of cycling. Stats: 20 hours 15 minutes, 280 miles, 15,200 feet of climbing, 8898 Kj and TSS 1020 plus 8 bottles of wine and all the gels we brought from home.

Our ride today was a loop around the southern part of the island. We went for miles flat to rolling terrain on close to perfect roads without having to stop - a time triailist paradise. We found a spot to take a couple of pics of shoreline. Pics by me. Do not get vertigo...this is as close to the edge as I could dare go. I am sure CA would want to put up rails and keep people back.

Thunderstorms over the mountains on the western coast and an idea how high I was above the water.

Recovery ride, with u-turn practice. 54 minutes. TSS - 9. Average watts: 39.

I think that's a new record.
