1 hour in the Cold Garage aboard the Look/Blackburn at 0525 this morning. I did a pace effort for 30 minutes and 3 five minute moderate power intervals, the last minute of the last one saw me elevate the power to just under 200 watts. I also did a sprint, and some high cadence drills. This followed a day off, which was a day filled with sitting around at work, trying NOT to eat the treats there (I failed), and watching the abysmal weather. I felt a little like a portly slug this morning (the scale said 139, so I AM a portly slug), but I did finally shake the cobwebs out and move a little.

90 minutes recovery on the road on the new Felt. It is hard to believe that this was only the third road ride on it. This bike is stupid fast.

Today I broke the news to the club that I will not be racing for them next year. They took it well. I will still be a member, will still ride with them, and will still volunteer my time for club events. I just will not race in the club jersey and will not take any sponsorship money. Still, it was hard for me.

I woke up to rain and fog. After a relaxed morning, the weather turned perfect and I got in about an hour along the coast.

Sunshine, high 50's. Bike clean, lubed, and working like a swiss watch. Brilliant workout assigned by Ex that really pushed me. Wonderful ride... wonderful day.

So far, the escape from NorCal to SoCal has worked. Another great day and ride from San Clemente through Camp Pendleton ~ 2:20. We stopped at a shopping center at the end of the camp near Oceanside. The Panda Inn Express was providing free food and drink. Needless to say it was a busy place.

Merry Christmas to all.

Good call Hermes... its been cold and really wet here.
First ride in 5 days for me, shaking off a tough cold.
But... forecast is for clear weather ahead, so LTHR test soon, then starting rendition 1 of TCTP (newbie century version).

First time on the bike since the 20th, due to family obligations and travel. An hour on the trainer at endurance pace, with a set of fast pedal intervals and three five minute intervals at tempo. Felt good to be back on the bike again.

ETA: AJ, I feel your pain. We're currently under a tornado watch, with high wind warnings (30+ mph) until morning. Going to warm up to 50 tomorrow...and this is Louisiana, dammit!

Louisiana - as I remember winters down there (I flew in the Gulf for 23 years), it was a series of about four cold fronts, at least two being Blue Northers. The wind blew constantly from the end of October to the end of March, it just changed directions.

AJ, that sounds like perfect Cross conditions!

AJ, we are getting the same storm, but less snow and more ice. Ice storms are the worst around here. They can take power out for days. Hopefully not.

I did do training class this morning. Whew...

All the crap and sugar I've been eating the last couple of days REALLY told on me. It is just freaking amazing how bad a bad diet can make you feel!

Anyway, I did one hour of spin class, Kadria was brutal this morning (she wanted to work the toxins out of those of us dumb enough to show up for class) - three sets of eight each 20 second on/10 second off intervals. Lots of friction, two sets OTS and one on. Ow. And dizzy!

I did 40 minutes of strength on my own afterwards, there was no formal class today. When I got home I had two poached eggs and grapefruit juice. Let the purge begin!

The weather here really sucks today, by the way.

Sucks here too. In the last four days we've had over 10 inches of rain. Power was out most of the weekend and the roads are covered with mud rocks and power lines.

Eric, I've been watching the news. By the way, you're behind that two story house in the photo. I see it's still raining there!

1:10 in Hell's garage, 4 OTS intervals, at 15, 30, 45, and 60 minutes, 1, 2, 3, and 4 minutes long.
Good news, Hell's garage is getting an upgrade: new door with windows... Will that make it Purgatories' garage?

Rode strong tonight, but not particularly smart. Wasn't well placed when 5 to go was announced, and as I moved up, it took me too long to realize a guy who is normally one of the workhorses up front was actually blocking. Bastard. So the 3 guys OTF stretched it out, and when I finally tried to bridge, I couldn't get there. I faded a bit and finished towards the back of the splintering pack.

Then I cooled down for a few laps, coughed up some lung parts, puked a little, and drove home.

Things are heating up, and there is some teamwork starting to happen which is hard to sort out because the 'teams' are either unofficial, or people don't yet have their kits for the coming season. I tried to follow a Cat1 guy known for his breaks a couple of times, but couldn't match his accelerations and ended up in no man's land or leading the chase. I never made it off the front. The pace was enough it was hard to even grab a drink of water. Averaged right at my FTP, with NP ~40w above that. Fun stuff.

It was wet and raining when I got up this AM. By 10 AM, it was clear and sunny but the wind picked up and there was whitecaps on the ocean. We started out the day shopping the after Christmas sales in OC and LA. We ended up at the track in the late afternoon for a workout. It was an open session so MEA and I worked out together. One guy managed to crash all by himself by sliding down the track. That happens when the speed is too low or improper tire selection or preparation.

Picking when to push, and when not to, remains somewhat hit-or-miss for me. I'm recovering a whole lot quicker this year, but I will find myself in that recovery period when a threatening break goes, and I'm unable to respond properly. But that's pretty much the point, huh? Then there is the futility factor of chasing one of our top Cat1's. Goal last night was to attack and bridge, so I gave it a go with him. But on his first attack, I maxed my HR (highest was 2 bpm more than past max), hit 970w, and was still dropped. The dude has an extra gear, and I got the impression he was playing with us, and could have stayed away if he chose to, but chose instead to coach a teammate and practice repeated attacks. I saw him send the teammate after a break, when the guy had just been reeled in. I could see the "WTF" hesitation from the guy, but then he gave it a go, ending up in no-man's land.

First official race is the 19th, on the same course. 50+ is at 2:20, and I'm deciding whether to add a Cat4 race at 8:40, which leaves a huge gap, or a 2-3-4 which immediately precedes the 50+.

Dude, you're over 50, right? Young Cat1's not only have an extra gear, they have a few extra cylinders. Going mano-y-mano with them is definitely an exercise in futility, so don't even try. Realize that you have one or two good solid efforts at their level in any race, and use them wisely. I have been able to lap the field with P/1/2 riders, but only because I didn't crush myself to try and join the break. You have to know when to shut it down and let them ride away, unless of course, it is a training race and your objective is to beat yourself into oblivion. If so, then don't beat yourself up that you aren't at that level. Be happy that you were able to hang as long as you were able to.

I would do the back-to-back unless the M50+ is an important race. Use the 2-3-4 as a warmup. Don't make any great efforts unless they are worthwhile, and if you do, limit them to one or two.

My two cents.
