Nearly the same as my wife's comments.

AJ, heal up well. This is yet another example of why I don't ride mountain bikes any longer. It seems like every ride I did, someone crashed in a way that hurt them to some degree (and sometimes that was me). Pavement is much kinder to me.

AJ, I sympathise. Personally I can't go near a mountain bike without crashing, they're the Devil's work.

The heat is kicking my butt. 18 miles on the way to work felt like 80. Between the heat, bad luck with traffic lights, and just feeling 'bleh', I didn't finish an assigned interval for the first time in, like, forever. I was halfway into the second of a 2x10 @ 105% of FTP when I hit another red light and just packed it in. Finding enough open road to go for 10' above FTP, on a TT bike, and still head in the general direction of work is, well, frustrating.

Track workout this AM. It was another beautiful morning. We are getting some warm weather. There was a young women, who is a pro rider from Sidney, that joined us to practice team pursuit with MEA and another women. She grew up 10 minutes from the indoor 250 meter track and starting riding track as a kid. Everything she does on the track is poetry in motion.

The Petaluma Crit this weekend has been cancelled due to low turnout. I guess now it's back to "training mode" for me. It's too late to find another race (Dunnigan Hills would have been nice), so I'll put the PT on the bike and do a hard ride on Saturday to get familiar with the PT and to shed some of the "race energy". I can't find any other races any time soon that jive with my schedule of life events. I'll keep my eyes open, I need to race!

Hand is a little tweaked but OK this morning. Otherwise my landing left me no worse for wear. Started packing for tomorrow's 84 mile road race. Temps by time we finish will be pushing 100, with a predicted high of 104. 83 already up here. Going to head out and do my opener now.

Did the Underground Crit tonight, handling it more like a training ride than a race. I did my best to stay attached using as little power as possible, and did a much better job of it this week. I closed one gap, into the wind on the back stretch, keeping my power ~200. I didn't think that was possible, but I did it by paying attention way ahead, and seeing that the pack would bunch up at the next corner. I joined right as they hit the corner, and moved right up to mid-pack in the turn without having to 'dial it up to 400'. Sweet. Another time, I closed the usual back stretch gap by following a teammate's suggestion and just waiting for someone to come by, then using him to break the wind and close it up. That worked also. But the tactic is risky for me, especially when there are a few fast guys in the pack, as I'm often back further than I like to be. Mr. Freaky fast was there playing with us, and he chose to push things when I was in an awkward spot, behind the wrong guys, and I missed the split as the pack disintegrated, finishing a lap down. I could have buried myself to bridge, but chose not to, because I'm a wuss who can't HTFU. But there was some great learning, and it was a good 'get reacquainted' ride on the road bike: hadn't been on it in over 2 weeks!

I warmed up doing the second half of the B race, hanging in the pack.

My assignment was to have fun, and I did.

Did a quick spread sheet comparison from last year's prep for Nationals and it looks like I'm pretty close to where I was at the same time. On a plus note I'll have more time training at altitude and a bit more speed training in the legs so I actually might be a little better prepared. Last year resulted in a silver medal in the TT so this is encouraging.

Did TTT intervals in the midst of a 1 hour commute at 'pace'. More pace work on the way home.

My first event, the tandem TT, is on the 5th. Road race the following morning on the 6th, then my crit is right behind Shovel's on the 8th.

Both my parents were born on 6th September. Same year, too, she was two hours older than him. Too late to make them a present of a road race, but win it anyway.
