Just got whacked. 4 weeks severance. Consulting agreement for 20 hours/wk. There is work but it is a drive. C'est la vie.

Drag, Shovel. With the cost of benefits, seeing a lot of companies try to tighten up that way (convert full-timers to consulting, one way or another).

Bummer. I'm only getting two weeks severance. When you live in BFL, any job requires a good drive. At least there's work!

Sucks.

But on the bright side you have an extra 20 hours to train.

Yes massah.

Sorry for putting it in this thread. I'm just a little bit rattled.

Thanks for all the kind words.

It's rattling, no matter how prepared for it you are. I've tried to look at what has happened where I am as an opportunity. That has helped, but I still have my really pissed off moments, usually when on a call will someone who could only really be classified as idiotic, but who is keeping his job.

Feel free to vent, Shovel.

I totally get that, Shovel, but still, when the shoe fits and all that. It took me a little while to understand the "hey, I can do more than what the TRS says" mentality was detrimental. Always trying to prove something, me. However, I DO understand it now, and I'm a firm believer in doing what the coach says and no more. It DOES work.

shovelhd, sorry to hear about your job situation. It's one of those when it rains, it pours kind of deals for you with the hurricane, your crash, and now this. Certainly, one's job situation affects their training so I think you posted this in the right place. You can always drive part of the way and ride the rest to your next gig.

revchuck, so you found something new already? If so, good news!

I have a feeling Shovel will find something pretty quickly, too, Cleave. I'm certainly happy for Chuck!

I did Ex's 1.5 hour of pace and X4 (interval) drill today. That made for a 25 mile HARD ride. I'm just hammered! Decent numbers, though. I just hope I didn't dig into next week's match book - but I'm positive Ex wouldn't let me do that, so I'm just worrying needlessly!

TSS 128.4, IF 0.879, NP 148 (intended), Max Q 624, 15.2 MPH avg for 25.25 miles (damn those stoplights!).

Hang in there, Shovel.

Pretty pleased with this morning's numbers. Two for two this week on hitting all the targets.

Plenty of time between now and Tuesday.

TallWife and I are 'debating' how my time off from the delay of the new job should be used: work on the bathroom remodel that never ends, or the Pasadena games, in Long Beach (did I get that right?!?!?).

Long Beach. Correct. Are you staying where you stayed in February?

I just wanted to make sure that one of my competitors didn't end up at the wrong venue on race day.

Local TT practice tonight. My official time was 25:31 -- certainly not my fastest time, but OK considering I was trying a new strategy. Ended up hammered but not as bad as the last one, wherein I coughed up a lung shortly after crossing the finish line.

Chatted with Rumbutter and Brit Power there as well, and we discussed putting together a tandem ride. It'll probably have to wait until fall, as their race calendars are chock-full.

I'm looking forward to actually racing, one of these days.

It's certainly disconcerting, no matter how it happens. My whole office got the axe. We're the SMEs on a specific area, but we're an outstation, and the prime contractor apparently considered us and the other outstations to be low-hanging fruit when faced with a mandatory 40% workforce reduction. Job performance was irrelevant.

Three of us losing jobs within a few weeks time. This well and truly sucks.

Cleave - no luck on me finding another job yet, though not for lack of trying.

Bringing this back to training, my coach wanted to have me back off a bit on intensity after my next race and switch to longer rides for a while. That part works out.

Good luck, revchuck. We will get through this.

If I catch a break, this could turn out to be a bonanza. I'm due for a break.

I'm not mad at anyone. I give this company six months, and I'm being very generous. Before this action, the money would have run out in July. This action extends it to September. They have no IT (me), no sales force, no marketing staff, and no potential sales in the hopper. There's talk about a merger with another small company, but who has the upper hand in that deal? Hey, I was employee #5. It was a good ride. I have excellent re-hire status and can get good references from the CEO and Exec VP's. I had hoped to end my career here, but it's time to move on.

One thing surprised me. I was told over and over again how professionally I handled this. I just don't get it. What was I suppose to do, go postal? What good would getting upset have done? How could I get upset when I saw the writing on the wall months ago but decided to ride it out until the end? I knew the risk and accepted it.

Yeah, we will. We've got a better perspective than younger folks, mainly because we've been through this before.

Our office went out for an "off-site business meeting" at Gordon Biersch yesterday afternoon. I ate and drank way more than I should have - imagine that! Had to force myself out the door afterwards to do openers for the practice race this afternoon. Scheduled for 1:30, did 1:09, 4x20" VO2 max intervals interspersed with 3x3' LT+ intervals, TSS 75, IF .81. I didn't eat supper afterwards, still too full from lunch.

You guys have great attitudes. To me loosing work would be devastating. In my career, at my age (and I hate to say it, but gender) it's really tough to find another position, unless you go for the bottom and loose your ass. However, I suppose that's better than nothing. Really, all I want to do is retire. Five to six more years and I can. Unless I find a Sugar Daddy. Ummm??

RR, GOOD to have you back!! Stay on that bike. Think Dunnigan Hills!!

I've done the small startup thing most of my working life, Shovel. It's worth a roll of the dice. I'm far more comfortable with "can we make this business work" than being subject to the decisions of those running a large entity. So in that respect it's the similar in that I knew the risks of working for a large and historically unsuccessful company. Now at least the company I'm moving to has been successful.
