10 hour airplane interval later today. Rode the Olympic Velodrome yesterday. Did a couple of flying 200's that left me cooked, did not bring my inhaler and wasn't coming back well. Pictures and longer report to follow.

Very low mileage week this week, courtesy of a four-day trip to London, birthday celebrations (another birthday - damn) and general excess. I'll just have to pretend this was a recovery week. We old guys need plenty of rest, right? Decent ride scheduled for tomorrow.

Openers on the Fiesta Island TT course. First ride with the (very unflattering) skin suit. I forgot to put my HRM strap on, so I had to wriggle in and out of that thing twice. Ride went well, feeling pretty good on the bike right now.
Registration closed last night & my division is the largest women's division, there's 7 women in it. Many times there's just two or three women in this field. Two of the names on the registration list I recognized immediately, they are: (1.) The woman who for around a year wins this TT any time she shows up, times usually between 30 and 31 min and (2.) The woman who has won the SoCal TT series for the past 3 years, I can't find any Fiesta Island times for her, but she's finished another TT in the series, a hilly but shorter one (11 mi) in 27 min and change. No idea who the four others are.
My best time from last week was around 33:40. So I figure to be competitive for the win, I need to lop 2:30 off my time from last week. I have an aero helmet and the skinsuit now that I didn't have last week, might buy me 30 seconds (I know in theory more, but I think that would apply more to people faster than I).
Speed-wise, I'll need to go from 22 mph to 24+ mph. I figure I'll be getting around 0.1-0.2 mph for free from the helmet and skinsuit, but Im on my own to come up with the remaining 1.8-2 mph. I'm not sure what kind of power increase that translates into, but I think it's more than I can actually produce right now, I think I'd need to be at 111-113% FTP. I can pretty easily do 105% FTP x 20 min and then do a second one after a 5 min rest. So I was thinking 107% FTP would be a really strong effort for me and I think that would translate into more like 23mph.
Whatever, it's interesting to ponder but I know already how I'm going to start (one watt above FTP) and then I'll just have to see how I feel and how it all unfolds from there. I'll be pretty happy if I ride good splits with steady power and beat my time from last week by more than the free 30 seconds I'm getting from equipment.

Honestly it is pretty simple: just go out & ride it right. The rest of it will shake itself out however it shakes itself out.
There is one part though that is not actually simple. Apparently I registered for the wrong group. If I want tomorrow's result to count for the SoCal TT Series (which only matters if I place 1, 2, or 3), my only option was to register for Women's 1-4. I registered for Women's 45+. Confusing, I don't have a racing license but I don't need a racing license because tomorrow's event is not USAC sanctioned anyway. The SoCal TT organizer is telling me to just ask to be moved to the Women's 1-4 group tomorrow, he says that should be no problem. Whatever. There's only one woman registered for the Women's 1-4 group, so even though it seems like that would be harder, the 45+ group actually looks tougher. I understand it now but I would have never come up with that convoluted approach on my own.
Men BTW can compete in the SoCal TT Series either by racing category or age group. There's different rules for men and women, which makes it even more confusing.

Whether it is USAC sanctioned or not, the promoter may choose to use USAC insurance. You'll know when you see the release.

I wish we had a winter TT series up here. Not that I can ride a whole series with my crazy work schedule, but it would give me some serious focus for the off season.

BTW, I would have never expected to say that a TT would be good for me. Why am I suddenly feeling the need for self-flagellation?

CX training today, first CX race on Saturday. I did two sets of race pace intervals, and two sets of easy. The whole thing, save for riding out to the circuit and back was done off road. The race pace intervals went pretty well, and I had an epiphany during one of them! I was going around a corner, discovered I was too fast, and I just laid the bike over while weighing the high side of the thing. It went around that sandy corner like it was on a rail or something. So, for the rest of the ride, I kept my body essentially upright in corners, but moved the bike around, much different than riding on the road. It worked, and I was able to corner faster and a little easier. Now, I just have to remember what I did!
Oh, I also got poison oak. There is so much of it around that it doesn't surprise me. I hope I caught the rash before it spreads. I don't do well with poison oak.

CX practice today - 20 minutes to/from Valmont Bike park, with 40 minutes of dismount/remounts, turning, pump track, and a little bonus falling-over practice. My bike is dirty now!
