An hour on the trainer last night. Some of it spent in the sticks but probably more of it on the horns. Power vs HR still sucks @chasm54

Came off today half-way through an otherwise beautiful 2'40" in thin winter sunshine. Farm traffic had spread a thin layer of mud across the road, which froze overnight and thawed to produce an almost perfectly slick surface on which I lost the front wheel in what was actually a very careful low-speed turn. Came down right on the point of my hip.

No serious damage done, though hip, thigh and forearm are going to be pretty colourful. Not as colourful as my language, though. And to look on the bright side, there doesn't seem to be any sign of osteoporosis in these old bones. I still bounce like I used to...

Always good to hear of stories like that with a better ending than it could have been. Good you're mostly OK, @chasm54.

Yikes, @chasm54. Glad to hear you'll live to ride another day.
@IBOHUNT, you'll come roaring back soon enough.

I rode in dreary 50F temps today with drizzle the whole time. It wasn't supposed to rain but started the second I stepped foot outside my door. I was not dressed for rain. Should have gone back for a jacket but I assumed it would stop. The best thing I can say about today is that the company was good.

@chasm54 - Glad to hear that it wasn't as bad as it could have been! You're lucky in that in the northern part of your island they make excellent pain killer.

They do, and I'm far too fond of it to need an excuse. Should have had my hip flask with me, it would have cushioned the blow.

"The most common osteoporosis test is dual X-ray absorptiometry -- also called DXA or DEXA. It measures people’s spine, hip, or total body bone density to help gauge fracture risk. A DEXA scan costs about $132, according to HealthcareBlueBook.com. Read more."

I know you retired folk are all about saving money, but this might be carrying it a bit far. And don't you folks have universal health care?

Anyway, heal up

Off today, did some threshold yesterday just to see what it felt like. It was a bit harder than I remember. 1:30, TSS 93, IF .79, 1003 kj.

I spoke with my coach this morning, we're going to start with SST intervals next week and go from there. Also, I'm thinking of doing a 40km TT next month, just to do it.

Got back from a ski trip at Deer Valley, UT. Photo by me.

Deer Valley Stein's Way. Yesterday, we had the 1760 vertical feet expert run to ourselves. We were the 3rd skiers down the run. Ski down and immediately go up on the high speed chair and do it again. On some runs, I would ski behind my wife and make figure eights in the snow out of her turns. Great trip.

Drove 1:45 over the mountains yesterday to ride in some warm weather. 1:00 into the ride this happened. Sat on the side of the rode for 1:45, being eaten by bugs and eating Heathpack's cookies. Then drove 1:45 home.

Seems like I should have gotten at least 1:45 worth of riding in...

Off yesterday. Spent time prepping for this weekends wrath of pushing snow. *only* 2 feet expected with 30 mph winds.
No, I don't have a fat tar bike neither.

Hard to justify the trip now that we've got 14 mountains within an hour's drive. CO might be worth the trip though. Never skied there though I actually raced a motorcycle at Aspen.

Speaking of, where are we on the CO get together?

---

Total damage from the derailleur snap was some nicked up frame bits, a hanger, and a chain. RD works fine, though has a bit of cosmetic damage. Part of the problem turned out to to be a missing "pick up" pin on the big ring.

Sitting on the trainer waiting for the new chain to arrive...

I've been heads-down in work for a while, and not keeping up here. Because, trying to wrap things up, I am now on vacation! Leave for Tucson on Monday for a week training camp with my coaching group.

Chasm - glad you are ok-ish!

Hermes - wow, that looks fun!!

Ex - Skiing in CA is better than CO. My husband says skiing in UT is better than either, and he's a really good skier. We don't get much snow - but it is cold and dry snow, anyway.

Sorry about your bike, that's sucky.

Heathpack never sends me cookies.

We are talking about CO in some thread or other. HP is going to be here week of June 19-26. I'm probably racing the first weekend, but can reserve the second weekend for riding with the BF crew, either down here or up there. Possibly traveling for work the week in between, but if I'm not could maybe carve a day out mid-week or make it a three day weekend for a ride up in the mountains. Even if I can't do all the rides I can help with planning.

With a half century skiing the Sierras and two decades skiing Utah, my take is that:

It depends. On what you ski and what you're looking for.

Year to year, day to day. Best to best resort skiing you'd be hard pressed to beat the Sierras; everything from garage sale steep chutes, powder shots in the trees, to cornice jumping to miles of moguls to long groomed drops. Back country is very accessible and kinda endless. Worst day you're skiing in cement and can't see in front of you or get buried in an avalanche. Which is why it's nice to see the mountain from your window.

Huge and diverse and subject to local knowledge. I'm still finding lines.

If they were actors the Sierras would be Al Pacino and Utah would be Gene Hackman. Both can win Oscars. Pacino can stink things up and make you regret spending the ticket money. Gene will always make you smile. Al will fry your brain when he's on.

All: OK, I'm checking on CO dates. This could be fun.

Multi-tool & link = 1:45 worth of single speed

Used to love xc, 4 hrs skating = huge aerobic workout without all of the stress being on your legs. That and being able to crush the buffet afterwards.

Haha, buried in work- that was me last weekend, if you recall. Thirteen hours of phone interviews, most of them on Friday, my day off. Why? Because I was confused and thought the meeting about the intern candidates was last Wednesday. But its this Wednesday. Doh! But everyone else was scrambling to get it done all week while I was twirling my thumbs.

I will bring cookies to Colorado. Probably. I am notoriously unreliable about these things. I actually ate @Racer Ex's Christmas cookies and had to make some more. Which is why he just got them three days ago.

I'll start a Colorado thread.
