Hi, I thought this was the off season? Good job nacler22, AJ, and VanceMac!

VanceMac, are you Cat 4 on the road and track now?

From today's Omnium. This video is from the last race, 40-lap points race (picks up with about 25 to go). The field had some firepower: 1 National champion (Ex), 1 State champion, 2 local jr studs on the fast track to pro (they ended up 1st-2nd for the omnium), and the Canadian Women's National Team. At about 4:00, one jr and 2 Canadians form a gap and work pretty well together to stay away. At around 5:30, Ex and I decide to bridge and no one else comes.

Nice job VanceMac! Ex too! Nice to watch you two catch on for the end. What place did you end up in?

We had a warm sunny day with 60 degrees temp today. They opened up the velodrome just for today and I just had to go and get some track time in even though there was no training goals. I'm in off-season until Dec. and just rode laps and some pace line.

Nice racing VanceMac and Ex. I like that size of field on the track - large enough to provide group dynamics but not as swarming as a field of 24.

Great video Vance.

Interesting day, a bit of sleep walking at times but had some good focus at others. Maiden voyage for the Dolan, all good though I need to buy a 130 stem. And I need to wear my glasses when I look at my gear chart...I'm not really "good" at 148 RPM. The high cadence work on the fixed gear I've been doing is showing up, the lack of speed work as well...I was missing snap.

Vance rode really strong and smart. Fun having an aggressive rider in there, he's going to be a pain in the rear in a good way as the season moves on.

Ex being typically humble. In the stacked field, he finished 2nd in the Miss-n-Out, an event that really favors the explosive speed of those junior champs. And then came back in next race with the legs to bridge and be in the mix at the finish of the 40-laps.

Ex is being generous with his "smart" comment... I rode aggressively, but not smart. A) After seeing the field, I took a fairly defensive approach ("I'll be happy if I can just hang on"). Always a mistake. B) I was definitely in the wind too much, as you can see in the video. You can hear Ex chirp at me after taking only half-lap pull during the bridge, but I was fried... took 1.5 laps in the wind to start the bridge, and way too many before that. C) Didn't play the omnium strategy very well... even though I managed points in 2 of the individual events, ended with zero omnium points.

re: speed work/missing snap: my workouts at Roger's sessions have been mildly helpful in this regard, but only because I'm coming from ground zero in this area. I need to figure out a way to specifically target this hole in my training.

VanceMac, All that may be true but that was a very tough Masters 3/4 field and you just upgraded to Cat 4. I do not get the Cat 3/4 part. I have seen the Canadian women race and they are really strong and capable of racing with the elite P/1/2 men. Jay W is ridiculous. Throw Ex into that mix and the field is going to be very strong.

Yeah, especially in "off season" they are going to have to combine a lot of fields. They had so many 5s (good to see) that they split the 4/5 into two fields. I have a tiny bit of regret for not doing the 4/5, since I probably would have earned some upgrade points... but I was tickled to race with the big guns.

Just what we need - a climber like Vance that has 'snap' and can sprint. Thanks, Ex!

Hi, the track race looked like fun. It's getting tempting. Because I've been doing this stupid sport for so long I'm actually a Cat 3 on the track. Go figure. Nice job VanceMac and Racer Ex!

I didn't do this Masters 55+/60+ race in Ontario, CA this past Sunday, but two of my teammates did:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NM6OV...MGNfEbu_BB2clA

The video is about 7-1/2 minutes long. The age groups race together and get scored separately. There is also separate SoCal Cup championship points for each age group.

My one teammate is on the front row, camera right at the start and you can't miss him. I think he's about as tall as AzTR. He's wearing our new kit. My other teammate ended up 10th in the 55+ and he's wearing last year's kit -- mostly dark blue with pink accents. You'll see him tail gunning throughout the video and he has a very good sprint.

Anyway, it gives a good feel for 55+/60+ crit racing in SoCal.

Thanks for the link, Cleave. How long is that course? Seems fairly long, and dead flat.

Hi, the course is in Ontario, CA. They call it the Grand Prix course: 7 corners, 1.2 miles. They say it's flat and it basically is, but when you try getting on Thurlow's wheel when he attacks coming out of turn 4, it feels like a climb.

Here's my Garmin data from the 55+ race in Feb 2012:
http://connect.garmin.com/activity/153017292

I did the 50+ and 45+ races after that. Racer Ex won the 50+ after going off the front on the first or second lap.

I was strongly considering the Cherry Pie crit up in Napa next month until I looked at the way they have the fields set up. Women, 35+ with the Cat 1/2/3. Oh, give a girl a break!

Then again, Women 4 may be the better option. It's 30 minutes as opposed to 60 minutes. That's less chances for the squirrels to take me out.

That course wasn't dead flat, at least from the camera view. No hills, though. That break looked like it had no chance but there must have been enough of them in the group to do just enough work.

Nice to see that the guy doing all the early attacking was in the group that stayed away.

That was pretty ugly and it reminded me why SoCal Cup points races in January are insane. There were two guys with World Champion stripes on their sleeves and another guy with National Champion stripes. The race was relatively sedate until we hit the lowest part of the course. Then on the quartering tailwind, false flat all heck broke loose. I was on the wheel of someone who got gapped and ended up in small group that was just off the back. The pack slowed a bit and we got back on. Got to the hill, stayed on for most of it and then fell off.

Another guy caught me and we worked together for a lap until the hill. He was much slower than I. I was kind of waiting for him to catch me but he dropped out at the end of the lap.

Rode the last lap by myself and managed to finish before the Cat 3 sprint over-ran me. I was DFL in in the 55+ field and probably DFL for the whole race.

Looking at my heart rate data, I rode hard a few times, and could have ridden harder when I got dropped. Otherwise, I just didn't go that well. Race and learn, but at the same time, it's January.

The highlight of the day was meeting sarals in-person.

Thanks for hanging around and providing support, Cleave. The 45+ did the same thing the first lap: accelerating to over 30 after the right turn out of the headwind. It had calmed down a bit though, before my crash, as folks were no doubt wanting to recover a bit for the climb. I wanted to be close to the front starting that, and in hindsight, tried to squeeze into a narrow opening too gradually at a point when we were accelerating again and I would have otherwise been forced back. Had I made my presence known more decisively, I believe all would have been fine. Totally my bad; glad I didn't take anyone down; glad I flipped to land on my back, as I believe that saved a likely collar bone break or shoulder separation. KK bunny hopped me.

Ex helped get something going before heading back to check on me (above and beyond the call!), and a break of 8 managed to get away, one of Ex's teammates included, and they stayed away to the end. Big field (65-70). Lots of strong guys. Wish I could have seen how I stacked up on the climbs, and know it would have been a huge test in that crowd. I kept looking around thinking "Well, at least there are a few other big guys". Up to the point I crashed out, there was one stretch of ~450w that was taking me to the edge, but thankfully it was taking others there as well, and it calmed down before I had to either back off or blow up.

Got to find a better approach to solving the N+1 equation: breaking frames is just not the way to do it!
