OK, VanceMac, spill it! How many medals and in which events did you win? I'm sure Racer Ex will chime in with his own additions to his lengthy palmarès.

It was a mostly frustrating weekend for me filled with mishaps, mental mistakes, and assorted regrets.

I was quite happy to run with Team Ex in the 4k Team Pursuit, and win gold despite one of those aforementioned mishaps -- my crank came loose, making loud clunking noise in every turn, which I had never heard before. Freaked me out, and any other time I would have pulled out immediately. As it was, though, being distracted by that meant I was losing the wheel in front of me a lot. Not good in that event... you need every bit of draft you can squeeze.

The weekend was salvaged a bit by winning the scratch race. Final tally: 2 gold, 1 silver, 1 bronze. I know it sounds disingenuous to be disappointed with that, and overall I'm ecstatic and had a super fun weekend overall. I learned some lessons, and am anxious to fine tune some aspects of my game.

It was a great field... met lots of new track enthusiasts for the first time, whether from San Diego, or folks who just don't do much track other than the these big events. Weather was great, officials were great, and not a single crash all weekend.

Start of Team Sprint with Ex and Big M:

Welcome to my world...I don't mind losing if some is just better, but the mistakes and misses grind on me.

That was a "salvage" like Antique Roadshow where the guy finds a Picasso in his basement. Terrific ballsy move. Gold medal even

My weekend was similar to Vance's...in part because we rode in two team events together. Had a bad run in the 500m thanks to over thinking my gearing. You know that thing they say about sticking to your first answer? Yep. Missed the podium by .03s. Big Marv won though barely beating out Vance so I was happy for them.

Vance, Marv and I lined up for the Team Sprint. First start Marv spun the threads off the wheel so we were scrambling to get back on the line. In my haste I didn't tighten my toes straps enough and pulled out. Game over on what should have been a gold medal run.

2k I pulled out again, even with the straps tight. Look at my cleats to find the rubber bumper stuff they put on Keo cleats had come loose and was keeping the pedal from closing all the way . Rip that stuff off and hope I made it off the line in one piece. I did, and had a very good run. Fastest 2k and gold. Team Pursuit went as noted, we had originally planned to have Marvin take a big pull then go down to three, Vance was heads up when he had to pull out and we adjusted perfectly and came across with fastest TP time and another gold.

The scratch race was a blast. Vance took a flyer with two to go that had no way of succeeding and stuck it. I got the bronze in a photo.

80 lap points race they threw us in with everybody 35+ on up. I had great legs and ended up taking two laps and the gold.

It was a hard race with repeated attacks. The last one 2/3 of the way through stuck with 6 guys.

Vance and Racer Ex; That is the way to clean up on medals. That Planet X frame seems to be working well.

Great results Vance and Ex! Our state track champs are in two weeks. The guys who earlier stated they wanted to do the team pursuit and sprint have all disappeared.

Glad to see so many people racing this past weekend. Glad to hear about the good results and sorry to hear about some of the challenges.

Despite the badgering from VanceMac and Racer Ex I did NOT race at our Masters District Track Championships. I did compete in the Kool 'N Fit Criterium on Sunday. This race was also the Chris "Cono" Contreras Memorial race with all proceeds from the race going to the late racer's family.

The Masters 55+/60+ race had an added twist. The Women Pro/1/2/3 race was on the 1 mile circuit at the same time. Initially we were told that we'd be racing together and scored separately (which was causing some angst among the male racers), but officials announced at the line that the women would start 30 seconds(?) behind us. The race was fast at the start because (I think) no one wanted the women to catch us. We caught the main pack and a chase group by halfway. A few laps later we caught the women's breakaway but that's where our race fell apart. From then until bell lap we would pass the break of three women, slow, have them pass us, and repeat until we pick up the pace for good with 2 laps to go. We stayed ahead for the entire bell lap.

What did I do?

I attacked and joined some breaks but nothing stuck. One time when I was tired of the back-and-forth with the women's break, I went to the front and drilled it for 3/4 of a lap. That basically didn't work as when I sat up, no one pulled through.

Didn't join in on the field sprint festivities and finished 15th. One of my teammates won and he received a memorial jersey with a silkscreen picture of Chris Contreras on the front.

The 50+ field was much larger and I spent a long time trying to carefully get to the front. That went for naught with about two to go and I finished near the back. Basically ended up being a training exercise.

When I raced team pursuit with Vance and he crushed an IP after, I posted that we had a real pony here with great potential. Vance in this pic looks like a more compact, slimmer version of Chris Hoy doing the standing start. Vance's position at the start looks really good - knuckles out, arms straight, body forward, back flat and etc.

Here is the start of the Brits team sprint with Hoy at the top of the pic.

Ha, just stop it right now! I appreciate the nod, Hermes. I've worked on the start a fair bit, and still have a ways to go. That Hoy video someone posted here (probably you) was actually a big help. It really hammered home the importance of straight arms at the beginning... before that, I would lift my wheels (sometimes front, usually rear) repeatedly.

The other anecdote that helped me a lot was dividing the start into three distinct phases... 1) from the start to turn 1, very stiff, up-and-down, piston-like; 2) throughout turn 1 & 2, it's more of a traditional road sprint where you are aggressively swinging; and 3) along the back straight, still out of saddle, but it's clean, not swinging. Again, I'm still a noob, but it's always fun learning new skills. I mostly like that photo because it makes it look like I actually have a tricep... because with those prissy new white skinsuits, all anyone said all weekend was "you're too skinny, eat a cookie!"

Strong work, Vance. It was great to meet you and Big M at the temple, too. And wow, what a place (again)!

Another omnium at Encino. Last of 3 in the Hansing Cup Series. I was entered in the 50+ and Cat 3. Since both were in the same session, I was going to go easy in the 50+ and focus on the Cat 3... but then only 2 other Cat 3s showed up. We still ran the Cat 3 (talked a couple other 50+ Cat 3s into joining us to satisfy judges minimum), but it was more like an exhibition. Ended up winning the 50+, which gave me the series win -- an actual trophy, I think first one since I was probably 14.
