I love those old PSAs. "I learned it from you!" is on of my favorite retorts. I don't think everyone gets it, but I'll bet most people in this forum's demographic would remember it. While I'm one of the few people on here NOT coached by Ex, it still fits, since I've certainly learned a lot from his posts/exploits.
I'm not really into the trophy/medals thing, but it was a nice touch for the series, especially since there were so many Junior categories. Since you asked:
VanceMac, pretty soon you'll be looking for places to put all of your trophies. :) Really nice work!
BTW, I forgot to mention that it was a bit weird seeing your wife racing in Costa Mesa without you being there. But that's what happens sometimes when you have a racing couple -- different races in different places.
Yeah, he's another guy that I got back into the sport. Someone at work told him to contact me about racing in SoCal. Of course, he ends up being a lot faster than I. :mad: ;) At least he's a younger Master.
Also look out for Roger Yolton at the track. He's a teammate and given how he's come back into the sport he might start making some waves on the track. He's in your age group.

It was only a training race, but it was my first race back while rehabbing my shoulder, so it was a big test. I sat up at the finish. My orders were clear. Just in case they weren't clear enough, I taped them to my top tube. Shelter. Cover any strong multiple rider moves. Stay out of the field sprint, but try a kilo at the end.
Warmups went well, but the start of the A race was delayed 30 minutes due to a wreck in the B race. Right shoulder. Bad karma. I stayed loose and lined up at the back. We had two pros (JP and JD) and at least a dozen Cat1's in a field of about 60. By the halfway point I was OTF in four breaks with the pros that stayed away for a lap or two but got caught. The race averaged almost 28mph so it was fast. With 12 to go JP and a Cat1 took off while I was in the middle of the field. I made my way to the front and bridged to another guy who had gotten away and was chasing hard. I pulled through, he latched on, and I pulled but he could not pull through. I decided to use my kilo effort at that point and try and bridge the 200m to the break. I wound up doing about 1.5km and got within 30m but that was my kilo so I sat up. With 7 to go the prime bell rang and a few guys took off. I moved to the outside middle of the field while we caught them. The expected lull and staredown started so I drilled it up the outside in the saddle about 400 out with a Cat1 on my wheel. I kept it going, sprinting with all I had out of the saddle and took the prime that paid for dinner. I got back into the field, hoping to try one more solo effort, but at that point the field speed was too high so I just rolled around and sat up at the bell. My bike handling skills were just fine, and there is no pain in my shoulder. Mission accomplished. Six days to Exeter.
Well done, Shovel. You must have worked hard at the rehab, it took me longer to be pain-free.

BTW racing with Di2 is all that I hoped it would be. Incredible. Being able to shift in the speed bars seems almost unfair, until you realize that my racing age is 56 and I'm mixing it up with 20 year olds.
I started going over the start list for the NSG. Yikes. My field is bigger than Ex's, and AJet's is bigger than mine. I have a lot of work to do.

Raced at the world famous Eldo (El Dorado Park) Tuesday Twilight Race this week. Our cross-town rivals, Velo Allegro, showed up in force for the Cat 3/4 race. I was really tired from a big workshop that I facilitated that day at work. After sitting in for about 1/3 of the 1 hour race, I decided to see what I had in the tank. Some attacks were me initiating and hoping someone would come with, some were bridging to another attack.
My 4th time off the front I tried to bridge. A young Cat 4(?) was closing on me so I eased slightly so that he could get on. After pulling a bit more I gave the elbow and moved over a bit. He decided to sprint past me. Twerp!
I got caught and he got caught just after and the guys who I was chasing got caught. As I came up to Mr. Twerp I said, "Sprinting past me did you a lot of good, didn't it?" I couldn't understand his reply. A bit later 3 guys go away. One of them was from Velo Allegro. His teammates shut down the front of the field.
1-3/4 laps to go I told my sprinter teammate, "I'm going to get on the front and time trial for as long as they'll let me. You can sprint from there." I roll to the front and slowly ramp it up to 26 MPH. after a few seconds I look back and I have a gap. I look up and surprisingly, I see another teammate ahead of me. I didn't know he was off the front. I catch up to him and say, "Hang on." Pulled him around a bit and then he pulls through. I look back and we have a sizable gap. Unfortunately, about 400m from the finish the pack caught us. Our sprinter took the field sprint for 4th overall.
Riding the 6 miles back home I was cooked.
shovel - great ride. There are a lot of racers that can't do what you did even when in the heart of their fitness while in their prime. I'm not thinking of myself, of course not.
Great job, Shovel... woohoo.
And Cleave, all you can do is shake your head at that stuff. Sounds like a great race effort, though.

Salinas Downtown Crit - W3/4...with the pack until five to go, third prime popped me OTB...finished seventh or eighth, not sure - photo finish sprint.
Felt pretty darn good!

Bad Luck Ranch Circuit Race:
Riding really well. Clipped a pedal in this super slooooooowwwwwww hairpin and tipped over. Chased, got back on, then the bike stopped shifting. Cable had come undone in the crash. Fixed that, chased some more, was almost on and one of the teams started drilling it cutting the field up and I decided to pull the plug. State crit tomorrow. Last time I raced here I flatted.
SOmetimes your the hammer, sometimes the nail, and sometimes the thumb that gets hit by the hammer when trying to drive the nail into asphalt.
