Bad luck, Ex. It's clearly bad karma to post about how rarely you dig a pedal...

Good luck tomorrow.

Ex, wow, I'm sorry to hear that. I'm glad you're okay. That's the big thing. You'll do well tomorrow, without a doubt.

Detail on my race.

Eight rider 3/4 field, pace went off fairly easy. I surfed in the middle of the pack, even moved up to third wheel a few times. First prime bell rang, and the pace went up. I was still very comfortable. Hit the sprint for the prime at almost 28 MPH, but was fifth. Got gapped a little on that one, and it had hurt, but I bridged up with only a little difficulty. Tried hard to stay out of the wind, and got a good recovery. Second prime bell rang, and the pace slowed. It picked way up at the S turn prior to the front straight. I was sitting on the inside line, concerned with staying sheltered, but those gals really hit the gas hard and I was stretched again. Lost about 50 yards on that prime, and spent the better part of the following lap digging deep and bridging up. With six to go, the prime bell rang again, and I was determined to stay in the pack - period. Pace slowed way down again, and then at the S turn, they drilled it again. I had thought they'd do that, but I just couldn't match it. Tried very hard to bridge, could feel an impending pop coming up, so I sat up, and settled in OTB. I didn't know there was another rider behind me until half way through the bell lap. I had moved to the right side of the course to try to shelter from some wind, and she went by on the left. Nope, not gonna happen! I jumped on her wheel, and stayed glued to her until the front straight. I heard her shift up, and knew she was going to go, so I shifted up, moved left and hit the gas. We were absolutely neck and neck at the line (and there was a LOT of yelling coming from the crowd), and I still don't know where I placed. It doesn't matter - I raced well, I'm figuring this stuff out, and Cleave - I'm smiling more than ever!

Riding really well. Clipped a pedal in this super slooooooowwwwwww hairpin and tipped over. Chased, got back on, then the bike stopped shifting. Cable had come undone in the crash. Fixed that, chased some more, was almost on and one of the teams started drilling it cutting the field up and I decided to pull the plug. State crit tomorrow. Last time I raced here I flatted.

SOmetimes your the hammer, sometimes the nail, and sometimes the thumb that gets hit by the hammer when trying to drive the nail into asphalt.
Oy!

I wasn't supposed to be racing with Racer Ex but 8.5 miles into the 55+/60+ race I flatted. The race was pretty aggressive and I was feeling reasonably good. Went through the bottom hairpin and felt the rear wheel start to slide out. Figured I just jumped on it a little too early. Going up the hill I didn't feel as good as I had and started falling off just before the top hairpin. Thought I might get back on and took the corner fast. Rear wheel slid a lot but still managed to catch it. Got out of the saddle and then sat back down and that's when I felt the rim bottom out on the pavement.

Got my spare wheels and money and entered the 45+ race. I think it was the start of lap three (of nine) when I saw Ex on the ground.

I think I did two more laps when it got fast going up the hill and I popped. Kept riding. Someone who got dropped before me caught me. We worked together but got lapped coming out of the bottom hairpin and that ended up being our last lap. Not sure how I got scored but I wasn't quite DFL on the road.

It's hard racing with these kids.

I'll be in Ontario tomorrow for the crit districts with Ex but not racing with him.

Nice racing, Cleave. That course sounds like bad luck.

Sara, in the first prime when you were fifth wheel, were you out there sprinting, or tucked in just trying to maintain position?

I was tucked in keeping my position. Only two gals sprinted for it, even though the pace came way up - have a look at the Strava, you can see it.

What were those two blips at the beginning, not that Strava data is accurate? I can see where you popped off, but you still kept the power on. Good stuff. Your fitness is better, but the reason you stayed in this race so long is you have learned to race smart.

The two "blips" were two laps of warmup. I didn't reset the Garmin before the whistle blew. That's why the average speed is low, too.

Shovel, it's taken 16 races, but I am starting to figure it out. Also, the Senior Games went a long way towards boosting my confidence, which was really lacking. Now I expect to stay in the pack. Big difference, and it shows!

State Crit 50+: Got into a 3 man break going into the first corner. Hi ho, hi ho, it's off to work and all that.

Took two primes while we were out. Clipped a pedal (twice in two days) and scared the carp out of my buddy who was following. Turns out the BB on the new bike is 3.5mm lower than my old rig. Hmmmm.

We finally got caught with 5 to go. Oh well.

4 to go I reeled in an attack, two to go we had control of the first 5 spots in the field with me on the front. Planned to drill it for the 2nd to last lap then let the guys take over for the final lap.

Felt something funny after the long straight, squirrley in the corner, and yep, flat tire. Kinda messed up our leadout, did the best we could but our big man could only manage 2nd.

45+: Nothing was sticking, tried to get in a break but no dice. Tried to rally the troops but we lacked precision and were worn down a bit from the prior race. Things were getting sketchy, had our two sprinters covered with teammates so I took a big pull with two to go and hoped we could get in position. We didn't, got 6th and 9th or something like that. Same guy won both races.

Wrenched my back partway through the race and am having trouble bending at the waist.

Sucks about the clippage and back, Ex. But I'll be curious to hear more about this:

How it started, who was in it, etc. I was in 50+ last year where the break went at turn 1. They had 4, I believe, and it stuck. The field wasn't as deep as yours today, obviously. Would have been stuff of legends had only 3 made it stick with that field.

You might be thinking of '11, last year was another field sprint with us getting 2nd (again).

This one was Parks taking off from the gun and me following. Next thing I know we had a gap so we started hitting the gas at turn 2. I was surprised we got space right away, I was pretty comfortable surfing but apparently others weren't.

The Wall got to us so we had two big teams disrupting things and two teams chasing. The rest was just riding. There's a little bit of me that wished I had gone harder but given that we were out form the gun you never want to throw everything at a break like that...ultimately you want to win and darn it was close.

I'm riding pretty well right now, looking at the file all the peak speeds came on my pulls and when you see your best 5m come from the 2nd race it's a good indicator that all the asthma and allergy issues might be under control.

Luck wasn't great but I actually had a lot of fun today.

Did a bunch of stretching and the back isn't perfect but it's better.

Posting here because, while it wasn't a race, it sure felt like one to me, and I sure learned a lot.

Davis Livestrong Century.

The course is Davis, up towards Woodland, back south to Putah Creek and the time trial course, out towards Vacaville, through the small
hills there, then back to Davis, coming in from the south - 96.something miles.

Neutral start to get out of downtown Davis, then the strong riders at the front put the hammer down. I was determined to hang with the lead
group for as long as I could without risking failing to complete the ride. I made it about 25 miles. Every turn or slowing (to cross roads on the open route) was followed by a surge back up to 22-24 mph. By about mile fifteen I knew my time with the pack was limited. Averaged about 21.5 mph over the first 25 miles.
Then I was OTB and soloed most of the rest of the way - Kinda pathetic when heading into some strong winds, otherwise not bad. Final results: 5:46 total time, 5:17 riding time. Lead group from my 'team' finished in under 5 hours despite having to stop to fix multiple flats. Great experience - I now have a sense for what a Crit must feel like. Lots of lessons learned and some open questions as well.

Oh, and we raised 43,000+ bucks for a great cause.

Good: Recovered and had some signs of form throughout the ride - averaged 18.2 mph overall.
New bike worked great.
Hydration - no problems.

Bad: Feeding - just not happy with this - still a work in progress.
Shoes - may need an upgrade here, had some discomfort although nothing residual

Ugly: Saddle - my privates are still feeling weird this morning. Is there a secret to success here?

Saddles are personal, and I found that as I lost weight I had to change models. I used Performance to sample different models; they have a moneyback warranty. You also might check with local shops, I know some Specialized dealers will let you try out a saddle for a week or so. Some saddles like the Fizik Aliante (my personal choice) actually have a bit of a break in period.

A good chamois can make a huge difference here and chamois butter for a long ride is an absolute for me. I ended up with upper end Capo bibs for my long training rides and use Queen Helene's cocoa butter as chamois creme.

Shoes are like saddles but the fully heat moldable ones like the Shimanos are likely to fit much better than not.
