Unless the course was downhill or a bit short, that's a great time.

It was an "out and back" up hill and into the wind both directions that includes an alligator pit.

Encino Summer Race Series started last night. Six events, every other Wednesday night. While the remaining 5 are omniums/keirin, the first one was exclusively team time trials (and flying 200m). I only did Team Sprint, which means I was there for 5 hours for 1 lap.

Lining up for 200s.

Team Pursuit.

Team Pursuit (very mixed crowd at this series, thus all the drop bars):

valygrl, AJ, and shovelhd, nice racing.

I stayed to watch Ex's race on Sunday and it was pretty exciting for a while. I guess I should have cheered louder. Wish I had a watch with me. I would have called out time gaps. It was impressive while it lasted. Then at 2-to-go it looked just as impressive for a different reason.

My race (55+) was mostly fun, but less impressive. Worked with someone to try to bridge to the first 5-man break. No dice, but the pack caught them on the next lap. Almost immediately another break went off the front. Three(?) laps to go I tried to get the pack going fast enough to reel them back for my sprinter. Spent almost a lap at the front. Once again the teams with guys in the break just sat on my wheel and laughed. No one else helped. Insane from my perspective as all of the medals were in the break. Oh well.

I wanted to get up to Hellyer last night and then this evening to watch the races there, but life got in the way, as did a race I did this afternoon.

CCCX Bayview Circuit Race, W4

I was not feeling all that good going into this race. I was fatigued, mentally and physically (one begets the other), but I decided to do the race just the same. I need the reps, plain and simple! It was a short course, about three miles total, on a new stretch of closed highway, 180 degree turns at each end. The course was roller hell, lots of them, and there was a pretty good "breeze" coming straight down the course on the return leg, which was also the steepest direction on the course.

Five rider field, two W3 and three W4 (I would have preferred a larger field). It was easy to see that if I just finished I'd podium. I think that notion had a just little bit to do with my performance, which was definitely not as spirited as it has been as of late. We started at the whistle, 50 minutes, and right away I had a problem. My right foot popped out of the pedal (I've GOT to cut those rubber goombas off of those cleats!), and I got a good shin smack for my effort. I was now off the back, and those women simply rode away from me. I was doing 36 MPH at one point to try to reattach, but I finally decided that chasing wasn't going to do me any favors, so I eased it a bit and basically time trialled the course for the rest of the race. I only averaged about 15 MPH (that wind on the return leg really slowed me down), but I stayed with it and finished. I'd say it was fun, but it's more fun to actually race and earn the position.

Anyway, I got a T shirt for my efforts and got my photo taken on an honest to heavens podium! I'll take it.

Here's my take on small fields. You showed up. They didn't. You earned a podium. They didn't.

Now can we all get this cleat and clip in thing over with?

shovel - you mean it's supposed to take fewer than three tries to clip in at a race?

Thanks, guys!!

You have to smack your shin with the pedal when you pop out and then try to bridge up to the pack or it doesn't count!

Fitchburg Longsjo Classic, M40+/M50+ combined field, 10th, 7th in the combined sprint points. This is a 50 minute criterium, mixed field, separate scoring except for the sprint points which were combined, which I found out afterwards . I love this course. Brought back great memories. The hill up the front straight and the long sprint suit my style. No problem clipping in . Settled in at the back with the ex-pros. Grabbed some sprint points on a few laps. No breaks were getting very far up the road so I just waited and watched. With three to go I thought about a kilo but decided against it. On the last lap, two guys started a shoving match right before the technical turn three, so I had to dive inside to get around them. I came out of turn four in good position for a top 5 right behind the Champ. Then two guys hooked bars a few riders up and crashed hard, one needing an ambulance. I had to juke left to avoid them, which cost me a few places. It's a shame because I was closing.

I went into this race coaching myself to race smart. I did, probably too smart. I left a lot in the tank. Next week, New Britain, and I want a win. It's time to start racing like I know I can.

Great to see you Mikey and bostongarden.

Nice shovel! Good job on the podium, sara.

I raced CO masters crit champs yesterday. I usually race sw4, but there wasn't a 4 race, so I raced 45+, with a combined field/scored separately with 35+ and 55+. 14 in my race, 13 in the 35's, 4 in the 55's.

I tailgunned the main pack (not on purpose, just barely hanging on) for most of the race, and got detached at the last prime at 6 to go and couldn't get back on, soloed in, thinking I was DFL, but apparently a lot of others had been shelled much earlier - so I was 7th in the field of 14, with a lot of 2's and 3's. Happy with my result.

Lodi Cyclebration M123 race. Stupid hot. Flatted the rear tire on the neutral and I'd left my backup wheels in the car so I was walking my bike back to where my kids were watching when I saw a teammate who also races Campy 10. Hey man, can you loan me your wheel? I got it on and got to the line just as they blew the whistle. Holy crap was it fast. All strung out from the get go. After about 30 minutes I was beginning to feel sick so I rode another lap to see if it would let up or I would feel better. Neither occurred so I just pulled myself.

Looks like you're getting your stuff back, shovelhd. I missed something, and tried to read back, but I'm still not sure what went on, other than a shoulder issue. I hope that heals as well as possible.

I saw your result yesterday, valygrl, and you did well.

Sounds like a rough day, caloso.

Hellyer Velodrome Challenge- Race was on the national track calendar so it brought out some talent including Kenny Williams and his two teammates from Washington, and 4 local guys from my old rival team. I had me myself, and I. Vance volunteered to help but as nice as that was, I figured he should ride his own race. Two day thing. Really hot...100+. Gusting winds.

Timed events on Friday: I suck at the 500m. 50+ 4th. I suck a bit less at the Kilo. 40+ 3rd. I suck less at the team pursuit, we ended up putting a team together at the last minute. And I mean last minute, the track announcer borrowed shoes and my kit to come ride with us. 2nd, a few seconds off the winning team which practices together all year round and took silver at Nats a couple years back. OK, there were only two teams but I had decent legs and our time was pretty good; I was taking full lap pulls which helped the other guys.

Mass start Saturday: Hotter. Points race I tried to take a lap but on a 333 in that kind of heat with two teams chasing...I got close. Predicated my race on being invisible for the first half and then taking a lap, had I just contested all the sprints who knows. Tied for 3rd on points but lost the tie breaker on a do or die move with 6 laps to go. Got caught with 1.5 to go. Rolled the dice.

Scratch race I covered moves, pulled one back, then missed the winning move trying to get clear of towing some folks around. Spent a couple laps bridging and got on right when the rang the bell for the last lap. Oh well. 7th.

Good turnout, hard conditions, several crashes and ambulance rides sort of put a damper on things. Tactically it was a C+ weekend. Legs were B+, but the heat had a lot to do with that. Couple of nice compliments on how I rode, which never sucks to hear. Good to do a 333 in the heat as a preview for Nats.

Hellyer: Hot. 12 Races. Won $55. Spread too thin, but if you're gonna drive 12 hours, might as well get your money's worth, right? First class velodrome and event.

Thanks. A few years ago I would have tried to macho it out, but I wasn't making any progress up the group, the back was getting sketchy, my stomach was getting dicey, and it just wasn't much fun. After watching the E3 race go for a few laps -- the other race I'd signed up for -- I began to wish I'd saddled up for that one. It was much slower, just reinforcing how hard the M123 fields can be. Of course, I was dehydrated and if I'd tried to go back to back, I would have had 2 DNFs for the day and possibly a trip to the medics' tent.
