Congrats Tetonrider on the results. My wife and I were there. The TT course was really nice and we conditions were excellent. The weather in the mountains can certainly change quickly comparing the TT weather to the road race.

Reminds me of Gila and the winds. It's hideous when you're doing it but kind cool to look back at. Good job in both races.

It didn't. Been texting back and forth. He hit the deck (no details) and is overnighting in the hospital. Busted up a bit (ribs and a bruised lung) and and is going under the knife Tuesday for a collarbone.

I am really frustrated/PO'd/sad that this happened. AZT's a really good person who the racing gods have been spitting on this year. Big middle finger to the racing gods.

EVERYBODY ELSE STAY UPRIGHT. That's an order.

FWIW (not making this about me but venting a bit) I hate it when folks get banged up. Really really hate it.

That just sucks. AZT, heal up fast.

EX, I agree totally. I was at the elite district track yesterday and listened to 3 crash stories AND Larry N crashed an broke a rib the night before. 3 of the 4 are going to masters track worlds and their participation is now dubious. I am going to lie under my desk in the fetal position.

No good at all. The upside is AZT gets surgery to repair the collarbone.

Heal quick, AzTallRider.

I'll see if I can elaborate before the latest pain med kicks in. I basically zoned out after the turnaround as I recalibrated from a conservative target to laying it out there. Apparently I had my eyes down approaching the only turn on the course, and suddenly into my field of view came the shoulder stripe and ahead of that the gravel shoulder. I couldn't keep it upright as I went into the gravel and fell on my left side. I'm told the bike is okay. Same side as last January. I broke some ribs again (a couple of repeats there and a new one) in the back, same as January. That caused a small pneumothorax that has some blood from bone fragments, but no puncture. That part is minimal compared to January.

But my shoulder is 'floating' because of a broken scapula, and multiple breaks of the clavicle. Surgery on that Tuesday morning. Don't know if a plate is going in or what.

I'm in good spirits but that may because it is ludicrous its easy to be denial. Or it may be the Morphine and Percocet

Oh, and even with the low power target, I had been smooth, and was under my PR for the 40k. Still a long way to go, but I was on target and executing my plan.

AzT.........

I don't know what to say. I'm so upset and hurting for you right now. This sport can really, really suck....

Positive? You'll be "fixed right", and next season you'll be a monster.

You do what you've always told me - Look Long.

Thanks for all the well wishes folks. I know I've tapped that keg repeatedly, but somehow the beverage keeps flowing.

Update is that I will be sharing hardware styles with my bro Fabian. Plate and screws being installed tomorrow. Will have OT the same day, then range of motion therapy soon. Trainer should be in the plan almost immediately, but off the road for ~6 weeks. It's clear I'm on the 'crazy cyclist plan'. The plate will get me back on the bike weeks before it would otherwise be possible. Lots of quetions on what happened until I finally got to the Ortho doc's. No need to explain it to them; cyclists with shattered clavicles make them yawn.

I expect to be out of here Wed morning. Nice to be in a hospital room connected to your secure work netwok - no need for VPN. I'm across a parking lot from my office.

Boston Mayor's Cup, M40+, NCC, warm and windy, in the field somewhere but out of the money. This is one of my favorite races although I don't expect much. There are always big, fast, national fields. The course is your typical city course but not rectangular, and it's not especially technical. My pre-race routine was disrupted by a bomb scare in the race parking garage. The cops wouldn't let us back in. With 45 minutes before the start, in street clothes, I wasn't exactly calm. I waited around for 10 minutes then took off to find a way to sneak in, which I did. I had to do an abbreviated trainer warmup, then a few laps around the course. We lined up, and they held off the start to let as many guys get out of the garage as possible. There goes my warmup. At least it was everyone.

So the race gets going at the usual 30+ average blistering pace for the first ten laps. I had started in the second row, but drifted back towards the middle of the field because of the surprisingly horrendous bike handling skills of many in the field. Maybe they're used to cross or something and forgot how to race on the road. For a group of Cat1-3 I was surprised. A break of six or seven goes up the road but we reel them back shortly thereafter. By this time I'm a lot closer to the front. Once the counter starts, the pace picks up bigtime. Coming into tun three some numbnut divebombs the inside, loses it, wrangles with others in front of me and a bunch go down. I had to come to a complete trackstand stop, praying that nobody rear-ends me. I work my way through the mayhem, but there's about 200m between me and the field. I crush it to catch back on. Right after I catch a group of three goes up the road, which stuck. I make my way towards the front of the group again, and numbnut #2 pulls the same stunt in turn three again. This time I was able to keep moving at 5-8mph and weave around the carnage, but yet again, I have to bridge to the field, this time with 4 to go. I fought like heck to get back to the front but I just didn't have enough left in the tank. Many good riders got blown off the back or hung on for dear life to finish. I wasn't last by any means.

This ends my season. It was such a pleasure to have my wife with me. She sat in the grandstands and prayed for my safety. I got my kid a press pass so they were able to go just about anywhere they wanted to on the course to shoot. I saw bostongarden and a friend in the beer tent afterwards as we watched the women 3-4. Then the family had a nice lunch in the North End, stopped for pastry, took a drive by BU, then headed home.

I have a surgical consult on Thursday, then it's decision time.
