I did ride the MTB for one of the laps. It helped in the wooded area but really bogged down in the thick mud. The frozen mud, leaves and grass on the cross bike are from just 1 and 1/2 laps.

Low Key Hill Climb Mount Hamilton Thanksgiving morning.

I sort of look like a famous doper.

Here is my wife and her team mate finishing.

Nice photos, Hermes..with the exception of the one in the middle. Is your wife's teammate riding steel, or is that a Calfee?

She is riding a Calfee. That is our team leader and founder of the Sisters and Misters of No Mercy. This is an ad hoc team that is put together for this series. It started out as the Sisters of No Mercy and they added men and renamed the team the next year. Our team won the hill climb series this year amassing the most team points.

As I was rounding the corner to charge up to the finish line, there was, ahem, a plus size woman ahead and I hit the afterburners to make sure I passed her at the finish line just in case she was in the race.

Race #62 for 2013: Piru TT (20 Km)
Result: DNF

Temperature was somewhere between 30-32F when we arrived. It was in the low 40s by the time the race started. I felt surprisingly good, given the temperature. One of my teammates was my 30 sec man. Course is rolling, downhill on outbound leg. Also had a small tailwind. About 2.5 miles into the race, the road had a lot of dirt on it; apparently from farm vehicles exiting a driveway. 1 mile later, I'm about 10 meters from my teammate when I notice my front tire (tubular) is flat. I stop and see that I'm 3.5 miles from the start. I decided to ride on it at 6-7 MPH instead of waiting or walking. Got back to the start/finish a few minutes after both of my teammates finished. Don't know if the tire is repairable, but the rim is fine. Evaluating putting sealant into tubular tires or switching to clincher wheels for TT.

Cleave, wouldn't hurt to try a bottle if Pit Stop if the casing is still intact.

Sheesh, Cleave, what is it with you and TT flats, huh? Sorry to hear about the bad luck.

Cleave, sorry to hear about this outcome. 62 races for a season is a HUGE number, and your DNP percentage is low, right? Still - I know you must be disappointed.

I knew this would happen. That's why I slept in and didn't go. I had 60 races by then end of August. I still have 60 races.

The Low Key Hill Climb results are final and our team won the event. My wife won the age adjusted category posting the highest score on one of the steepest longest climbs beating out strongman 50+ Carl (on our team) who took second. LKHC results here.

This is an interesting plot of the average times over the years from the LKHC. The average time is getting faster. The series always starts with Montebello and finishes with Mount Hamilton.

Early Bird Training Crit #4, W4 (experienced riders)

It was a training crit, but it was a race, so I put it here! Here's the Strava.

I attended an hour long mentoring session which ended about 35 minutes before the race. There was some fast paced, high power drills in that session that probably burned some of my matches. I didn't get the warmup I wanted, but the training session certainly counted for that.

I made 8 laps of the 10 in the crit. I accomplished all of my goals and then some.

This was a mentored race. I started on the front row. I was very relaxed, felt okay, nothing special. My two teammates were no-shows (illness, both - legitimate), so I was by myself. Went off at the whistle, I sat in and paced near the front while the race settled down. The pace was brisk, right up to 22 MPH, and it held that for most of the first lap. Bike skills in the group were generally solid, save for one rider who was having difficulties with the Botts Dots. Turns out I wasn't the only one who marked her. I was concerned with NOT feeling the wind. Mostly, I did a decent job of that, moving around in the peloton to find shelter. Still, I felt it more than I wanted to, mostly because of pack dynamics. I moved up a couple of times to the front, but I wasn't going to sit in the wind, so I slotted in third or fourth and stayed on wheels. That was my mission! I found myself in a five woman break on the fifth lap (I was fifth wheel) due to a good jump off of the third turn (which we all covered), but all of us were surprised by the gap we made, I think, so we allowed the pack to swallow us back up (the mentors preferred we stay together, too). One of the mentors was a teammate, and he watched me closely and gave advice from time to time. He didn't play favorites, he helped others, too, but he knew my name and used it. On lap seven, I was starting to feel my lack of base and intensity, so I knew one more lap would do it. There was no point in popping and having to chase. After the turn following the front straight, I got gapped, and just could no longer match the acceleration off of the corner. I went wide and sat up, cruised around to the start/finish and called it a day.

After the race, KoD, the mentor on my team, gave me a debrief and had some really nice things to say. He said my placement was perfect, I had surprised and pleased him with my bike skills and my strength, and that my season should be really good. It will be, if I enter only flat races!

Hey, I can hang with the kids! I'm racing smarter, not necessarily stronger (yet), but the good run I had at the end of last season was apparently due to gaining experience and learning to race within myself, with my head, and using the strengths of the other riders. Age and treachery? You bet!

Nice job on your first race of the season, Sarals!

Mentors wanted to shut down the break, that must have been annoying!

Thanks!

Actually, I can see their reasoning. It was a training race. There were several mentors and they were very proactive. Still, yeah, it would have been nice to get up the road a ways!

Fellas, thanks!

Cherry Pie in two weeks. That won't be so much fun with that soul-crushing hill - and my lack of base! But, when the red flag drops, I seem to do okay.
