Chuck, the legs held up just fine as long as I was in the field and NOT going up hills. Surprisingly, the rollers weren't bad. I stayed sheltered on them, kept position, and my recovery was good going over the top. I think I anticipated better, and had better momentum going over than I used to. What got me was the work-over on Keyes Road. That just about did me in! The peloton really stretched out at that point, even though the pace wasn't that high. People were getting beat up and going single file. Still, I fought to keep wheels, probably a bit too hard, because when the leaders hit the gas on the second lap - boing - the cord broke and I couldn't find a wheel for love nor money!

Madera = simple 4 corner crit with good pavement that may have wind, a windy time trial with bees and the road race has 2.2 miles of very rough broken pavement per lap before the rollers.

The Madera crit has railroad tracks, too...but I hear they're not a concern. Bees? Great. I'm sure I'll get stung! The road race is 51 miles. How many times over that broken pavement?? I'd better get some tougher tires on the bike for that. There's no help for my body!

51 miles = 3 loops or 6.6 miles of broken pavement.

The railroad tracks are not a problem but... after the railroad tracks and if there is wind, the field slows and bunches up - this is where crashes happen.

Madera is a perfect course for a tubeless set up...impossible to pinch flat in any of the potholes.

Last year I got stung three times...once in the head. All during the TT.

Two crits today. 100 person fields give or take in both. Rode strong, chased and attacked, kept Turbo in check, we took 3rd and 4th in the 1st race but didn't place in the 2nd. So much horsepower in these fields that only one crit this year ended with winning break. So I work for the guys and hope for wind.

Was too caught up in my own race-weekend to respond when you posted this, Sara, but it sounds like you did well in a very challenging situation. Gratz!

100 person crit's filled with horsepower. That's just an entirely different animal than our Arizona races. Way to go on the placements.

27.5 MPH in the 45's. 50's was only 26.8.

@sarals, good job at Snelling. More race experience and more intensity.

I asked AzTR if the pace in yesterday's crit was "normal" for AZ. He said, "No." (Plus some other stuff. ) It felt normal for this year's SoCal 50+/55+ crits.

AzT, Cleave, thanks! First lap average was 20.3 MPH over 14 miles. Not bad for a bunch of girls! Of course, USAC has failed to note that I even finished - yet. I'm not on the race results, at all. Well, that's okay, I'm a perpetual 4, anyway. I did what I needed to do in the race, too. That feels pretty good!

Great job on the race scene everyone. Rubber side stayed down and everyone seems satisfied too! I am starting to get the itch to pin a number on even though I'm still full on with ice fishing season. Went on the big lake today with my son. Our 10 day forecasts indicate below freezing every day. I don't remember a better year with thicker ice. I wonder what the gravel roads in mid-Michigan will be like in 4 weeks at the Barry Roubaix? After yesterday's 3 hr fixie ride I get to break out the cross bike for a while.

The USAC results are up and they show me as a DNP. Not happy. I know, I should have checked the results before I left! From now on, I don't leave the finish area until I see that I've been scored, and properly!

Even that is no guarantee, Sara. I stayed for several hours last week while they sorted out a scoring mess. They had me fifth, which seemed right - didn't matter much. But the results are now up in USAC and I'm sixth. Go figger.

Frustrating.

Well, I got some good training, stayed rubber side down, and feel good about that.
