That Dam TT

This was a 2 lap event which covered 30 miles and depending on what device/website you believe between 3000 and 3600' of elevation gain.

I had pre-rode this course a couple of weeks ago and knew going in it was rough (fractured my Garmin screen) and had some dangerous blind corners at the bottom of some fast descents.
Went into the race with the only expectation of hitting some target numbers and being able to drive home.

It was suggested to me to work the race backwards and figure out what numbers to use based on a theoretical finish time then use that to figure out the numbers to use on the uphill, downhill and flats.

Boy did I hose that up. I used the descent percentage on the uphills and the uphill percentages on the downhill
Lap 1 was 10W over and Lap 2 10W under the power I thought I could use for the race.

About the only eventful thing that happened is the time I became airborne and landed crossed up motocross style. Not sure how much energy it takes to get my mass airborne but I'd rather not do that again.

So while the avg met the number I had selected my pacing skills still(!) suck.

The last 2K was a 4% avg grade 6 minute 108% interval

IF 1.003
TSS 170

While the cadaver dogs and buzzards didn't show up for me I only placed 14th of 28.

Not happy that I was unable to meet the numbers I set but was able to drive home without any bones sticking out; always a plus when involved in a hobby.

That's crazy, but I agree with the closing sentiment. Nicely done!

IBO, you're getting there! Me, I've never hosed up a TT. Ever. And Nixon wasn't a crook. I'm learning that TT's are a very disciplined exercise in frustration, and they take some time to learn how to do. You've got all the tools. All of them. You will succeed!

I'm glad you managed to land that jump and keep going straight! Always a bonus.

Good job, my friend!

LAJ, thanks! TT's are still a puzzle, but I've managed to find many of the pieces. I even know where some of them go! It's fun stuff, it really is.

A thing too far...

I haven't done intervals in a while, I've just been JRA as the mood struck.

I do enjoy riding at the track, so last Thursday night I jumped into the Thursday night races at the Boulder Valley Velodrome. I've done this a few times over the summer, and it's always fun, a good workout, and humbling, as there is usually a national champ or two in the field.

Last Thursday, during the first race of the evening, I took a bad fall. I remember hearing a loud crack, noticing that my bike was pointed 20 degrees to the left, and observing that, as I continued straight ahead, there wasn't anything between me and the rapidly approaching boards.

I don't know what happened. I haven't seen the post-crash bike yet, and, since I wasn't on the front or near another racer, I'm not sure that anybody witnessed the crash. What I do know is that I got an ambulance ride, 5 broken ribs, and made a significant donation to the track's skin bank.

I have a whole new appreciation for how painful broken ribs are.

And also that in the blink of an eye you can go from being on top, to being on the outside looking in through the window.

@sarals Great to see you on Sunday and that was the slowest registration line....it was like watching wet paint dry. Congrats on the PR.

As you implied Tom, the trip from the highs to the lows in this sport are often rapid, and beyond our control.

Tom - sorry to hear that. Heal quickly. Broken ribs are, imho, the worst injury. Been there twice and I'd rather have the tib/fib stickin out again.

Saturday was the Club ITT. Just 10 miles and @revchuck flat at only ~40'/mi. Not a USA Cycling event so the field wasn't very strong

Since I had been traveling this past week my expectations were a butt whooping by 3 guys; 2 in their 30's that weigh about the same as a roll of quarters and 1 a year younger than me that's been racing forever.

I was using this as an FTP test on the Slice along with a prep for the final ITT in the MATTS series that is in October as it's a similar course.

Turns out I set a new course record, which I had owned from last year by 1:06.
Beat the one 38 year old Tri guy who owns the bike shop that sponsors the team by 1:24 and the other 32 year old by 1:10. The guy that's a year younger than me was my 1 minute man and he got passed at mile 6 - covered him by 1:36

Finished in 24:34

Unfortunately there is a 90 degree corner that leads to the finish line and it's only 1/2 mile.
I made that a 1 minute 135% interval

IF 1.07
TSS 46

Got a new 20 min power number - both good and bad since now my workouts are harder but I'm gradually getting back the power I lost doing the JRA deal. Another 11 Watts is all I need... I see more intervals in my future

I *think* the fit on the Slice is close. I'll get a proper fit next spring.

Followed up that with ru**i*g 10 miles in the afternoon

Nice job!

Might want to consider the fit sooner if you can squeeze it in. Gives you time to play with things and adapt over the winter.

***ning? Was someone chasing you?

Thanks. As for the fit... Not sure it would be worth it since I *plan/hope* to lose some weight, which is a 180 degree deal from what usually happens in the winter for me and wouldn't want to go have to do the fit again come March. (Read $$$) Reckon I'm wrong eh?

Nobody was chasing me; it's a part of that 'I hit my head on a truck' deal and told the kids father-in-law I'd join him in late October for a run. I have a couple months to prep and it's only 26 miles and change right? UFDA!
