Love the retro stuff. I have an old Alan aluminum frame in the garage I'd like to build up, as well as my father's Masi Gran Criterium (very early 80's). It is in excellent condition considering how many years he rode it... sadly, he's 6" shorter than me.

I think the only way to race on a retro bike is with Vittoria racing shoes with wooden soles, metal cleats, straps and toe clips. Clipless pedals just look wrong.

Only shoes I had with wooden soles were some Marresi shoes from the early 1980s. I still have some Adidas shoes with real leather uppers, plastic soles, and cleats for "standard" cage pedals. However, by the mid to late 1980s when I bought the Shogun, I already had 1st generation Look pedals. I still have some early Look pedals that are essentially new that I could use on my Shogun to be more period correct.

Also, if we're on a period-correct kick, we only had bull horns at that point, no aero bars. I wasn't going to call out Racer Ex for any of those transgressions though.

I still have a set of Duegis with wooden soles. And don't tempt me with that GC. I want an 80's race bike in the worst way.

The vintage stuff is beautiful.

Grumpy's bike just looks mean.

Not sure a 17yo can grasp that, Chuck. I know I'm leaving the dork disc on until he proves he isn't one.

Actually, he's a great kid, and I'm happy to help him ease into the cycling world, even if it's for Tri sprints. We may ride together tomorrow for a bit, since part of my workout is some JRA. I have an old Cateye, and will get him working on cadence. I think it even has HRM capability. He is definitely in a major fitness phase, which started when he trained to be accepted into the Devil Pups (Summer Marine Corp boot camp like experience). He is a natural runner, and got his mile time down to ~5:30 with just a little training. Just started his senior year of HS, and we are shooting for an AF ROTC scholarship. Only issue is that we all agree he should wear a T-Shirt that says "Lazy, but Talented". That first part may actually be changing a bit. Finally.

I've done some fiddling with the Felt TT bike. I leveled the saddle, leveled the elbow pads, and put my Easton EA90 Aeros on it (for training wheels). All I need to do is ride it, now. Ex wants me to put in (much) more time on it. So do I! I plan to put disk covers on a yet to be determined rear wheel and get a 80mm carbon wheel for the front. I'm going to put the PT pickups on it, too - IF I can find a way to hide the wires from the wind (like up the spine of the downtube).

Unfortunately, it doesn't always carry over into late adulthood. As a 17 year old college freshman and walk on to the cross country team, my best five mile time was 24 and change. Hilly courses knocked me back to the 28s. In AIT, I did the two mile run in 11:20, in boots. Oh, for a return to the time when it was that easy...

My college athletics stopped at the end of that cross country season. I realized that I was a guy in a school that was 75% women, and it was 1969. My priorities abruptly changed...and my grades showed it.
