Like I said before, that is an exceptional first year of racing for anyone. Enjoy your offseason.

Short though it will be!!!

Guys, thank you. Credit goes to EVERYONE here; everyone I've met in person from here, and everyone I want to - which is everyone else. I lurked on this racing forum for a couple of years, dabbling, sticking my nose in - and I wanted it, wanted to be a part of it, wanted to race. You guys let me in, gave me quarter, gave me advice, gave me inspiration, gave me crap when I deserved it, and propped me up when I needed it. I am oh so proud to know you all, and even prouder that all of you have helped get me to where I am now.

I mean all of that!

You are like a little sister Sara, only a little bit older.. Your determination and spunk are top shelf. Sophomore seasons usually see big improvements. Hopefully you stay upright the entire season.

I was really discouraged after that mess I made of my FTP test a couple of days ago. I was on the brink of just turning my back on the whole thing. Even though I know that I'm in a "valley", and I know (this is all intellectual) that I'll come back to where I was on my best form last season, or even better, I still can't shake the notion that the spark and punch are gone. What didn't help was getting an email yesterday from one of the two ladies I was so looking forward to riding with on C&W this year telling me that she had quit the team. Talk about being kicked when you're down. Oh, I totally understand her reasons and motivation, and anything that I say that points to "me" is selfish - but still, I left MBRT to ride with a team that had women in my age group.

Today, well, Ex sent me a nice note yesterday - just a few words - that really, really shook me awake. I so appreciated getting that, and today I appreciate it even more.

Now, if my old lady body would just wake up.

And if I'd just quit getting so nervous when something says "TEST" or "RACE" on it.

And, if I could just figure out how to output an even, high power, effort, and sustain it. I'm a "burst" rider - go, rest, go again. That does not a TT rider or climber make.

I've just a few things to work on, huh?

It's the off season Sara. Any test is to establish a start point. I feel the same regarding TT work if that helps.

It does! I'll figure it out. Ex told me after an ITT last summer that ITT's and climbing were pretty similar in the way efforts are meted out - constant and smooth. I'm pretty herky-jerky...

One of the hills on our time ride route is perfect for building TT effort... constant slope (4% I think?) and 9 miles long.

Everybody has a bad test now and then. Don't worry about it. You will do better next time. Right now you are in the lull of the offseason, struggling to figure out where all your form went. Well, it went into the bank for next season. Once you start your adaptation and get some rest you will wake up a bit and start to see the light. You will end up with a stronger base and a more resilient level of fitness. Have faith in the process, Sara. This isn't about beating yourself up on the spin bike anymore. You're a racer now and you are starting to train like one.

Shovel, thank you! That clicked, and a light just came on.

Sarals, I am just a lurker and hanger on here, I draw inspiration to keep pushing from everyone in the Masters Racing Forum and your thread is one thing that has helped me out. All your efforts and the way you keep your head up and drive forward speak volumes about your passion for cycling and racing. The way all the big brothers here have encouraged you (and by extension, me too) has shown me that the "family" is alive and well here. You now have a year of experience and the hard earned base of fitness and knowledge to build from. Not the start at zero like last year, a much more promising new year of racing and training are yours to enjoy, and I will also take a lot away from this. They aren't all TT's, some are just flat out good road races with good competitors, and even those soul trying TT give you some valuable gouge in the old mind bank.

Thanks to you and everyone here in this fine forum.

Bill

So far this has been quite a season for me. In some ways it has been harder, and in some ways a little bit easier. The hard/easy equation has shifted - it's now harder mentally to do this, whereas - surprise - I'm finding it a little easier physically.

I've had some dark moments around racing this year. I sometimes feel like I've lost that enthusiasm, fire, that burned so fiercely last year. And, for the first time, I've been getting frustrated with my results.

Is this part of racing? I think so.

In spite of my mental woes, I see so much improvement physically. Oh, I still can't get up hills worth a crap, but that is improving and I do know where the problems with that lie. I can fix it. Where I am feeling the gains, seeing the improvement, is in my conservation and efficiency. I'm getting better at anticipation, too, and this has helped me enormously in crits. Ex pointed out just yesterday that I have come such a long way from the "hanging on for dear life" struggles I was doing in crits last year to being there at the end this year. I told him that being at the line with the pack at the finish was oh so close, perhaps even the next race - and I mean it!

Where those young women have a very clear advantage is in stamina, staying power. Their matchboxes are much larger than mine. I can match their strength and now their speed, I just have to be smarter and more patient in order to neutralize their advantage. That's difficult to do in a road race. I haven't been able to answer that one, yet. All that said, I'm not the chattel I was last year in a W4 crit. I'm in there mixing it up, yelling at people who chop my wheel, and looking for ways to keep position or move up. What a change!

I've learned through some sage advice to look for the courses that suit me. I'm the kind of person who thinks that no matter what, if you didn't work for it, you didn't earn it. For most things that's true. Racing, however? Not necessarily. You all know that. I just figured it out! So, it's flatter courses for me. Let the climbers have their way at Sea Otter and Pescadaro without me! Age appropriate would be nice, too, but there are so few of those races in a season. I don't want to sit around waiting for them. The other thing is in a given women's senior field, there are so few quality riders that those races are not nearly the challenge or quite as much fun as racing with the 20 and 30 somethings. I said fun, didn't I? Yes, it really is!

Worrying about climbing well unless you're a really good climber to begin with is like buying a 364 color crayon box when you're colorblind. You work on things to compliment your best trait, then minimize your weaknesses so they can't be used easily against you, then focus on races that suit you best and do the other ones for training or fun.

You've made great strides in a very short time; the folks that have been at this for too long to count will tell you that it's years before you sort of figure things out, and before they can often point to a big margin of improvement. Increments build on increments.
