That's got to come first, I guess. I think I'm going to have to do some running to help build that back up. Apparently the surgery and the huge fluid buildup after it really stressed my heart and lungs. My lungs are back, but my heart isn't. Then, there is the muscle loss. Along with that are the fat stores - the "long term" energy banks. They're gone. When I cook off the glycogen in a short effort, there is nothing left to sustain, and recovery can take three or minutes. OMG...

I've a long way to go. However, when I think back to how pitiful I was 6 or 7 years ago, I'm a total monster!
Very very unlikely that you have lost so much fat you can't fuel your exercise, Sara, you'd have to be skeletal. And I don't think one can "cook off the glycogen" as fast as all that, it takes a while.

More probably you just need to back off the effort a bit and give yourself time to rebuild your fitness. It won't take long. And while running is fine (I'm doing some of it myself) there's no reason why some long steady distance and tempo work on the bike shouldn't do the job just as well. Take it steady, do some resistance work (I suggest half-squats or leg presses, but no lifting post-surgery until the docs OK it) and you'll be back to your best in no time. Make it a medium-term plan to be in top shape for the start of next season.

That's great advice, Chas - thanks! I wasn't "seeing through" all of the different things my body was doing yesterday. It's funny, this morning, I did exactly what you suggested, on the trainer. I did 24 minutes, 2 minutes per cassette cog (big ring). I started in a low gear, then advanced to the next for two minutes, then two minutes in the next - etc, etc. I aimed for an 80 RPM cadence, and just kept things steady. That felt really good. My HR went to 132, that's all (trainer, after all), and it took it 1 minute 28 seconds to drop below 100 once I started the cool down (for four minutes). Not horrible.

Still sitting at 129 pounds, by the way....

Thanks, man!

Well, I now have a like new Bianchi L'Una 53 cm frameset, fork, Campy Record seatpost, Campy Chorus 10 speed gruppo, FSA compact crankset, Campy 13t/28 cassette, and either Easton EA90 Aero or Mavic Open Pro (with PT hub) wheels - courtesy my B/F. He's a sweet guy! I'm hoping it's lighter and stiffer then my Look! If it is, the PT hub and wheels will go on it and it will be the race bike.

Congrats Sara. That bike sounds wonderful. You are lucky to have a great boy friend.

Way to go Sarals. I bought a Roubaix about a week ago. The Look is 57.4 and the Roubaix is a 61. I should have never got fit. Enjoy the new ride, I am.

Thanks, everyone! Wow...I know, I know.

Now.

All I have to do is get back to where I was three weeks ago so I can ride it like it should be ridden!

Fellas!! Thank you all!

Hey, I'm open to suggestions on how to keep it light. It is just a frameset with a Campy gruppo...starting from scratch!

Today marks three weeks from the surgery. I was cleared to let it go, and I did. I did the Tuesday Group Ride, it's here.

I felt pretty darned good! My performance was off, but I was able to do FAR more than I thought I could. The group was surprised and impressed that I did the final climb, and I really had no trouble with it. I also did the field sprint at the end of the ride, and I was close to the front. I had decent kick, and good speed!

What needs rebuilding is cardio. Recovery is slow. My legs are very close to where they were before I got sick. I'm also lighter, and I'm going to try to keep myself at my current weight.

Here's the power numbers: 10s - 203, 30s - 186, 60s - 151. Avg: 136. Peak (in the sprint): 538.

I have to say - I am thrilled!

Tales From The Dark Side - Sara's Aspirations

Oh, is it ever!! I was unbelievably antsy...and depressed. I guess that means "I'm a cyclist"? :-)

I'm back home, and back here! I had sketchy cell coverage in Maine and no internet. I managed some Facebook posts and some email, but anything else was difficult. I did run twice, a total of about 6.3 miles, and I'm two pounds heavier (dammit). I got on the bike this morning for a 16 mile ride, and I felt pretty darn good! Now, to get with Ex and get going again.

Shovel was so right about Maine. God's Country. Pristine, beautiful. The weather was warm and nice until Sunday, then fall abruptly started. Deer Isle is a magical place, with lobster fishermen, artists, sculptors, artisans, hippies, many deer and other furry things, and endless beauty. I'm so totally relaxed right now! Don't worry, in a few days I'll be wound tighter than a spring again.

Now to read about all of the racing I've missed!!!

I KNOW how hard it is. I know, also, that I'm probably not strong enough, and probably never will be. I also know I'm doggedly stupid and stupidly determined.

I'll try making banana bread for the next race. Cookies work for my BFF RR, so - why not??

I decided I really needed to post a photo of me NOT in a kit or on the bike! This was taken on Deer Isle, Maine this past Saturday at my niece's wedding.

Delivered the L'una frame, wheels, gruppo and other parts to my LBS yesterday. I'm still awaiting handlebars and the Campy freewheel for the Easton R4 hub. However, I hope to have the bike mid week. I hope it's light!!! I'll post a photo when I get it.

I was accepted by MBRT (the Monterey Bay Racing Team) for the 2013 season today. THAT is exciting! I know most of the riders on that Team, and I've ridden with some of the women. For someone slow and old as me to be accepted by them is quite an honor! I hope I do well by them.

Thank you, Tony!

Here it is - and no, that's NOT me (she is my spin class instructor and a girl friend)! It's a dark blue with white accents - it says "Don Chapin" across the front of the jersey.
