I belated congratulations, Shovel, and a 'way to put it out there' to you, Jet. I would have piped in earlier, but I spent yesterday repairing a broken water pipe. Spoiled teenagers seem to think there ought to be water to the house, even if it requires repair work in the Phoenix summer sun. At least TallWife put a shade umbrella over the almost grave-sized hole we dug to find the broken T junction. AFter that, we enjoyed a well-earned date-night.

Short report, details later. I finished up 3rd in the field sprint for 2nd in the 60-64 race. The Beast went off the front alone with 7 K to go. My two riding buddies got 1st and 2nd in the 55-59 with shoveled in 3rd.

As AJet said, I backed up yesterday's gold with a bronze today in the 20k. The pace was much faster than yesterday and the wind was higher. Multiple attacks could not spring anyone, and I was not trying as I was marked. Two guys got away with 5 miles left but they were not strong enough and we caught them before the turnaround. I briefly thought about attacking out if the turn but the guys on the front hit it hard which nullified that prospect. Coming into the sprint I was 5th wheel or so. My friend David from CT passed me on the left. That was the wheel I needed. The two teammates had a gap at that point so I focused on David. We battled like champions and I got him at the line by a hand.

I am happy and very proud to be one of very few double medalists on this stage. Consider my season salvaged.

We started a minute behind the 50-54, and caught and passed them on lap 3 of 4. The pace was slow. My time was 1:04. Weak attacks went on the up grades but a team of 3 kept bringing them back. Fine by me. On the last lap, the three slowed on an up grade and were looking for someone to do some work, so I attacked on the windward side into the head/cross wind. I got into my tick, looking down but not back until 30-40 seconds. When I looked back, I had 200 meters. The last thing I heard was "uh-oh". I soloed for the next five miles until I caught another rider right before the lead up to the sprint. I beat him up the hill and around the final turn but he got me at the line. Didn't matter, he was 60+ and got the best overall time. I have pics that my son took that I will upload later. Currently basking in the hot tub and will attend the medalist celebration later.
Chapeau

Tomorrow I will be marked but I will be doubly aggressive.

Where are the directions to the party posted?

Congrats Shovel and AJet. The racing at the NSG in Cleveland exceeded my expectations; it was good competition and I met a lot of pleasant people. And, I caught up with an old (no pun intended, hee hee) teammate from my former team in the ATX who was racing in the 60-64s.

40K
It was wet the whole way. But, when the rain poured in lap 2, it made conditions challenging for me because I could hardly see in front of me! (Oh, and I had to cleverly manage my cork pads on carbon 404s as it's generally tricky when you have near zero stopping power -- I'd effectively ridden this combo in the rain a few times before and knew what to expect). The rider who won both the TTs and both RRs took off early. Someone bridged to him. A chase put down a good effort and we caught them during the up after the turnaround that marked the start of lap 2. I recall feeling some pain and concern about getting dropped as we were closing in on the apex. I dug in, spun it up and stayed in contact; phew! From that point, my key thought was "stick." As I stuck through each acceleration, my mind locked in and focused on getting through the next surge. After the climb that started lap 4, I was desperate to see better. So, I dropped my shades down to the bottom of my nose and peered over the the shade's bridge. Voila, I could see. I kept them down the rest of the way.

Fast forward to the end game. One comes off a fast descent from the highway onto an exit ramp that soon turns up, with a right turn onto some uppy stuff (4%? 5%? 6%?) for about 200m, and then another right turn for the final flat to the finish that was about 250-300m. As the 50-54s and 55-59s were mixed at this juncture, I wasn't perfectly sure where I was in the scheme of things. So, my approach was simple: ride hard and go around people when you can. I took the inside/curb line off the exit ramp and hit it. That was a good decision as there was a crash just to my left, away from the curb! The uppy part hurt and I went around some folks; my sprint was good for about the first 100m of it. Then, I ran out of juice (wattage was down to lower 300s and upper 200s) and lots of folks were passing me. I finished in 12th. All good for this crit racer.

20K
My preplan for this race was to stay near the front for as long as I could and to not follow the 40k winner if he rides away as such an effort would likely break me. Indeed, gold and silver winners did break away. I was in the top 5-7 of the chase for most of the race and until the turn for the final sprint. Then, soon after I turned for the sprint, I hit a wall. It felt like 10 or so people passed me. I finished in 17th place. I am satisfied.

Great job AJet and BG. I had the finish hill at 4%, which doesn't sound like much until you realize that it is a full tilt big ring sprint.

If I had a better result on Sat I would have gone up the hill ahead of everyone. I was about 6-7 going into the hill and looking for a strong wheel to follow into the wind on the sprint. The guy I marked blew up near the top and once clear of him I entered the 300 meter sprint 4th and chased to the line. I needed 20 more meters of race to get them all. I left a lot on the hill and sprinted into the wind too.

So was there a party? All of you certainly deserved to unwind after this weekend. Next stop, Minneapolis, MN in July 2015.

No party for me. My wife came to the race and we went home afterwards intending to attend a fund raiser for a MTB trail project that included food and beer in the evening. After lunch at home and 2 brews I decided to just chill and reset my mind for this week’s Master's Nationals Track Championships. I race the 2K Pursuit on Wed and 500 TT on Thursday

I looked for you after the awards ceromony but couldn't locate you. Oh well, hopefully there will be another time down the road. My buddies and I got together to have a few pictures of us together with our medals right after my awards which took a few minutes.

Of course he won on Sat!

My team mate and riding/training buddy got him on Sun. shovel owes me a beer. I do have morals and ethics and did not tell them about his tactic of attacking then holding on at race end. Jeff, who won, and I were both pot bellied group riders 6 years ago looking for the next step in cycling. Jeff is winning everything this year from State MTB, Crit Champs and most recently a big stage race. Easy rides with Jeff and Joe (team mate) always includes little pissing matches.

Here we are hamming it up for our adoring Facebook fans.

Jeff, his wife, my son and I talked for a while in the souvenir line. He is a genuinely nice guy. I knew his history and strengths and that it would be tough to beat him and Joe in a flat sprint. I had a shot at them coming up the hill but once they started pulling away it was over. Hats off to both of them. I'm thrilled to double medal.
