Sea Otter 2013

Who's in, and what are you racing?

I'm doing road events, the W4 circuit race (Friday April 19) and the W4 road race (Saturday April 20). Bailed on the crit and switched that entry to the circuit race.

I was going to do the Fondo, but I'm doing the Primavera 100k instead. Good luck out there.

Thanks, Esteban!

I have a girlfriend who's doing that. It sounds like fun!

Some photos from today. The conditions were just about perfect. Light wind, cool, dry - bright.

Winners of the M35+ crit. These guys were in charge from the whistle. One of my team mates was in this race and he said they set a pace that was just blistering - he DNP'ed, in fact.

Ex and company getting the pre race brief.

Just before their start.

Start of the M45+ 1/2/3 second lap.

My team mates discussing strategy (wisely leaving me out of it) prior to the M35+. Notice that the helmet on the bike is in strict conformity with The Rules.

I like your shots better than the ones on the Giant site.

Once again, the women's version of the bike is less awesome than the men's. Irritating!

My thought too, but in their website they show the high-zoot version: https://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-us/...specifications

^^ Red, not DI2, look at the wheels, look at the lack of seat mast. Still inferior. :/

M35+ - How do you just let four guys on the same team get up the road? M45+ - I am surprised at the field size for such an important race.

All the field sizes were smaller than I expected, too.

They were. But the promoters were touting "best turn out yet!" all weekend long. Well, they screwed up the circuit races on Friday, so go figure.

Shovel, I watched that race. From what I gathered they had four in the break from the gun, and one in the main field effectively blocking. One of our guys, who was in that race, said that they got up the road before anyone realized and the guy on the point was setting a really blistering pace. Our guy is a monster, but he didn't/couldn't bridge. It didn't look like anyone could, or tried to, either. My take!

OK, but as soon as you see any number of guys from the same team attacking, ya gotta go. One guy is not going to hold back the field if the field is motivated. Not that being the lone guy in a break of five is a picnic.

I get you!

The crits were on Thursday, and there weren't a lot of people around. A lot of the expo was still being set up, almost like the SO hadn't started and that the crits were just a teaser. I was really surprised when I rode into the paddock, looked out to the start line and there were just SO FEW people out there! I could go pretty much anywhere I wanted - not so on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday. SO needs to do something to either promote the crits better than they do or move them to another day, where they'd be better attended. Thursday afternoon? Not a great day selection in my way of thinking!
