Fat Tire Ride: Tahoe Rim Trail

Did the Tahoe Meadows to Marlette Lake out and back a week or so ago and didn't have a chance to post the pics. 3:10 ride, average altitude was around 9000-9500 feet. Pretty wasted after 2.5 and crawled the last few miles. Did set a PR on one leg though.

Overlooking Washoe Lake:

Lake Tahoe:

Marlette Lake sits above Lake Tahoe. Can't see it but there's still snow on the mountains.

Some huge granite boulders up on top of the mountain:

Power of ice...split this thing in two:

Pretty awesome. Hope to get up there some day. Even if I'll be gasping for air. Until what month are temps/weather still decent?

I've made it into November, though you definitely want to be off before the sun starts to go down. Even in July with temps in the 100's in the valley in can get cold.

Spring you just need the snow to be clear so it depends on how heavy the winter was.

Vance, the doors always open to our place up there.

I haven't been to Tahoe in a long time. Maybe a road bike road trip is in order. I presume there are some shops up there that also rent mountain bikes.

When I had my old house in Reno I'd host the annual "Chunder" MTB weekend. It was a chance for a bunch of my riding buddies to come up and hit some great single track, and a chance for me to abuse sea level folks.

It might be time to revive that tradition.

There's at least a hundred plus miles of single track up there, half of which is local knowledge and doesn't get into the magazines or on many websites.

The road riding is quite good too...just doing the loop around Lake Tahoe is pretty fun and there's plenty of climbing to be had.

The other thing we did one year in the Fall was to ride Lee Vining to Evergreen to Twain Harte to the junction of 395 and 108. Three days, mail everything ahead to the hotels, then slap a return label on the dirty clothes and ship em back.

Might be a cool thing to revisit as well...

Ditto. And while I'm inviting myself to other people's parties, I could fly to Phoenix and drive out with AzTR.

^^^ Ditto that ditto! I haven't been to that part of the world in 25 years or more, and I've never done it on a bike at all.

Although parts of the TRT really require a MTB, you can do a surprising amount of the trails around Tahoe on a CX bike.

Multiple gears optional.

No. I broke my leg at Lake Hope 5 weeks ago.
I had surgery, a plate and 6 screws. The cast comes off Monday then rehab fun begins.
Are you racing cross this year? I haven't kept up with it.

Crap Jack! Hope the healing goes quickly. Plates and screws!, you are hanging out at the right place, there's been a lot of plates and screws here this year. I have not done any cross races so far this year. I spent most of the season focused on track and the National Senior Games. They started a 55+ race in the cross series and the average field is 15-20 which includes Rudy Sorka, so the races have been for 2nd.

AJ, I think I mentioned this before -- I remember Rudy Sroka from the 1970s. I always thought he was a few years older than I, but looking at the USAC web site, his racing age is the same as mine. As I recall, he was on the national team at one point. In those days, being on the national team was the equivalent of being a pro today. I won't quibble about Pro Tour versus domestic pro.

Cleve, Rudy wins most everything, most recently he only got 2nd at Iceman(he is human after all). He lives close to me but we don't ride in the same groups. He is a really nice guy although quiet. Currently his son is one of Ohio's best cross racers even though Robert is 19 yrs old. Early last year Rudy, myself and two others planned to make a 3K pursuit team for a go at track nationals. Rudy crashed and broke his hand and had lingering dizziness and another of the guys, Dick Brink, had a non-functioning kidney removed.
