I raced my first season this year on a stock (but added clipless) 2002 Rocky Mountain Trailhead. I was a middle of the pack Sport racer, this year I want to be in the top 3. With that in mind here is my hopefull spec for next season:

2002 RM Trailhead
- RF Next crankset with UN-72 bb (replaced Alivio set)
- 85mm Marz MX Comp ETA, I was thinking SID but the guys at my LBS told me to stay away as the weight advantage is underscored by poor reliablility and lots of flex. Would consider a Fox F80X but is way beyond my budget. (replaces Judy)
- Selle Italia Flite saddle - rails on my stock seat are bent, and the thing sucks
- RF Deus stem - I want to get the front of my bike down a bit, the 5 degree version should do that
- Tires, likely Nokian Boazabeena (sp) X's 1.9.

I'd like to go to a set of 317/XT/DT Comp wheels with some hydro disks but I don't think the budget will stretch that far for next season.

Side note - I also want to start training very agressivley come march to snag some sport class wins in the start of the year before people start getting up to speed.

Man, all you guys have some fancy bikes and stuff. Well here's my specs for Junior Sport category racing (13-15 years old, I'm 13)

Trek 4300 Hardtail Frame
Hopefully a new fork besides this InSync Grind 323
Shimano XT drivetrain, besides the RaceFace Prodigy XC Cranks
Hopefully Avid Single Digit 7 rim brakes, currently ProMax Wal-Mart quality
Matrix 750 Rims laced to Shimno Deore quaility hubs (stock)
The rest is either stock or crap, or stuff I don't know much about, like the headset and handlebars.

All of you guys with your expensive bikes and money

I've upgraded a ton of stuff on my hardtail over the winter, stuff in parentheses is what used to be on it:

-Schwinn Homegrown HT Frame, 19" (KHS Alite 1000 21")
-Vuelta XRP Airline 1's, don't laugh at my heavy twin spoked roadie wannabe wheels
-Panaracer FireXC 1.8 with Stans (Crap Specialized Tires)
-Easton EA 50 monkeys (some weird flat XC bars)
-110mm Raceface Prodigy Stem (PFR Chromo...140mm!!!)
-FSA DL Headset
-Oury grips (Scott grips)
-Ringle post (Nashbar)
-LX F. Der.
-XT Rear (old XT)
-XT cassette (Old 8 speed)
-XT shifters/levers (ODI Gripshifters-crap)
-Tektro V-Brakes
-2002 Manitou Six Deluxe, don't laugh, it's not like the POS Six'es now
-Specialized Strongarm II Cranks
-Time ATAC pedals

Most of my stuff is on order right now, but I hope to have it ready by spring so I can start my first season ever of racing.

02 Trek 4300 frame 18"
Matrix disc Wheels all stock, except I rebuilt the rear wheel with DT Stainless spokes
Hayes mechanical disc brakes
Stock seat and post, cause it is pretty light and I like it
Sram Quartz D.I.R.T. rear derailer, one of the items I have on order
Crappy stock Alivo shifters and brake levers, what can I say, they do the job.
Kore Easton taperwall flat bar
Titec Big Al Stem 120mm
old square taper XTR Bottom Bracket
FSA Alpha Drive square taper cranks, with steel rings
03 Rock Shox Duke XC U-turn, I decided to order this fork, so it should be coming soon
Cheap Shimano cassette - all steel
Right now it's set up for touring so I have a pair of Tioga City Slickers on it.
Usually has Bontrager AC Jones knobbies on it
Front derailer is some Walmart quality piece of junk, I may upgrade but for now it hasn't given me problems so I will leave it.
I'll post a pic as soon as I get it all set up and assembled again.

Really, I thought they weren't too bad, not nearly as grippy as the Kenda Kinetics that I have on my dirt jumper but they are also .5" wider. At least they are fairly light at 440grams.

I agree. Never had any problems with my stock tires on my 4300.

for XC racing -- plus a few "MTB marathons" which are like really long (4-6 hour) XC races - plus the highlight is the TransAlp - the 8-day MTB stage race across the Alps with 20,000 meters of vertical (66,000ft) in July!

2002 Specialized FSR XC Comp (80/90mm rear)
* Fox x100 Terralogic Fork (air)
* Fox Float Pro-Pedal shock (air)
* 04 XT crank ("external" BB)
* deraileur: front LX, rear XTR
* XT cassette (11-34)
* SRAM chain
* Avid V-brakes (probably Ti's, maybe 7 levers)
* Crank Brother's Eggbeater pedals
* Bontrager front hub
* "cheap" rear hub (forgot the name)
* basic mavic rims (forgot the number)
* cheap bar/seatpost/stem
* Specialized Body Geometry Pro saddle
* Schwalbe 1.9" race tires (forgot the name, but used them for 1 race last year - extra lightweight)

---> something around 26lbs i think (hopefully under)... but with 100m front and 80mm rear.

-- when not racing it will have:
* salsa 44t bolt-on bash guard
* schwalbe fat albert 2.3" tires

Got the bike all put together for next season with a few differences:

- Got the Next, but kept my stock BB
- Got a 2003 Marz MX Pro ETA 105mm, close out for about 50% off
- Got a cheap Serfas saddle, nice and light but no padding. Seems ok so far, but if my but can't take it on the long races I'll end up with a Flite Gel me thinks
- Upgraded my brakes to Deore V's, just for looks

The Fork makes a huge difference (from Judy TT), I'm not used to soooo much squishyness. I think it will be very confidence inspiring on small jumps and drops though, so it should help on race day.
