What Are the Biggest Races in the Midwest?

I'm starting to work on my race schedule for 2014. I live in Columbus, Ohio and I'm looking for some of the biggest cross country mountain bike races in the surrounding areas - Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Western Pennsylvania, West Virgina & Kentucky.

Looking for events that have a cross country race and are well-attended. As an extra bonus, having a festival-like atmosphere would be fun too. Hoping to add 4 or 5 events to the calendar on top of my local series. Any suggestions?

I guess I should add that I am somewhere between a sport level and expert rider - definitely not a pro by any means. Just looking for events that are worth driving to.

Iceman Cometh in Traverse City MI the first Sat in November. Be ready when the registration opens early March, because all 4,500 spots in the 31 mile race filled in 32 minutes last year. The shorter race called the Snowcone did not fill up.

You can ride the Barry Roubaix Killer Gravel race near Grand Rapids on a MTB. That race is in the spring and regristration is now open.

WORS in WI is the best state series in the country. Best attended races, bar none. Hundreds of racers at every event, and lots of talent at all levels.

That's probably a little further than I was thinking of driving. Do they have a race in Madison? I liked that town when I was there a few years back.

A bunch of my teammates do that ride. I may have to try it this year.

I have thinking about doing 24 Hours of Dino. A bunch of guys from my team have done it in the past.

I asked Mike Cushionbury, the editor of Dirt Rag, this same question and he mentioned Shenandoah 100, Trans-Sylvania Epic, Dirty Kanza 200 & BC Bike Race.

Check out the full interview:

I went to college in Michigan and the Fort Custer stampede was a popular race for mountain bikers in the state.
