No roadie is going to sit around and jack a shock pump for as long as it would take to inflate a 700x23 even if they were to just top it of. Heck I can't see them carrying two inflation devices for that matter.

To the CO2 users: What do you do with your empties?

Well, I don't use CO2 offroad anymore. I did have a CO2 inflator mounted to my bike back when I was racing but that was 15 years ago. I only had one bike and carried CO2 on training and recreational trail rides too. I always followed the rules of pack-in/pack-out and leave no trace. I really don't see how hard it is to pack up the empties. It's not like there isn't room. There was enough room to have brought them there so there should be enough room to haul them out. When I got home, I just threw them into the recycling bin with my other cans.

That's the response I'm looking for.

Good post. I bought a CO2 Ultraflate but ended up returning it and buying a minipump (Crank Brothers). This little pump fits inside my seat bag and weights almost nothing. It takes time to inflate a tire with it but I don't flat that often so if it happens I just take it easy. The pump is lighter and about the same size of the Ultraflate with a cartridge inside.

Toss them in my yard. They'll at least get recycled by me

I'm always nice when things are handled in an intelligent manner.
