    Upgrading problem

    Hey guys

Just a question, for those of you with parents that monitor your spending. Do they not let you upgrade or get any new parts for your bike?

Cause my dad wont even let me get a 30 dollar front derailler, and i have an Acera right now.

    He thinks its a waste!!

I wanna get new parts but they are like a brick freakin wall.

My parents can't really stop me anymore, but they still just give me the guilt trips. They just don't understand the difference between a walmart bike and something nicer. I even made them ride and compare...no dice. Try comparing it to some part on a car if he's more adept to those. You know, something like..."This derailler is like a new clutch, it will make a world of difference, etc. etc."

Thankfully, my dad used to mountain bike and realized that quality parts are worth it, so he doesn't mind me spending my money on bike stuff. Every once and a while he'll give in and help me buy some of the more expensive upgrades though. He's also been very helpful in getting my mom to understand as well.

Well, they don't really stop me from getting new parts... except by giving me hardly any pocket money even though I do so much extra stuff. . But then that money is mine to spend for what I think is good.

If your front der isnt broken, dont replace it. $30 can be better spent on other parts.

Its better off saving the money to get a new fork. How about you ride it till everything is either broken or needs replacing. Explain to him that they are low end parts that wear out quickly.

I see a lot of pointless upgrading here in the mountain bike forum. It seems like you buy the bike, and the first thing you do is start replacing parts. why not buy the bike with the parts you want in the first place? why not at least get some use out of the parts you have?

Maybe they don't have the initial coin for the full purchase. I bought all my bikes cheap (with frame being the one I want) and then upgraded as I broke (I rare upgrade just for fun though) My roast was built that way

but I agree, ride the parts till they break at least. Most people just starting out don't even know how hard they will ride, you would be surprised at how long "low end" parts last. I still have an acera deraileur my gf uses on her bike. Works really well.
