I tried baggy mtb shorts and hated them, the noise as I moved and pedaled, the lack of air flow, the fact that they were an extra layer on me I saw no reason for, so,,
I ride in Lycra only, good lycra because they breathe, fit and just plain work for me.

I had knee warmers on under rain pants once. You would have thought I was wearing corduroy by the noise.

My average speed the trails I ride most is 6.5mph. I really don't think aerodynamics come in to play. Sometimes I ride baggies and sometimes I use my tight road stuff, just depends mainly on the temps.

As for the temps and tight road stuff I assume you mean to you find baggies are better for cooler weather ?
From what I know my Craft lycra Is far cooler in hot weather, I always figured roadies used the coolest thing they could find in hot weather.

Main advantage of baggies is that they're more durable. I wear lycra bibs, but throw a pair of hiking shorts over to keep a good pair of bibs from getting shredded.

I guess if you ride rocks, boulders,
I ride in the woods, I bounce off tree's, slide down dirt embankments, stickers, vines etc, never a single rip in my Lycra but I can see where out west It would tear..

I ride in lycra on the road...but ride baggies on the dirt. Personal preference.

Aero don't really mean much to me on a MTB...and I don't really notice my shorts "flapping" in the wind.

Same. MTB speeds range from 5-20 mph while pedaling, and beyond 20 downhill. Sitting upright on a MTB is a way bigger aero factor than your shorts. That's why XC racers don't sit upright.

When I take a break from my road bike and hop on my mountain bike, I look forward to wearing "regular shorts" and also like my MTB platform pedals instead of clipping in for a change.
