Frustration with the 15mm thru-axle "standard"

Hey guys, already posted this in mechanics but it would probably be received better here. I'm just trying to do some research and am flying in circles so hopefully you guys can help me out

Regarding 15mm thru axles, the majority of those I've seen thread into one side of the fork and then clamp using a lever on the other side. For this type, are the threads the same across different brands of forks/axles? What size is the thread? (ie. 15x1.00, etc.)

I have also seen a style with a strange setup on the non-lever side of the skewer where the user pinches a mechanism that resembles a collet and the axle is then slid out. Are these very popular? Most of the axles I've seen have the threads.

And lastly, this question sounds ridiculous as I write it but... you never know with the bike industry! Are all 15mm thru axles actually 15mm in diameter??

Thanks in advance!

Your thinking too much into this, the 15mm hub is a standard & all have the same dimensions (15x100), the interface between the fork and axle is separate, and not many manufacturers make both.

The axle has different fitting, manufacturer dependant, Manitou uses a bayonet type connector, For RockShox (Maxle) and most others use a threaded QR type fitting. Forget the thread/connector spec, this (the axle) is part of the fork, not the hub, you get the axle when you buy the fork not the hub.

You can use any hub that is 15mm spec to fit onto any 15mm spec fork.

Boost 110 is a new standard, which increases the hub width by 10mm, this is a new spec, and if for 15x110mm hubs, but don't expect to see this till 2016 bikes are in the shops.

I'll confirm this. The axle is specific to the fork. You might possibly "get away" with swapping axles, but that's not the design intent. The intent of the standard is that you buy a fork with an axle and use them together as a unit.

Yes. FWIW though, I measured the inside of a hub axle the other day, and there is indeed 15mm of inside diameter. I'm sure the axles measure out to be 15mm as well, because they would need to fit without any slop.

What works is that all 15 mm hubs will fit. What is the issue you are facing? The axle will come with the fork.

Of all the 15mm fork/hub axle designs, I like what FOX did, I feel it is easiest to install. But all other manufacture specific axle designs (marz, manitou, rs) works too.

Are you trying to swap out axles?
