longer fork... shorter stem?

Hi all, I'm planning to swap out my 140mm fork for a 160mm shortly, and want to change out my stem. I've currently got a 60mm with 6degrees of rise. I'm going to swap in a flat stem with no rise, but can't decide between a 50mm or a 65mm. I'm thinking with the slight rise in the front end, the 65mm will result in a pretty accurate recreation of my current seat-grips geo, but then everyone seems to be going shorter and shorter with stems. The bike is a Kona PreceptDL. already pretty short in geo, but I find it super comfortable.

Anybody got any solid recommendations here?

Would be more concerned that the front end can take a 160mm fork, what does Kona/the LBS you got it from say about the increase in travel/can the frame handle it?

Hi Jim, another BF member put me on to a geo calculator that shows all adjustments etc, and the changes are minimal with a very slight rise in bottom bracket and less than a degree in angle change, i'm looking at the new fox forks and the axle to crown heights are reduced in the 2016 models, so all up the geo doesn't shift significantly. might actually end up with a 150mm which is even more subtle a change. Have asked Kona about the warranty risk though, thanks for that tip!

Only talking 3/4in difference in forks so no big deal. I doubt that you'd even feel a sizing difference while riding. Stem length on a mtb can change the handling quite a bit and I would base it more on what terrain you ride as opposed to trying to fit better because on a mtb you're all over the seat all the time so you don't have to be dialed in as precisely as a road bike.

it's counter-intuitive, but your reach will actually shorten when you install a longer fork. a few calculators show this.

so I'd start with the stem you have now, and you might need to increase it.
