Help me choose between 2 bikes

Hey everyone,
I am getting into mountain biking in Colorado and have my choice of bikes narrowed down to 2 bikes. One of the bikes I can get a big discount on and the other a decent deal. I won't post prices just yet, because I would like to hear some thoughts without being influenced by the prices. I am not good with knowing what components are good and all that. I want something a bit better than baseline entry and something all around solid that will last me a while. Here are my choices:

Diamondback Sport Lux 27.5
Lux Sport (Women's)
or
Specialized Jynx Comp 650B
Specialized Bicycle Components

HELP!?! What would you choose???? THANKS!!!!!

Both are more or less the same for the most part. The DB has 32mm fork sanctions and 100mm of travel vs the spec having 30mm sanctions and 80mm of travel and the DB has shimano brakes so I'd go DB on paper.

Thanks! I am leaning towards the DB because that is the way cheaper one. But I have heard people say they make crappy bikes so I got worried.

well most you ask will go " oh i bough a DB at wall mart and it was crap" thats the basis for that statement.
yes they make a crappy wallmart level, but they also make quite nice higher end bikes. for the most part the company your buying the bike from only makes the frame, and sometimes not even that much, some companys just put their name on a frame. the rest of the bike, gears/seat/brakes ect are all made by parts companys like shimano and can be found on almost every bike their is.
so as canker said they are almost identical as all of the parts on them are the same except for the frame, and the travel of the suspension. so basically go by how well the bike fits you, never buy one thats the wrong size even if its cheap and by what you will be useing it for, if the trails you are hitting require a longer suspension go for that one if not shorter ones typically are faster on smooth fast hardpack trails. but in Colorado i would say things would get rocky pretty fast and that extra travel may be nice.
another thing that would push me twards the db is the fact it has 180mm rotors f and 160 on the rear. the specilized appears to have a pair of 160s, the 180 on the front is real nice for the extra stopping power as most of your breaking is done in the front the rear is fine at 160 mm and some lighter riders even run 140mm. the back should be less because the lighter the rider the less weight is on the rear and the easyer it is to lockup, i belive the 160mm are good up to about 200 lbs and even then people only complain about not enough power if they are really pushing the bike. and staying on the brakes subject the db has shimano brake calipers and levers which for the most part are infalible even at entry levels. the other has tektro which while i cant say for certain, they are sure to be a bit more maintnance as they are a racyer brake. shimano are known to be set and forget and just work regardless. if you are going to be braking down some of the long hills you may encounter in colorado you may need to upgrade to better pads and heat shedding rotors but other then that those brakes are all you will ever need and im sure that kind of riding will be down the road when you are both stronger and in need of replacements anyways.

i guess in summery i hope that DB is the right size for you because its overall the best option because of the brakes, rotors and to a lesser degree the travel.
hope i could help.
have fun and be safe out there! best brush up on the unwritten rules of the trail where your a new rider.

But Sports Authority sells some entry-level Diamondbacks. Diamondback is, for the most part, a 'price point' second tier brand carried in shops to provide a budget alternative to their flagship brands. Usually, they offer a decent bang-for-the-buck and pack a bit more value per given price-point than the major brands.

I think that Kinesis' strategy for Diamondback has shifted over the years. It seems to me like they were selling in Wal-Mart at one point, and now have moved away from that to be more of a tier 2 LBS and online brand, like dminor said. They have some very well-equipped bikes in the mid-end (which is still way more expensive than your average non-enthusiast would ever spend) and they consistently are cheaper than tier 1 competitors.

They have some FS frames that are traditional single pivot, and then also their knucklebox, which I guess is a four-bar. And of course, they have a big marketing push with Chris Akrigg.

They never sold bikes at Walmart. They sold at Dick's, Sports Authority, Performance, etc but they never dropped down to regular walmart type of department stores. They have really been stepping up their game lately and making some really nice mtn and even road bikes.
