shin guards with or without knee protection ?

just wondering how often you actually hurt your knee riding ?i have never done it ,so iam wondering if i need shin guards with or without kneecap. as anyone ever really regret that he only had shin guards on ?
i really would much rather have a simple shin guard that i can wear under some normal pants.

You might want to get some with kneecaps. Hit my right knee on the fork crown while climbing a hill two weeks ago, and it still hurts. And you never know when you go down an hit you knee on something.
I am seriously condering getting some shin guards myself.

I got a pair of shin guards without the knee (SMACK) got them after I had a bunch of stiches to put the nice slice I got from my peddel. I like em, light, no restriction in movement, cooler then having my knees covered. I figure if I hurt my knees then I will get knee pads, but so far I have been very happy with them. They are fabric no plastic, they already have a nice rip in them, which means they have paid for themselves.

the knee protection is more for when you fall, and the shin part is for when you slip a pedal, or something smilar.... ive hurt my knees pretty bad a few times,

If I didn't have knee guards while biking...my knees would be destroyed. If you need to bail then they can save your knees, or if your pedal slips.

ya knees where a must for me. they already have a big gash in the knee which means they where already worth it. theyve saved me from many hits on the crowns too.

I would suggest a pair of pads that are a shin/knee combo.

I have lizard skins shin gaurds and find that 90% of the time, I wear the knee pads that I have from roller-blading/skateboarding. Saved my knees a bunch of times after I fell.

I'm thinking of getting my friend's Fox shinguards... my shin is full of evenly spaced scratches and cuts from the pedal. That's not too bad though, what really makes me think I should get shinguards is when my foot slipped off the pedal and the pedal sliced through my leg, right behind the knee. It was very deep and hurt like hell to bend my leg for a week or so. My friend's Fox shinguards have a bit of protection behind the leg.

Its just added protection, why the hell not? If you land badly on your knee you can cause some SERIOUS damage...

Look at dianese armor, very nice!

Just want to note that my friend has Dainese shin+knee guard and it keeps slipping down his leg because the straps suck. I think his is an older version, he said something about how he should've waited a month or two more and then he could've gotten the same leg protection but with better straps for the same price (new 2005 model?)

Just wanted to note that, I don't mean to give Dainese a bad name, I really like their gloves and gear but I thought it might be a good idea to mention it.

I am still looking forthe right knee shin combo, but I found a cheap alternative to tide me over till I find what I like. They are Nike soccer shin gaurds, the ones I have a strait chrome, and black, they have saved my shins a few times, hold up well, and stay where they are suppose too.

yeah but those are rather hard to get off and on.also soccer shin guards are usually not as stable and can scoot up pretty easily especially if you don't wear the foot strap.
i just checked tsg pads from germany :
https://www.titus.de/SID=si864b1f7294...eNodeID=111339
i know they are good in quality since i had some for skating way back ,but those knee/shin combos look like pantyhoses to me,but the regular shin pads look pretty sweet.still right now i thing the roaches are the best ive seen.
btw. i hope titus gets into the mtb scene and start building theire own bikes .they always made great bmx so good potential there.

Let me correct my self...

Now I am getting some shin guards..

Got back from a ride 1hour ago, and guess what I have on my left shin... Yess.. you guessed it right. a 2inch long gash from my pedal carressing my shin gently (NOT) after my foot fell off it.. It is pretty deep too... Have pictures if anyone want to see...

Now exuse me, I'm going off to see if I can find the missing piece of skin on the inside of my bike pants...
