clamp on v brake posts
Has anyone used something like these before? I have an alum mtn frame thats too small, so im replacing it. I would rather have carbon over alum and i am considering some of these to use my xtr v's (properly torqued of course). Is this a bad idea, or the worst idea?

Probably not the best idea but it might work ok.
If you were to do it, you might want to also use a v-brake booster to give a bit more support.
You'd also want to make sure that the inner diameter of the clamp was a good match to the outer diameter of the seat stays.
Pace (a fork manufacturer) made clamp on v-brake mounts for some of their carbon forks.

Anyone have a lead on a hard tail, cf mtn frame with v brake posts? 18-19 inch, preferably new?

I am using those Evolution brake mounts on my 4 year old sons Hotrock 16. They work okay, but take a lot of time to get set up properly.

I guess I don't understand why one wouldn't just use disc brakes. Re-using inappropriate parts?
If you like your rims and tires, you can rebuild them with disc hubs.

Thank you for your reply, I have xtr combo shifters/levers, if I make the switch to disk, not only do I need to replace my hubs and brakes but also my controls. Thats a pretty steep cost to upgrade. As far as inappropriate? Ill leave that one for another thread.

Alternatively, you could probably find a used Al frame of the same vintage as your existing one for dirt cheap. It'd get you the right size frame. For the most part, CF wasn't widely used in MTB frames, until long after everyone switched to disc brakes.

I dig it when people screw around with bikes, making all kinds of things work.
But I think they need to take it easy out there on these, "put together with odd parts bikes", as In stay off the Black Diamond single tracks...

thanks everyone,
I know they're out there (carbon frames for v brakes) but if I have to use alum Im ok with that, as GSA said they are easy to find and cheap.
that last one you posted cliff is promising, wish it was a touch larger. Im 5.10, 17 in frame would probably work. My current trek is 16 with an extended post, it had always been ok until I started riding a roadie, now I feel cramped up.

Various Titanium frames also show up for a good price from time to time.
Fuji Titanium Mountain Bike 19 inch Frame Vintage Cantilever Mount 1 1 8" | eBay
Titaium Mongoose Frame | eBay
Litespeed Unicoi Mountain Bike Frame 18in Large 3AL 2 5V Titanium Softail 26" | eBay
Also keep your eyes peeled for Craigslist deals. They show up from time to time, especially if you hunt for broken bikes.
I've just posted current auctions... a look through the history and you'll find quite a few previous CF and Titanium auctions.
